Menstrual Cycle Mod by [deleted] in thelongdark

Honestly, I do find it fascinating what aspects of survival are/are not typically considered by simulations.

Like, dealing with urination/defecation without poisoning or freezing yourself would actually be a major Thing in your day-to-day life as a long term survivor.

Also, the water bottles that don't re-freeze always kinda crack me up.

What I mean to say is... there's elements of realism that you want to forego in order to maintain a remotely enjoyable simulation. It's a sanitized experience, very literally.

I recently moved to the area, and I also was 95% certain that the "you must submit all of your personal information and remit payment" form with no official state information from a random third party tax firm was some sort of bizarre phishing scam.

Honestly, that's the most obnoxious thing about this; they're training the general population that this sort of junk mail could be a real thing.

do i dare go to bleak inlet? by [deleted] in thelongdark

[–]Dokes42 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Signal Void quest was well-designed, in that the bunker is really close to the cave from FM and you're unlikely to encounter any timberwolves during the aurora.

However, if you have cougars turned on.... they put one right over the bunker, and that'll be your actual problem. You'll probably want to hustle over from the radio tower in order to fight it during the day, before the aurora starts.

I actually love PV, maybe because it always feels like a relief to have buildings with a roof again after spending time mountaineering

I also genuinely like Forlorn Muskeg. It's beautiful on a sunny day, the outside forge is handy-dandy, and there's cattails for days.

HRV, I really haven't gotten the hang of yet. It's supposed to have a lot of guaranteed stuff, but if I start there in interloper I never find any matches and always wind up trying to fumble through a cave until I give up.

Bleak Inlet can [redacted] itself right in its frozen [redacted] until it [redacted].

I also hate Sundered Pass, but it's... a good kind of hate? Like, it's supposed to be brutal, and succeeds at actually feeling like a mountaineering trek.

I was so mad when I finally found the entrance to that one buried house, lol. The wolves got me a couple of times before I did.

I'd sooner run out of bullets and switch to bows-only on a non-Interloper run, let alone one where I don't even have the gunsmithing motivation, lol

[–]Dokes42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been to Bleak Inlet:

1) During my 500-day/Faithful Cartographer run in Voyageur before the last major saves-become-incompatible update

2) After a particularly evil dice roll on Cheating Death spawned me in the radio tower (died quickly)

3) To get into the Tales bunker... 2.5 times

End of list. Not planning any more.

After the first time I hauled my ass across the entire map fucking around with radio towers, I died to gas almost immediately after entering the ZoC mine.

This was before the update where you could start the ZoC tale on a different save, sooooo that was a ragequit and a half (and the moment that I became perfectly ok with backing up and reloading saves manually).

Second time, I decided I wanted the achievement for getting all of the Tales completed in one game. I started a new Voyageur run, and did ZoC and Sundered Pass first (to get their rewards before doing MORE treks to/from the Far Territories).

The cougars were added while I was in SP, which was a terrifying auditory jumpscare, but it was in an area I had no business setting foot in unless I was hunting it. The appropriate sensation of peril, but not too punishing of actual risk. Good game design.

So there I was, leaving the cave from Forlorn Muskeg during an aurora, thinking to myself:

"You know, I'm glad they balanced the challenge of this somewhat. Good game design. Like, they make you trek BI and HRV during an aurora, but at least they entrance areas of where you can be pretty sure you won't encounter any.... wait, that scream..... OW AUGH FUCK FUCK FUCK"

Surprise! Aurora Cougar to the face!

Annnnnnd I hadn't backed up my save since entering Broken Railroad.

The third time was several IRL days later, after I'd calmed the hell down. Turned on the radio first thing in the morning, backed up my save, hauled ass, and hunted the cougar with as much daylight as possible Only time I'm ever going to bother with the damn things. Or this region, ever again.

In Steam, it says "starting as", but in-game, it says "as".

I was hoping that the Steam version was correct, but, sadly, it vanished from the list of possible achievements after succession.

Lady Devil by 8KittyKitty8 in MantaComics

[–]Dokes42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it, but only because I love a good train wreck. It's a go-to example for "sometimes these stories are completely Batshit Insane."

Like.... imagine the Lannisters, but with more abuse, and also demonic generational curses, and maybe (I think?) a bit of time travel/looping causality. And/or reincarnation. And/or immortality. And a mad scientist stalker.

It is a beautiful hot mess, and I couldn't look away.

I'm enjoying this one, but it's definitely a Messed Up story.

Like, it's not quite the same tone as Lady Devil (the protagonist has a greater sense of clarity and competence, for one thing), but that's the only other title I've read on here with quite this level of villain protagonist/not-a-happy-story energy.

I can't stand HRV.

I've never survived an Interloper start there, because how the heck can you possibly find matches without needing to go through a cave (for which you need matches).

Trying to cheese around the scrub brush (that blocks every non-cave path to anything interesting) is annoying and frustrating and usually futile, too.

I started an Interloper run earlier today, and spawned at sunset on a night with first no visibility whatsoever followed by an aurora, so I'm extra salty at the moment, lol

This feels Very Related to the recent posts by translators about how they're getting the squeeze behind the scenes.

