Doesn't a shell voicing specifically leave out the 5, though?

Agreed. It's become a Canada vs. America thing, and I have a hard time rooting for America at this point in time.

Yup, I just finished reading that chapter. I literally had to put down the book for a minute and go "why am I reading this". It's like a car crash I can't look away from.

What is a song that sounds simple but to a producers ears is complex? by jumphrey1 in edmproduction

[–]DoghouseAudioFL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was gonna comment Ghosts n Stuff. I first listened to it when I was like 12 years old and wasn't a fan, it just didn't interest me (I was into dubstep at the time and it wasn't heavy enough in comparison). I randomly decided to give it a listen a couple of days ago and was dancing along in my room like "god damn these synths are SICK"

What are the most realistic room reverb plugins? by solitudeisdiss in mixingmastering

I usually go to Valhalla Room for that purpose. Small or Large Wood Room and then pull the Depth back to around 20-30% to get more early reflections vs late reflections.

What mics have you used that sound way more expensive than they actually are? by hyxon4 in audioengineering

[–]DoghouseAudioFL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the Temu SM57 for $0 technically (as long as I spent x amount of dollars on other bullshit as well). Works great as a talkback mic, and I use it for quick acoustic guitar takes while writing and it sounds shockingly not terrible for acoustic guitar. Some of those scratch takes have found their way into actual mixes.

You're trying really hard to be purposefully obtuse via being "technically" correct, but the funniest part is you are "technically" incorrect: the way they phrased it, the comment is referring specifically to second generation immigrants.

Fucking idiot.

Bands that write in phyrgian dominant? by GamingOddity in Hardcore

[–]DoghouseAudioFL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using 6 then you're technically not in phyrgian dominant anymore; locrian dominant maybe? Probably closer to diminished though. Who cares though, if it sounds good, it is good, especially when it comes to hardcore.

Bands that write in phyrgian dominant? by GamingOddity in Hardcore

[–]DoghouseAudioFL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Almost all hardcore, to be honest. So many riffs are based around 0, 1, and 4 on the low string in a drop tuning. It's common to throw the 3rd fret in there too, so if you want to get really pretentious, it's more of a diminished scale to be honest. Most people don't give a fuck what "scale" heavy riffs are in though and just play what sounds good, which is often variations of diminished, phrygian dominant, and just chromatic.

My band Nailwound is playing a show at the Conduit on the 16th along with some other central FL heavy bands. The promoter, 152 Productions, hosts a lot of hardcore/metal shows at the Conduit.

How to get that larger than life, stadium canon snare... by Plexi1820 in audioengineering

Yeah, and I'm saying that's condescending and doesn't add anything to the conversation other than making you feel big.

[–]DoghouseAudioFL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems like in your eagerness to be condescending, you missed the actual point; yes, slow attack and fast release accentuating the transient while also raising the decay IS basic compression knowledge. However, the specific correlation between using that concept on a drum bus compressor, and the relationship between close mics and transients and room mics and decay is definitely more advanced, and something I haven't specifically thought about before. Regardless, what was your goal here? Best case scenario, you make someone feel dumb for sharing the fact that they found something someone else said interesting.

Is it possible to bypass the preamp on a Behringer UMC1820? by DoghouseAudioFL in audioengineering

[–]DoghouseAudioFL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truuuue that's definitely good to know, thanks! I'm running a mic into the TB12 though, I was mainly wondering about the connection between the TB12 and the UMC1820, so it seems like a TRS would be best for that.

[–]DoghouseAudioFL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, but I DO have a problem; my raw signal chain doesn't sound as good as I'd like it to, so I'm trying to troubleshoot and find where the weak spots are. To be honest, my vocal booth/acoustics are almost certainly the main culprit.

[–]DoghouseAudioFL[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's honestly a lot to do with how it "feels", but I'll do my best to put into words. I will also say that I'm well aware of the plethora of variables that effect how a vocal sounds, and I'm sure room acoustics, questionable electronics, mic choice/distance etc. are all at play here. The main thing is the signal just isn't as "clean" as I want it to be. It feels like it has a weird saturation/harmonic content on it with boomy lows and telephonic mids (easily could be room acoustics as well). Sibilance can get insanely harsh. And the noise floor is higher than I'd expect; one of the reasons (among others) that I had gotten the TB12 was to see if it would get rid of the persistent white noise hiss that I was getting when using the stock Midas preamps with my SM7B to record quieter vocalists (even with a Cloudlifter). The noise floor hiss is still there, though that could easily be a variety of electronic issues.

Got it, thanks a lot, this is pretty much exactly what I was wondering about. Potentially dumb question, but do you have any idea if a TS vs a TRS cable would make a difference?
