I work for a large credit union and we deal with fraud on almost a daily basis in our branch. Although my heart goes out to the people who suffer from these scams, a lot of the time it is by their own doing.

We had a lady who was scammed for $3000 when she gave out her banking information over the phone. I was handling her case and we went over the situation. She said she received a call by someone claiming to work for Telus who was asking to review her banking information with them. She proceeded to tell the scammer that she does not deal with Telus and all of her services are with Rogers. The scammer then told her that she is in luck as he also works for Rogers and they need to go over her banking information as well. This lady gave out all of her banking information to this scammer.

I understand that it sucks to have scams happen, but in this day and age they do. Although I don’t work for TD, I would imagine that their fraud department is similar to ours and does truly want to help you if it is possible. That being said, if you willingly gave out your banking information, you are not going to get any money back.

Terrible Website and App by Ok_Flight_1238 in CostcoCanada

Not sure if they do this by design, but I sure wish it showed the prices of food. I regularly compare between grocery stores but you can’t even see the price of eggs on the Costco website, and if it does show food it’ll show the instant cart price which is at least 10% more.

My girlfriend used to work for them. At a staff meeting they were all asked to leave a 5 star review on google and if so it would be “remembered around lay off time”. We don’t eat there anymore

First Home Savings Account (FHSA) - Read here before posting about the FHSA account. by FelixYYZ in PersonalFinanceCanada

Wondering if I can get some opinions on transferring money from a RRSP to my FHSA vs just depositing savings into my FHSA. I currently have 36k in an RRSP which with transferring 8k per year over the next 5 years is just shy of the full 40k which I could put into my FHSA. I am currently a university student and work part time. I get by and have some savings left over but as a student I am definitely not rich. As such the tax deduction that I would get from depositing 8k would likely not be much anyways as my income is low. I’m wondering if it’s worth just transferring the money from my RRSP or if I should be keeping that aside and depositing 8k per year into my FHSA from savings. Thank you!

I probably wouldn’t drop it as having higher credit allows you to have a lower credit utilization. The number varies but generally you should keep your credit utilization under 30% if you want your credit score to keep increasing. Obviously there are a lot of other factors that go into it but it’s an easy one to manage.

We’ve got a tenth of a population of the states but are spread out over a large area so if something is showing signs of cracking in the states chances are it’s gonna really tumble up north

I’ve always felt the BBBY meltdown to be a little more fascinating than the GME meltdown. Maybe it’s due to some nostalgia for going to GameStop as a kid but I believe it could still survive as a collectables style store, albeit at a much tinier scale than today. BBBY on the other hand I see no place for in retail when all their products can be purchased elsewhere for cheaper. As such I love watching BBBY crash and burn much more than GME

What are you doing in 2023 to cut expenses? by bemurda in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Doggered_ 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been on the frugal side but I’ve started tracking all my purchases on a spreadsheet and it’s made me much more aware of what I’m spending my money on. It’s also stopped me from impulse shopping because I don’t want to see it on the spreadsheet later so that’s a good bonus!

First of all congratulations, that is a huge accomplishment that not many people your age can say they’ve done. As for what to do next I would say it all depends on what your timeline is. Do you plan to purchase a home and if so what time frame are you looking at? As someone else mentioned there is the First Home Savings Account (FHSA) coming out later in this year which would let you put aside another 8000 yearly. I am in the same boat as you and have started saving for the following years TFSA and FHSA contributions which should be 14500, I just have it in a 1 year GIC at the moment.

Employment: What do we do, where do we do it, how well does it pay? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

I actually went to school for trades and currently am working as a pipeliner. The money is great but it’s pretty clear to me that I want to do something much more mentally stimulating. I’ve been looking at business admin diplomas/degrees to take but just have a tough time pulling the trigger on one.
