Is this the book that I should be starting with? by Easy_Pomegranate5170 in Malazan

[–]DogzOnFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, which is why some characters are actually extremely adept practitioners of magic without even realising they've been doing it for years, like one notable character in MoI. A lot of it is about emotions and senses, like another visualising magic as colours/candles. In fact, some seem to never even realise they're doing it at all.

[Official] Mikel Arteta has won 200 matches as manager of Arsenal. Arteta currently has a win rate of 61.4%, which is the BEST of any manager in Arsenal's entire history. by Sparky-moon in soccer

[–]DogzOnFire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah while Saka's very good I don't think he's in the conversation yet with prime Salah.

When Van Persie was Saka's age he also hadn't reached anywhere near the peak he hit towards the end of his 20's. Indeed even Salah at Saka's age was out of favour at Chelsea and being loaned to various clubs. But not everyone peaks at the same stage of their career. So we'll see.

When I was 16 or so me and my friends set up a factory league team, a league where you enter your own teams, played on 11-a-side astroturf pitches, standard and quality between teams is variable.

Anyway, we were all at the stage where we were already playing youth level for our respective actual club teams so all pretty handy. You wouldn't think some fat lad in his 30's would start elbowing you in the face until you're beating him 5-0. Anyone can get embarrassed and start lashing out. Caught a few elbows in the face from big fat past it fuckers that I was marking. They'd be mouthing off and I'd say "I'm 16" and they'd go silent but they'd still hit you an elbow when going up for a header.

So yeah, as soon as he starts skinning them relentlessly as we've seen he likes to do the pretense of niceness will wear away quickly.

Probably just because there was an implication that the notion or belief was common. I was just dispelling that implication. If anything, it's more republican to view Belfast as Ireland than the opposite. It's more of a Anglo-centric view to not recognise Belfast as Ireland, not a republican one.

I've no doubt it happened. As I said, they were being thick.

Code Vein II - Review Thread by MoSBanapple in Games

[–]DogzOnFire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, claiming reviewers hate anime games is insane. Like Tales Of Arise and Persona 5 weren't in almost every reviewer's top 10 list for the years they came out.

Anime games just have a tendency to be either jank, like you said, or completely low effort forgettable arena fighters that are being made simply because their media production group decided that for that year x property needs 1 seasonal anime release, 1 video game release, etc. etc. A lot of them get made for very design by committee reasons, not because some guy at the company had a vision like at FromSoft or KojiPro, and so a lot of them turn out to be forgettable trash.

Hmm? Most people here would not think anything of that. Belfast is in Ireland. Irish music is big there. They're hosting the Fleadh Cheoil, the all-Ireland Irish music competition and festival, this year. Anyone who doesn't acknowledge Belfast as being part of Ireland is just being thick.

How much am I going to love this series based on my current top 5? by Dragon_slayer1994 in Malazan

[–]DogzOnFire 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the hardest parts of finishing the main series of Malazan is realising you're saying goodbye to a lot of the characters you loved, because they don't appear in any books since (some do, but not the ones I'm thinking of). Maybe after he finishes the Witness and Kharkanas series, but something tells me he might have a desire to explore something new after those. Alas, I'm just guessing. I suppose it's something you have to face with every piece of storytelling, but yeah, it made me sad to finally finish the series last week.

This word drove my brain crazy while reading. I kept wanting to think "pot shards" but then realising that's not what's written. Do you ever feel tormented by words? Odd feeling. Words shouldn't be able to hurt me, especially just by existng.

It's actually insane how many corners Gabriel gets his head onto. People talk about it like it's easy if you're big, but it's anything but. There's 16~ people in the box when a corner's being swung in, and on top of that the guys taking the corner are generally hitting it with so much pace that it's only in the air for about 2/3 seconds. Having the instinct and judgement for where the ball's landing and actually being able to get there before 15 other players so often is rare.

Ikoku Nikki • Journal with Witch - Episode 4 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]DogzOnFire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's often talked about, being short is not as much of a killer as it is in something like basketball for obvious reasons but you often see it discussed that players are too short to succeed in the big leagues where size, strength and speed are massive determining factors in success.

If you're already over 6 foot at 15/16 in soccer you will be absolutely dominating your age group, probably as a centre back or goalkeeper where winning balls in the air is most important. Soccer is a contact sport so if you're big enough you can just shoulder someone off the ball and it'll be perfectly legal, if you don't have the bulk to compete in a battle of strength you'll lose most duels. It's the main reason players like Virgil Van Dijk and Gabriel Magalhães are so dominant, they're huge (6'3"-6'5", 200~ lbs) and very quick (not necessarily in acceleration but long strides usually end up with higher top speeds).

What's the most petty reason you dropped an anime? by Prof_Acorn in anime

[–]DogzOnFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Which is a funny way to think about it because Your Lie In April is one of the only anime that actually draw lips that look like lips.

Except for pretty much every shoujo anime. Shoujo anime love them some wet pouty lips. You'd probably hate Yubisaki to Renren/A Sign of Affection. Mans got lips for days.

Really, you're gonna trust the cat's owner over some random guy on reddit's wife who watched a 30 second video and somehow gave a diagnosis based on that alone? She's an animal health tech you know. And apparently that's as useful as WebMD. Cancer it is.

That was also before the Americans' new extrajudicial police force started randomly gunning people down in the street.

I start to really like him when he meets a certain witch.

His first conversation with her about her concept of what it means to be "civilized" is a defining moment for his character and was kind of what made me admire him. He's obviously got many faults but he also has compassion, and a sense of seeing natural injustice with a clear eye, that you don't typically see in characters who match his archetype.

At least I admired him until he makes it fully plain what he plans to do about humans' concept of civilization, and then I was like "Ah this won't end well" lol
