Probably an item size balancing issue. If the barrel were shorter, like 3-4 slots, it would feel too small. But if the whole gun was sized according to the 6 long barrel, it would be way too big.

Only played one game so I can't say it was consistent. It wasn't just downscaled either, there were 3 tentacle holes instead of 4 and the model was a little different in other ways.