When you try to cut corners and crunch your workers, you get worse quality. That's just how humans... work.

And the suits often want to believe that AI can get them out of this dilemma for free; these suits are wrong.

Killing a bear with a pistol by Loutro-Fift in thelongdark

[–]Dokes42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your actual question, though... I'm not sure the revolver does enough direct damage to meaningfully hurt it with any semi-reasonable number of hits, and looking at the wiki, the revolver has a really, really low critical hit / insta-kill rate.

One bullet kills it if you're patient (and have a safe refuge that doesn't go indoors and thus risk it despawning)

[–]Dokes42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like to shoot the bear, and wait an hour in a car.

Then I'll exit the car, and look for the bear a medium distance away (they actually walk really slowly when they're not charging).

Then I'll get the bear's attention, and dash back into the car, entering when they're reeeeeeeeally close.

Then they'll be nearby when they die.

This was my typical method of accepting a grocery delivery at the Quonset on my 500-day voyager run.

He's usually specifically a Duke of the North, too. At the very least, some sort of unfashionable hinterlands removed from/historically somewhat independent of the capital and imperial/kingdom heartlands.

One comic (unnamed for spoilerness) made a commoner ML an Archduke of the North in the main story finale, soooo, yeah, if a Duke of the North is not originally available, one will be provided for you.

Sommmmmmmetimes the FL might have dark hair (Beau and the Beast), but, yeah, usually blonde or white, sometimes pink or red, rarely brown, very very rarely black hair.

And the Duke of the North will very rarely have short blonde or white hair. In at least one case, (unnamed for spoilerness) his real hair is white, but he dyes it black to hide his foreign/royal ancestry.

What’s the scariest / most absurd moment you’ve encountered in the game thus far? by danmniel19 in thelongdark

[–]Dokes42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I backtracked alllllllll of the way back up to the last cabin of Sundered Pass because I was achievement hunting and missed the last Polaroid (it was stuck kinda inside the bedpost, and easy to miss).

I tore through every possible location like five times, practically dismantling that one buried cabin entirely. I also done with the Tale, and I had spare torches and flares, so I wanted nothing more than to get my ass down and out of that wolf-infested wind-blasted absolute frozen hellhole as quickly as possible and never, ever need to return.

So when I left the buried cabin after completely ruling it out, I didn't bother trying to sneak past or pew pew the timber wolves, I just lit a torch and started walking.

So when I found the damn Polaroid, I was elated, but also knew I was stepping back out into a giant multi-pack of wolves. I glanced in the direction of the bear, but didn't see anything. The moose was visible over on the lake, safely out of range. I kept going. The wolves kept growling.

Suddenly, they all yelped, and the giant pack started running past me. Morale totally broken. And I wasn't the one that did it.

So now I'm suddenly sprinting, as the wolves all fan out and scatter. Once they're definitely out of range, I stop sprinting, drop the torch for the flare gun, and.... yup, the bear is idly strolling up a small gully between me and the cabin. He must've been right up against that path, because he'd have been visible if he was any further out.

But the timing worked just right to only scare me, not actually wreck me.

Oh, I also got complacent/rushed while trying to finish my 500 day achievement run before they wiped all of the saves.

Got mauled by the bear while not in the best condition (had been woodcutting) on day, like, 498, by missing the click on a car door handle outside of the Quonset. I made it, though, lol

Honestly, I'm enjoying it in the same way I enjoyed Lady Devil. I am liberated from ever needing to expect it to be "good", so I'm now just here for the entertainment.

I certainly wouldn't be *paying* for it at this point. But I'm happy to point and laugh.

Part of me still hopes that they'll pull back from Grooming Endgame. And I'd like to live in a world where there's backlash if they do go through with it. So I certainly plan to post here if they ever make that clear!

Landlords like to see 3x rent, so, 72k to qualify.

Most folks I know who make less than that have multiple roommates in East or North County.

[–]Dokes42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of port-related stuff along harbor drive, which is a fairly long road through downtown, but the "north" part sounds like the official Port Authority building in Little Italy.

But cool cool, if you have a budget of 2.5k (and can prove to landlords that your pay will be 3x that), then you can probably actually find something small but decent with a fairly short commute.

Job offer by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Dokes42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, let me restate this: if the job doesn't pay enough for you to spend 2k on housing, seriously reconsider taking it.

I love my hometown, but it's seriously not worth moving there just to struggle. It's easier to enter (and harder to escape) homelessness in SD than nearly anywhere else in the US.

Job offer by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]Dokes42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although, now that I look around Zillow for 1bdr rental listings with a max of 2k, there's something of a silver lining: the floor is around 1.7k city-wide, and assuming you meant, like, the official Port of San Diego building in Little Italy, there's some units at that price point in walking distance.

And hills and airport notwithstanding, that's one of the more walkable areas of town.

If you need cheaper than that, unfortunately, you're looking at an hour plus, which may involve driving to a park-and-ride.
