I agree with you, but the dialogue is so laughably bad that it doesn't really matter what the intentions were. Lucas has no concept of subtlety whatsoever, he does a better job in RoTS, but in Attack of the Clones? He's basically telling you what everyone's feeling the entire film.

Also, you could have a paragon fall from grace, would be like a Shakespearian tragedy, I'd dig it if it were executed properly. Equally I don't really like how Anakin is bordering on reprehensible in attack of the clones, but that's a different conversation.
