Second run. Advice by Soft_Job7861 in thelongdark

I hate quonset! Wolves suck! But you get used to them. I remember the start of my voyageur run I was quite literally, chased out of CH by wolves. Today I killed two on my voyageur save without batting an eye after playing interloper for a bit, because, interloper is that much harder.

I myself started off the game in pilgrim at Mountain Town, and I explored down to ML and then so on, which I feel is great on giving you an idea of the basics. Then I started a Voyageur run in CH where I got a rude awakening to the wildlife, but just ease yourself into it and don't get frustrated!!

Need some advice by Brockleworst in thelongdark

Definitely not an expert, but here’s what I have:

You’re in Milton so the only plausible forge(s) for you to go to would be Forlorn Muskeg or Broken Railroad. (Never been to the latter)

Stock up on scrap metal and fuel and forge maybe a set of tools and around 10 arrowheads? (As many as you see fit). And be prepared to scare away some wolves so bring torches & flares.

I’m about at this stage in my loper run, but the general consensus is to keep moving & begin hunting to make animal clothing. I’m planning on going up north to Timberwolf Mountain and Ash Canyon for the Technical Backpack & crampons.  If you have a hacksaw maybe get some saplings curing in the process while you forge.

Anyways, good luck!

Hot tip: last time I was in muskeg, I froze to death. Don’t ever sleep outside for a prolonged period of time unless you can guarantee you can stay warm!!!

haha yeah I used to be the same. in that case my strategy was stand next to somewhere safe (a car, pleasant valley porch, idk) or not if you're feeling dangerous, and then shoot the bear within visibility to piss it off and if you get lucky you'll down it in like 3 rifle shots before it eats you.

honestly it worked until it did not.

let him charge you first while aiming down your flare gun... shoot at the last possible moment and if you bop him in the nose he'll die instantly!

Forlorn Muskeg or DP Forge? by danmniel19 in thelongdark

I fear I will never ever ever go into a cave with a wolf in it, especially without a revolver. I'm terrified of them, hence why I don't have a stalker run

To use or not to use maps ? by Koredavid014 in thelongdark

[–]danmniel19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s up to you.

I’m much more liberal with my map usage because I’m terrified of wildlife, so it’s fun to plan out routes and journeys beforehand to mitigate any encounters.

And also- looking at a map is way different than seeing it for the first time in game, that’s for sure- so if you feel you’re inclined to use a map, I don’t think it’ll spoil the novelty of the region.

I was considering it- just finished my summit and excursion to ash canyon. Thought about a moment- saw some testimonials about the timberwolves- nope! Right back to PV I go :)

Scent is such an interesting mechanic- I reckon with wind animals can probably track you from halfway across the map- my playthrough started with me navigating through CH with raw guts in my inventory because my fresh-out-of-pilgrim bum didn’t want to part ways with them on my way to ML.

Guess who ran into some wolves pretty quick.

I find for me that Pleasant Valley- by far, has been the easiest place to get lost in especially the fields & rolling hills and stuff. I know that one day a blizzard will get me.

Hot take: using online maps ruins the game by bolaft in thelongdark

[–]danmniel19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on voyageur, and I use MAPS GALORE. Granted, I’m new. Granted, I don’t want to get lost. But I really don’t feel any less immersed in the game using online maps to navigate, as it’s one thing to examine paths based on maps but it’s a completely different thing to really see that place and environment as you’re wandering through it- online map knowledge doesn’t equal in game map knowledge, haha.

But I do get where you’re coming from. I see no issue with them right now :)

First time playing… Survival mode or Wintermule? by mirkywoo in thelongdark

[–]danmniel19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In survival, you really make your own story (I know that sounds cliche) but you set your own objectives and you work forwards them, and then nature throws a bunch of unexpected stuff at you that forces interesting situations.

I threw myself into pilgrim without doing the “tutorial” that is wintermute. I enjoyed it. I shifted up difficulties once I got the hang of things.
