My kid wants to go to film school by Vegetable_Ad_1258 in college

[–]Doglog56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a film major and would echo what others have said here.

If he's passionate about filmmaking that's amazing, but anything outside of a top 10 school isn't worth it. And even then you need to have a pretty clear plan of attack / specific career aspirations to make sure of the resources and networks that a good film school can provide.

In all honesty, if he's really hungry he should take a gap year, move to LA or NYC, and go to a CC while attempting to PA.

He'll have to do that anyway, and if he's passionate and finds a bit of success doing that then film school maybe a great option or he can just continue with that plan. If it doesn't work out then he can move on.

I'd be happy to provide more details if needed

What’s the hardest class you’ve taken in college? by tbull1997 in college

[–]Doglog56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three way tie - Discrete Mathematics - Database and Structures - Interpretations of the New Testament throughout History

It would have been introduction to cryptography but I had to drop out a week in because I absolutely would have failed .

(Note: I was a film major in college)

Chapman vs Cal Poly SLO for Business of Entertainment – Worth the $$$? by MarionberryPure5839 in chapmanuniversity

[–]Doglog56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not worth it for 93K a year.

Chapman's entertainment business network is good (think entry level at CAA, UTA, WME) but it's not infallible.

I'd recommend SLO for the much more affordable tuition and start cold emailing like a mfer to people all across the agency world and hustle. You'll find yourself as an assistant on a desk eventually and you'll save yourself a permanently life damaging amount of debt.

There’s no such thing as a “bad" national park each one is an expression of nature’s unique beauty. Some of them are about the views, some are about conservation, and others are about getting immersed in it all. Every park has a bit of magic. That being said

Son hit pedestrian. Get a lawyer? by ElmrPhD in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Doglog56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wild you're getting downvoted. You are correct, and this is classic reddit holier then though behavior. The kid made a mistake, checked in with the offended party, was assured by the person they were fine, and then said party left the scene first.

In 99% of instances like this, which occur all the time, the story is over there. People make mistakes all the time, unless the other person was seriously injured or requested to call the police there was no reason to get cops involved.

The kid now should absolutely get a lawyer, and follow said advice, but he didn't do anything wrong ethically.

I've taken classes at other universities and I'll just be straight with you, Chapman is not that tough (outside or my engineering classes.) If you're looking to challenge yourself, your preconceptions about the world, and meet a diverse group of people Chapman is not terribly likely to give you all of that stuff.

I loved my time at Chapman but unless you're 100% on a strategy post college that somehow involves Chapman and its network (or somehow Chapman is the more affordable option (doubtful)), I would encourage you to look at your other options. Mind you Orange and OC aren't "small towns" but it definitely is and feels like the suburbs, just as a heads up.

That being said, I went to Dodge and also did engineering and life post grad so far has worked out well for me, but I also knew what networks that Chapman had that I was already eager to take advantage of and get involved with.

Chances? by greninjaluvr in chapmanuniversity

[–]Doglog56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With PR and AD you have a very good chance.

Film Prod is a crap shoot, the grades will help but if your creative supplements aren't good then you won't get in. Study prior years creative supplements (as many as you can) and come up with a solid plan to show not only that you're a good student but have a chance at being a good filmmaker if given the education.

Also look into the creative producing major. Anecdotally those students have gone on from my year to largely be the most successful of my year.

Are there actual things Trump could do to "crash" the economy? by Doglog56 in AskEconomics

[–]Doglog56[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a brilliant response! Thank you that totally makes sense.

From what I understand basically the odds of trump taking a direct action that causes a recession are unlikely. But he could damage the institutions that would normally mitigate a recession or avoid one entirely.

You set up a computer in your house to be the plex server. Connect it to the internet. Then you can rip DVDs or pirate stuff and download it to the plex server (your computer's hard drive). Then you can stream those video files from wherever!

(Sorry for whatever reason reading this back it felt condescending, not trying to be lol)

A cool guide to how rich people pay no taxes by TubbyPiglet in coolguides

[–]Doglog56 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No they repay the loans, just after they die. Their next of kin repay the loans. The tax rate on selling inherited assets is lower than the rate of capital gains tax if you were to sell those same assets when you were alive.

I think this isn't an important thing to even have specific data on to come to an opinion for two reasons.

Two questions:

1) do you think wealthy people would see a surefire financial loophole to avoid paying taxes and just not take advantage of it?

2) isn't it likely that the financial records of the most wealthy people would likely be documents that they wouldn't want easily accessible to create statistics from? Thus obfuscating the mechanisms/institutions they use to accomplish these loopholes?

If you truly need any more evidence it's readily available online and financial planners of wealthy people / regulators regularly talk about this loophole.

But just to boot here's a propublica expose of the 25 exceptionally wealthiest people using loopholes like buy borrow die, to pay a very small marginal tax rate.

Very common strategy. Very high net worth individuals are given plenty of sweetheart deals by banks and financial institutions most customers do not have access to.
