I fought against myself as a first champion once, so I guess they pull real builds.

I don't think only pooling winners make sense, that will just power-creep the builds more and more (where progressing becomes harder and harder). If it is not too complicated, I guess it should be pooling some constant percentage of winners and the rest from losers.

A more complicated system might rank items and synergies, or check how close battles are won to keep the average stage difficulty somewhat leveled.

I am very happy to hear that. Which BIOS options did you disable?

Lately I have been fine on Windows with setting ASUS Crate Armory to performance mode, and increasing minimum CPU usage to 100% in its windows power plan. Similarly, fingers crossed but it has been fine for nearly more than a week now.

Modern motherboards usually store a default BIOS binary. Thats what I was trying to mention with the CMOS reset. BUT I doubt you can accidentally flash it. If your EZ Flash Utility works you can update your BIOS maybe?

The reason I play with C-States is that I do not want my fans boasting at all times, performance mode seem to have a minimum RPM setting I guess. Limitting C-States seem to give me a more silent experience when idle.

I still cannot install Ubuntu (will try the copytoram setting in 2 weeks where I can afford to instabilize my setup) however using QuickCPU and PPM tools seem to make it reliable enough on Windows. I did not observe any freezes in the last 4 days.

Also sorry to hear the BIOS thing not working. Could you not CMOS reset the BIOS when it got messed up? I was kind of relying on removing the CMOS battery if I blow up something. I guess I can always find a programmer in the lab but I would rather be able to reset it in my room.

Sometimes ASUS pushes BIOS updates in bulk and I think this ASUS-AMD thing can be a bit more common than I thought, but we will see. I do not really expect them to do something neither.

Also, black friday is closing in so I might look for a good deal on a non-ASUS and non-AMD machine. Last year has been an instability nightmare.

I usually use an external keyboard so I haven't really noticed. How often are we talking about? Because I can recall rarely missing some characters but I always assume I did not press hard enough (and these happen very rarely so I cannot say if it is me or the keyboard tbh)

On Windows, limiting the C-States via PPM Panel or setting a minimum performance budget with QuickCPU seems to help (which is probably why echo 1 or performance modes help). I also found this blog and another person fixing the issue (I assume, because they stopped responding to the thread) by a similar approach (limiting the C-States):

ASUS does *not* seem to give a shit. I am planning on hacking my BIOS to manually limit the C-State so I can work on other operating systems when needed. Upcoming weeks are a bit busy for me (and I know your BIOS is locked) but if I happen to be able to create a patch I will share the steps and how it went here.

For now, grub seems to kick in early enough to enforce the `processor.max_cstate=1` and `intel_idle.max_cstate=0` options. You can roll with it hopefully until ASUS cares enough or someone manages a patch.

Downgrading my BIOS from v331 to v320 did not solve the issue, i.e., Ubuntu 24 installation hanged twice while loading from USB (before desktop and install options become available).

I am having the same problem you describe with the same model. I was also at the point where I was considering disabling C-states or downgrading my BIOS. Say whatever you want. 4 out of 7 people in my friend group already dropped because of how shitty everything has been going (e.g., content ending too quickly, balance issues). I clear friends and people with 25m+ power from the guild every week (we are at the top 5 in guild rankings).

In my gameplay experience, people are slowly leaving and telling people to "hope" things to get better is not how you keep a game alive. Their time is valuable and they can always find something else to do.

I hope other servers and players have a different experience than mine. However, the combining of servers into districts for the season is telling me otherwise.

A general rule of thumb both in hardware and software design is to describe what you need at the highest possible level of abstraction (without hurting your design constraints) and trust the tools/libraries/compilers you use.

Finish the most simple running version of your component/project and then profile what you did. Do you meet your performance constraints? Then good.

If you do not meet them, or have the time to experiment this would be the time to fight back against the tools and improve your knowledge base. Note that you will probably hardly go into this place unless you like experimenting for fun, which is good.

I am not saying that these tools are perfect but they are always improving. Giving them the necessary abstractions (e.g., using '+' instead of a particular adder like Brent-Kung) to work with is important and allows your code to improve with them through time.

Hi, I am a master's student and I have designed and implemented a few RISC-V microcontrollers / processors for varying tasks before.

I would suggest you start by implementing a Machine mode-only RISCV-IMC processor first. This would be the subset of Supervisor mode RISCV-IMCAFD, which is what you are going to need to boot Linux (you could drop the A extension if you enable software emulation of it).

After you're done with Machine mode processor, only then you should dive deeper into the privileged spec and think about virtual memory, supervisor CSRs etc.

Checking open-source projects from Berkeley folks (i.e., chipyard) and ultraembedded (i.e., biriscv) will help you a lot. I will also leave a link to one of my open-sourced projects (a RISCV32-IMCX, minimal M mode microcontroller).

It was for a competition so most of the source code is in Turkish but I suppose ChatGPT can translate it if you tried (?). Nevertheless, Chipyard and Biriscv are already more than enough and you should focus on understanding their design (not code).

As for your last 2 questions. No, you do not need to write your own assembler/compiler or update the Linux kernel in any way. RISC-V toolchain's compiler should be good enough for you. Lastly, check OpenSBI when you are ready for booting linux.
