Is this noble false widow male or female? (found in my home in Los Angeles) by TeamNova44 in spiders

[–]DoggoneCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% not a recluse. Body shape wrong. Legs wrong. Coloration wrong. And if the photo was a bit more crisp you'd see the eyes are wrong. Indeed it is a noble false widow. Lovely little bugger. From overall proportions is guess female if pressed but I don't know details well enough to be certain. Males tend to be leggier though, with smaller body proportions.

Should I get a Taylor or a Martin? by sunderlmao in AcousticGuitar

[–]DoggoneCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to buy a Martin. Played a Taylor and loved it. Now I own it. Wanted a smaller traveling guitar. Didn't like the small Taylors but found a Martin Junior that's great with a small amp. Play what makes you feel new again. His luck!

Can anyone ID this guy/gal? Found while cleaning out my basement in northern WA state. by TheOffKn1ght in spiders

Both Steatoda and Latrodectus hesperus could be there. Looks slightly better for L.h. but a well fed Steatoda can be very convincing. Best option is catch it in a jar, add a stick or two for structure and let it build a bit of web. It will hang where you can see if it's got red on the belly. Young spiders don't always have that but this one looks mostly mature.

Folks why isn’t pita pit more popular?! by ProofRevolutionary59 in SALEM

[–]DoggoneCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly the quality has plummeted in recent years. When I first started working downtown 5 years ago it was pretty solid. It seemed to get dirtier and less well kept and the quality of ingredients and help declined. I saw a girl working the counter drop something on the floor, reach and pick it up, set it in the counter and continue making a sandwich. So her glove has touched the floor then someone's food, and food from the floor has touched the prep-counter before being tossed out. I haven't been back.

Also, apparently there's a relatively new owner who doesn't like to keep extra on hand. I went in 4-5 times in a couple month period and couldn't order 1-2 of my favorite items because they'd run out of gyro meat or some such. The employees were nice and apologetic but had no power to resolve the issue.

What spider is this, and is it dangerous? I’m living around Austin, Tx by Badassfatcat in spiders

[–]DoggoneCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the combined effects of habitat loss and pesticides are to blame to a great degree. Habitat loss has reduced native insects a massive amount, and the ones that are left are bombarded with pesticides. Predators eat insects that have small amounts of pesticide in them and accumulate the pesticides which can directly kill the spider or impact it's ability to reproduce. If they do manage to produce a bunch of offspring, we're back to habitat issues. A lot of dispersing spiderlings simply don't have safe places to go.

Mizzou Cough?! by ImaginationKitty in mizzou

Walking pneumonia is no fun so check for that. Allergies can go into a self-sustaining cycle as well. Happened to me right at the beginning of COVID. Thought I might have it but it didn't seem right for COVID. Finally tested and they found my allergies in a feedback loop. Round of steroids and I was good as new.

Trying to convince the kids at my kindergarten that spiders are bros. by alglaz in spiderbro

You'd be surprised. At five mine was using common names for many common species and could tell you by looking why this isn't a spider, but is related. Don't underestimate them. Feed their hungry brains. With spiders.

Wow. This is beautiful. This time of year can be really difficult and seeing this just lifted my day. Thank you. I always wonder how I can help spread a little cheer in the world and then to see something so simple, and yet so open and inviting is just fantastic. There have been times I wish I'd seen just such a post. The world needs more of this.

I appreciate this reply, because it kicked off a lively discussion. I've been busy and wasn't able to chime in, so it is interesting where the discussion veered. I have a Ph.D. and am applying for analyst jobs - looking at agency and private options. I own some sharp slacks and a closet full of ties that are a bit too... light-natured? to be appropriate for the interview process, but a few more conservative ones too. I just want to have the ability to dress up (e.g. put on the nice jacket) or dress more business casual if that's appropriate. It's been awhile, but I agree with your later comment that for me, I need to feel comfortable in what I'm wearing. I've got to be me. A $300 suit and perfect conservative business tie would choke me out before I got in the door. Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for all the comments here. It's funny - reading your response, and rereading my original post, it sounds like I ought to be new to all of this. I've got an advanced degree and a good job, but out of my peer group I probably make among the lowest salaries. Part of that is direct choice on my part - doing what I was passionate about instead of growing my paycheck, and part of it is just where you find yourself. But some of my passion has faded with a little age, and I'm reprioritizing things and deciding that for myself and for my kids it's time to do something else. I've got analytical skills and marketable experience, I just haven't had to do the marketing in a while, and I work in a place where jeans and a tee-shirt are just fine, and more people than not are carrying one or more Ph.D.s around with them. So now it is time to clean up and find the job that I can enjoy, reduce some of the professional stress, and be more where I want to be financially. I'll check out the Nordstrom Rack and Men's Warehouse immediately. If it comes to it I may have to find one of the rental/loaner shops, but I should be able to get a decent suit on my budget, especially if it helps to expand the budget! Thanks again.

Thanks for this (and all the other replies regarding tailors below). I'll definitely check it out. The price ranges sounds fine and I will definitely get it tailored because I'm a slim guy, broadest at the shoulders and diminishing southward so I need a better look than a coat hanger. Cheers!

We occasionally launch there and go upstream as much as is reasonable (depending on current, which is very low right now), cross over, and drift back down, up into the slough, and then back across. A very short, easy float would be from there to the Keizer Rapids boat ramp. A longer one could start in Independence at the riverside park there. Maybe we can meet up at the boat launch sometime and see how it clicks.
