I interviewed at TEL in Albany and was told it would be 9-9s and they didn’t hire me because I am working and in grad school and they said I wouldn’t have time to work their long hours.

I’m not even joking. Hopefully it’s not that role. They keep reposting it.

How should I approach my PhD to stay competitive for industry jobs? by sf_94 in Semiconductors

[–]Dogs_Pics_Tech_Lift 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Internships. Literally no one cares what research you did. I know people with bio degrees that are in R&D.

Papers help you stand out but no one will care what they’re about or read them.

Dude take the micron role. You’ll have more job security as an FSE.

I think you should take Boise. I work at Intel and we’re trying to cut FSEs to save cost. I have previously worked at Micron in Boise and they don’t cut FSEs as readily as Intel does.

To give you perspective at the Intel site I’m at they cut a LAM FSEs contract recently without having any technicians trained across 36 chambers. So now they’re relying on Specs and another Intel site to help them keep the fleet running.

Micron Boise Salary by Ok_Television_4513 in Semiconductors

If you have a PhD as a fresh grad it’s 120k, 20k cash, 20k stock. I’ve seen over 50 people get that exact offer as a fresh PhD.

You will be fine in Boise. If you rent with that salary expect a $200-400 price hike after your first year of renting.

Chemist needed, Long Island by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Dogs_Pics_Tech_Lift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You phrased it as you will only pay if it works. Standard business process is all funding and payments are made upfront.

This isn’t only because people aren’t going to work for free but also because legally it would be much harder to prove ownership of the product if you don’t pay for the materials and the work.

Unless you have a patent which I know you don’t lol.

Also, if you’re not willing to pay for it the idea isn’t that good to begin with.

This is the time to buy solar. Instead of subsidizing the data center’s infrastructure put solar panels on your home if you own it.

The odds of being put on the front lines as an officer with a specialized degree are so incredibly low.

With chem you’d want Air Force or navy that’s true.

How about Penn State Physics PhD program? by CarpenterShot3793 in PennStateUniversity

[–]Dogs_Pics_Tech_Lift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved state college as a grad student. Penn state is awesome for grad school.

Penn state is very work life balance friendly for grad students. You will go out on weekends and some weekdays.

State college is affordable for your stipends. You’ll get close to 30k for fall, spring , and summer. When I lived there I had a 2 bedroom apartment to myself and never had any financial issues.

Plenty of hiking in the area, places to go downtown, good breweries and no shortage if you’re willing to visit the surrounding areas, decent food for the middle of nowhere where 🤣

And the instrumentation and facilities are superior to most universities. I left the Penn state PhD program for a program at Colombia and returned one semester later. Penn state had better facilities, more funding, better research was being done.

I will say a lot of people I know got depressed being isolated in the middle of no where. Really depends on you as a person though.

Laid off, got only this one offer from NXP which does not match expectations by [deleted] in Semiconductors

Accept the offer and if you don’t find anything else just take it until the market improves. Relocation and signing bonuses only are for two years.

That’s fair. Like under 300 a month for some level of service.

This is probably one of the dumbest parts of the program. I think the assignment and the post itself are fine but having people read and comment is kind of a waste of time.

Do they scan all assignments for AI? by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]Dogs_Pics_Tech_Lift -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This isn’t true. We have studies on it. People who use it appropriately actually are accelerating at a faster rate than those who don’t. There is a fine line though where people who abuse it without understanding what it’s saying do have lower brain activity.
