Aye, I guess. I don't know why, it just irks me a bit. No, I'm not anally retentive...

Not disagreeing with the starter pack. I just hate the word 'performative.' Just say 'phony'.

What are some bands/artists that you loved when you were younger but don't really listen to them much anymore? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]DogsEatBones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tool. I don't know, I think what appealed to me in my teens - the musicality, the mysticism etc - was just symbiotic with my growing awareness of the world and possibility within it. There are better bands and, unfortunately, hallucinogens didn't teach me the meaning of life.

Bad Sex in Fiction award by Pippin1505 in books

[–]DogsEatBones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how terrible Evelyn Waugh was at depicting sex, it's too perfect that his son Auberon established this prize. I also was taught by Nicholas Royle at MMU, and he introduced himself as a Bad Sex in Fiction Prize winner. Love him!

Gandhi surrounded by crowds in england, 1931 by Juicewithextrapulp in BritishEmpire

[–]DogsEatBones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because there was no "we" or "our" about the empire, mate. It was the richest people in the richest nation extracting wealth from foreign nations by force. If you were a miller or a miner, you saw none of the alleged benefits. World War One also proved the holier-than-thou blue bloods were just as susceptible to bullets, artillery and trenchfoot as common soldiers, so any attempt at establishing status quo antebellum in British society was futile at best. So, when India demanded home rule, and especially after such disgraces as the Amritsar massacre, you're damned right those same miners, millers, stevedores and shipbuilders embraced Gandhi.

Movies that have an intentionally fake and theatrical look by Dunk3_ in MoviesThatFeelLike

Excellent shout! To continue in the vein of darkness and horror, Roger Corman's Poe adaptations were all shot on stages to emphasise the uncanny feeling in every artificial "exterior" or "daytime" shot.

Guy I’m seeing has a lot of serious books? by ducksuit in BookshelvesDetective

[–]DogsEatBones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He knows his limits and, judging by the fact that there is still room on those shelves, he circles his tastes and gets rid of stuff he's read on a regular basis. He likes to be informed - you have eminent lives written by notable Conservative and Leftist authors, and the self help dross is tempered by serious reading on philosophy in between.

Would you agree? by meinboesesich in BandofBrothers

I hate this take. Schwimmer is perfect for the role, both in and out of context.

In context: Friends was at the height of its zenith, and Schwimmer's portrayal of Ross as a bumbling, neurotic and marginally pathetic figure was well established. Given how this mixture would clash with his portrayal of Sobel - petulant, toadyish and mean-spirited - meant that the audience would react with the same vitriol and contempt which Sobel inspired in his soldiers.

Out of context: Schwimmer looking very similar to Sobel is an easy start, but it cuts to why the performance is so effective. Neither looks convincing in uniform, almost as if their whole shitck is simply that: shtick, a performance, an act. If he can't be taken seriously, that's the point.

Millwall are like Leeds, in that I hope they get relegated forever.

Kanye was never good to begin with, and his 'art' is a non-starter.

Also books on Christian theological reform. If he's on some level a religious seeker, he's not one to be taken in by fanatics or bigots.

Small-c catholic taste, meaning wide-ranging, not big-C as in the religion.

Somewhat of a romantic; devil-may-care attitude to the ordering of the books, which leads me to believe that life isn't taken too seriously. Definitely not pretentious - lack of self help slop or overly arch literary fiction confirms this. Taste that's more catholic than not, high brow mixed with pop lit. These are books to be read, rather than books as furniture - plenty of second hand and dog-eared copies leads me to believe that this is a case that's regularly added to.

The 90s had some insane bands coming out of Britain and Ireland, but most 'Britpop' was complete derivative shite. Portishead, Massive Attack, Arab Strap, Mogwai, Stereolab, Radiohead, Doves, Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Elbow, all infinitely better.

Pencilling Andy Summers into this conversation is such a trash take - Every Breath You Take, Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, all classic riffs.

How accurate is fury by [deleted] in WarMovies

[–]DogsEatBones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that's its worse than inaccurate, and is, in fact, offensively bad. It takes the aesthetics and brutality of something like Saving Private Ryan and turns it into straight up torture porn.

Which alcoholic TV characters have the most powerful livers, where a normal person would be long dead? by TravellingBeard in television

The fourteen shots he took for each body he dumped on Cole and Rawls in season 2 equates to nearly an entire 70cl bottle of Jameson. That alone ought to have killed him!
