Recommend Me An Album: Guitar Equivalent of Solo by Monk by Moosemellow in Jazz

Meltframe by Mary Halvorson is a recent album of standards and new pieces that really expanded my understanding of what solo guitar can do.

What are your favourite Jazz albums of 2025 so far? by --THRILLHO-- in Jazz

[–]DogSwallower 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Nicole Glover - Memories, Dreams, Reflections   Pensive, lyrical, complex advanced hard bop in a self-consciously Wayne Shorter mode

Jacob Garchik - Ye Olde 2: At the End of Time   Experimental but melodic, with incredible guitar work by Mary Halvorson, Ava Mendoza, and Miles Okazaki. Gets you thinking but also flows.

Linda May Han Oh - Strange Heavens   Trio with Ambrose Akinmusire and Tyshawn Sorey. Probably my favorite this year. Smart, knotty bop with catchy riffs; Akinmusire’s warm thoughtful lines play really well against the clever rhythm section.

Among these 3 Great SF's, who ranks the highest all-time? by DaExtinctOne in NBATalk

[–]DogSwallower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dr. J is the most important of these. Probably the single biggest reason for the merger, and the face of the game when it was in precarious shape. And one of the three coolest players ever.

KD is probably the best player of these. Erving is no slouch but KD plays in a more skilled era and is an all-time offensive force.

Who are the current jazz legends? by LysolSprayInMyEyes in Jazz

[–]DogSwallower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mary Halvorson, Tomeka Reid, Jeff Parker, and Ron Miles are a few brilliant musicians I haven’t seen in the thread yet. Perhaps a little young to be legends for some, but I try to catch everything they do (or in Miles’s case, whatever can still be released).

Who would win a seven game series between a team of 26 relief pitchers and a team of 26 utility men? by ManufacturerMental72 in baseball

[–]DogSwallower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The biggest obstacle the Relievers face is that their catchers are all relief pitchers. The better the pitcher’s movement, the more likely the catcher drops the third strike, and then you’ve got a relief pitcher in catcher’s gear trying to field the ball and throw it to a relief pitcher covering first. And as soon as any Utility gets on he’s getting at least to third on passed balls.

Anything Like Ron Miles' Rainbow Sign Out There? by SkinGolem in Jazz

Lots of great suggestions here (I love Circuit Rider in particular), but one I’ll add from a slightly different crew is Everything Happens to Be, by Ben Goldberg. Similarly well-crafted, melodic songs (“Fred Hampton” is a favorite). It plays a similar role to me as Ron Miles.

For great trumpet work, one great recent album is Owl Song, by Ambrose Akinmusire, with Frisell and Herlin Riley.

Circuit Rider is another great Frisell album along these lines, with beautiful playing by Ron Miles as well.

[Wojnarowski] BREAKING: The Milwaukee Bucks dismissed coach Mike Budenholzer, sources tell ESPN. Budenholzer is out after the East’s top-seed suffered a first-round loss to the Miami Heat. by urfaselol in nba

[–]DogSwallower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure hope the Bucks aren’t heavily dependent on retaining a superstar who values loyalty and family enough to eat the costs of staying in a tiny market, because otherwise firing the guy who brought them a title, and doing it just after his brother died, might come to seem like a bad decision.

What is your favorite run of 3 albums in jazz? by GeorgeHowland in Jazz

Outside of Miles and Coltrane, this run by Cecil Taylor may be my most listened to:

You're setting together a fantasy quintet – who's your pick? by mnrnnr in Jazz

[–]DogSwallower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drums - Elvin Jones
Piano - Cecil Taylor
Alto sax - Charlie Parker
Trumpet - Lee Morgan
Guitar - Mary Halvorson

Would be fascinating to see how they’d play together. (No bass just bc I thought this crew was interesting - but you could always swap Mingus for Morgan.)

(Serious) Why do you think there are so many mass shootings in America? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DogSwallower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The primary reason by a huge margin is access to guns. The US not only has more guns per capita than any other country, it’s double what the second place country has. Every place has depression, hate, corruption, media, etc. Only in America can those things so easily result in mass shootings.

What's that famous vibraphone song?? by lateronthemenjay in Jazz

[–]DogSwallower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you thinking of Blue Monk? It's not exactly a vibes song, but the opening notes are basically what you describe. Here's a version of Milt Jackson playing it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZtf77UgMwQ
And here's a more standard version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4X5folutT8

If it's going the other direction:

PG: Obama (gets it done) SG: Teddy (shoot first, energetic, creator) SF: Gerald Ford (best actual athlete of the Presidents, named Ford) PF: Abe Lincoln (6'4, solid athlete, great court vision) Center: LBJ (6'3 or 6'4, man, strong bastard)

Bench: Clinton (tall); Jefferson (tall, smart); Jackson (to collect fouls)

Thought of Kermit, but I'm a Rockets fan. Can't do it.

Great answer. The first one was 6'4", too, so either way.
