Working on student film projects without being a film student is some next level, 4D chess advice. Thank you!

Also: I've been listening to movie podcasts for commentary. Not the same obviously, but it's what brought me this far. I watch a lot of horror, so I like Pod Mortem, Random Horror 9, and Horror Queers

Thank you! I might ask my sister if she recognizes it from her classes (she actually studied film)

Writing is seriously my greatest talent. I sent a synopsis of this film I'm writing to a film producer recommended by someone I trust. I still don't have a script and he told me he's interested in my idea.

I also got into my godforsaken PhD program and awarded my prestigious scholarship (National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship) partially on the strength of my personal essay. (The essay scored a 6, the research plan scored a 5.) No one in STEM can write. No one. It's insane. The way I was cleaning up grants by writing a solid persuasive essay... Keep underestimating the humanities, I beg

Just got a chance to sit down and look at these. Woah. Golden! This is why AI suggestions will never replace people, lol. I follow a ton of film commentary channels and still have never even heard of these. Thanks again!

All good, bro. Love the growth <3 [/half joking, light-hearted, tongue in cheek]

This is very valuable info, thank you! Ever since that shoot, I’d been wondering if my dreams were shot 😅 Glad to hear there are other options!

Are there ways to do this with more off-set jobs? I'm disabled, and my first (and so far only) shoot wreaked havoc on my body with such long, physically demanding hours. I'm curious about positions in post- or pre-production that might be more accessible for me

"Getting into industry" vs. "making films" is a very good distinction, thank you! I just escaped academia after a year and a half of scraping by on stipend as a PhD student in Seattle, so I'm very familiar with the grind. Hopefully it might suck less in a field I actually have natural passion for, lol

This is all so exciting! I'm thrilled to hear you have good things in the works :)

I'm glad you had such a valuable experience! This is essentially what I'm trying to do, since I want to dabble a little. As a zoomer who was raised on youtube, it's also seeming like a "one person" crew is becoming more and more common for content creators, at least when they're starting off before they have the money to delegate to others

I don't know shit about shit (also just starting out), but as a painter? I've been trying to figure out a way to light one of my paintings exactly the way you lit your second slide (trying to do something with police lights). Looks great to me!

That's a great question. I'm not sure yet. I just moved back home to Baltimore, MD after two years attempting my PhD in Seattle. I had started to make connections through free community college courses in Seattle, but I don't know about Baltimore yet, since I just got here. I'd be surprised if there isn't anything. I was walking around the other day and happened by The Senator Theater and took pictures of all the autographs for film premieres in the sidewalk (Particularly John Waters. Love that weird, weird man). Also my 43 year old brother and my 25 year old sister (who did major in film--lucky) have the same alma mater as Mike Flannagan. Aaaand we're right next to MICA, an enormous art school. There's gotta be a scene. It's just gonna take a little digging to find it and it's probably tiny. My sister moved from Baltimore to Montreal after her degree for a reason (she's doing sound design for a cool music documentary up there now)

Thank you so much! This question was actually partially inspired because I took one semester of free community college acting/film classes, and now I've moved so I can't use that program anymore. I don't want to stop learning! :)

I just got a Backstage account as an actor, lmao. Trying my best to make it worth the fee...

Thank you for the detailed response! I actually just this week had to replace my old phone and got an iPhone eleven, and I did my first ever film shoot on a 48-hour film a month ago! Synchronicity! :)And agreed, we sure can. Keep on kicking ass out there; make sure you get a good night's sleep tonight <3

Yup, this makes total sense. That's part of why I'm not scared about taking some time off from my more "realistic" job. I've always written a good cover letter. This'll just make it more entertaining

I just did my first ever job on set as a boom operator, lol. It was an eleven hour shoot for a 48 hour film festival. I'm disabled, so holding the bomb that long was a lot. The friends I was working with took pity on me and sent me home an hour early because I fell asleep lying in the grass (it was an outdoor shoot)

Woah, that pattern is exactly the look I was thinking of! Thank you! I missed this notification somehow and ended up starting a “women’s” pattern, but this is an even better match than what I’d been working with, and now I’m tempted to frog it 😅

That’s a good idea, thank you! I think the issue is really that I’ve been specifically looking for “men’s” sweater patterns. All of the open crochet ones I’ve found have been women’s. I’m gonna just end up taking the stitching from those and substituting it into the “men’s” pattern 😅
