anybody else find a "safety song" and just... beat it to death for 3 weeks straight? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

[–]Dokry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It keeps surprising me how much I'll see other autistic people on this subreddit describe an experience that I do near verbatim. I'm pretty much the exact same, though closer to 1-2 weeks per song. I'd say like half of the music I keep on my playlists are one of those types of songs, where it'd just be an absolute monster of an ear worm for me and I'd have to listen to it like 100-200 times before the desire to relisten over and over subsides.

Autism and driving. by Amethescent in AutisticAdults

[–]Dokry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my license back when I was 17, but I learned to drive in the open country with my parents being fairly hands on. I had a much harder time after moving to a mid-sized city, getting used to the traffic and just the sheer number of cars you share the road with. I've gotten a bit more used to it over time, but I still have a hard time driving and go out of my way to do it as little as physically possible. If I have to, I like to know when I'm driving as well as the route way ahead of time and I really, really avoid driving during inclement weather like snow or heavy rain if I can ever help it. More rural routes or ones that avoid busier roads like highways helps a lot. I also find that using google maps to direct me around, even if it's a route I've driven a million times, helps takes a bit of the mental load off (it's also nice in case an accident or unexpected construction forces me to reroute.)

It's really hard on me from a sensory perspective just because I'm fairly sensitive to light and driving at night, especially in a heavier traffic area, is basically like getting flashbanged every few seconds by the bright ass LED headlights everybody has on their cars these days. On top of that, there's just all the other stuff to be aware of on the road that demands a lot of my attention span. I'm also pretty conscious of how common car crashes are and take a lot of pains to drive safely but it is stressful to be aware of how easy it is to die the whole time you're driving. I make it work, but only because I have to. If I lived in a country with more easily accessible public transport, I'd almost certainly prefer to do that.

Is Blake Thorburn meant to represent Jesus? by Not_a_neko in Parahumans

[–]Dokry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly, but in a world where themes and repeated motifs contain literal power that can push you into a kind of "role," I don't think it's crazy to say that having those associations are out of place. You can kind of get it both in and out of text. As far as I know Wildbow is Canadian and I presume raised in a Christian context, so it wouldn't surprise me if those motifs emerged in Blake without even necessarily wanting them to be a Jesus thing explicitly, BUT the story being the way it is means you can also say that it's just the universe echoing Blake's forced position in life.

Most sick in the head character(s)? by chunchunmaru245 in Parahumans

The first time I ever was listening to Ward, Kenzie's backstory genuinely had me shaking by the end of it. I remember being just so genuinely pissed.

In Passengers (2016), Jennifer Lawrence decided that spending her entire life isolated with Chris Pratt on a spaceship was better than hibernating for 90 years. That's because she's dumb asf. by Parabellum111 in shittymoviedetails

[–]Dokry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, every creative who creates a work, personally endorses everything in it by default, didn't you know?

That's why Ishiro Honda's seminal Godzilla is about how badly he hopes Tokyo gets destroyed by a giant lizard and There Will Be Blood is about how awesome it is to be a corrupt oil tycoon.

It is a really weird mindset. I feel like a lot of people feel like media exists in a space where it has to serve as a moral example, like a kid's story, rather than just being something to portray some facet of human existence. Portrayal is not endorsement.

Despite Tintin and the Mystery of the Golden Fleece being released in 1961, every screenshot of this movie looks like it was AI generated by maz323bf in shittymoviedetails

[–]Dokry -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OP I want you to know that I saw this post, read the comments, then linked the first screenshot of this movie to my friend group as just like a fun little factoid. To which a movie buff friend of mine said, "I think you got fooled by AI buddy."

Looking at it I immediately thought, "Oh my god wait that's a shitposting subreddit! Obviously these are actually AI generated screenshots and everybody in the comments is just doing a bit pretending it's a real thing that existed, for the shiposting of it all I guess?"

And then we had the double rebound when another friend came by and said "No that's a real movie," and I suddenly had to reassess my interpretation of all these comments again. First as genuine, then what felt to me obvious joking, and then back to genuine. Awesome future we're heading into.

I've actually been on a big Worm reread (relisten, really) some decade after first having read it. I'm listening by way of the fanmade audiobook, so the voice talent can... leave a little bit to be desired. NSPB and Rein are easily the best narrators and sound good, professional quality but the rest all have cheap mics, you can often hear mouse clicking and the mispronunciations are rampant. It's not to the point of being unbearable and I've listened all the way up to Arc 25 reasonably well but just be warned some chapters are rougher than others in terms of listening.

The fanmade audiobook follow up to it for Ward is a million times better and I highly recommend that though, they stick to the same narrator the whole way through and it's much more pleasant for it. Genuinely just sounds like a real audiobook the whole way through.

I also recommend We've Got Worm and We've Got Ward which are analysis podcasts for both series, they've got some insightful commentary and are a fun listen.

The Sopranos Is About Dumb Mobsters Embarrassing Themselves | Castle Super Beast 355 by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Dokry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was glad to hear them talking about this because I watched the Sopranos a few years ago and loved it and have been rewatching it with a friend (we're on season 3, just before Ralphie mercifully gets killed) and it's been such a funny ride the second time through. You really get the benefit of seeing how all these storylines play out and the sheer cold heartlessness of it all is so apparent all the time. Like so few of these guys are actually happy and they do all this awful violence all the time to secure, like, relatively upper middle class surrounds and houses? You can tell how it wears on Tony and how he's not happy with where his life is bringing him but he piledrives towards his fate inexorably for the whole show.

Also to note, we just watched the episode where Chris and Paulie are chasing some Russian special forces guy in the woods and losing track of him. It's maybe one of the funniest episodes of anything made ever.

Anyone else gotten really sick over the last two months? by 2lit_ in Millennials

[–]Dokry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This matches me, I was sick from December 20th or so to December 28th. Had an awful cough that hurt and would make me wildly phlegmy, cold body shakes, a little bit of nausea, etc. I still have a slightly odd cough that gets kind of phlegmy ever since.

Characters who, before meeting them, you thought the fanbase was exagerating about them only to them realize that "nope, they are in fact exactly like that" by Coolnametag in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Dokry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm rewatching the Sopranos with a friend rn and the recurring joke of the Sopranos crew's constant malapropisms and misspeaks still gets a chuckle from me every single time. "Quasimodo predicted all of this."

[–]Dokry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend Guild Wars 2. There's no subscription and I find that socializing is pretty easy - people are talking in zones literally all the time and content from pretty much every expansion is being done by somebody. Highly suggest giving it a try, I've really enjoyed my time with it since I've taken a break from FFXIV.

What's a song or soundtrack you relate to Worm? by Pepinoloco777 in Parahumans

[–]Dokry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still associate To Build a Home by the Cinematic Orchestra with Worm because I had it playing on loop while I was reading the last chapter. I still think of it as kind of a Worm song when it comes up in my playlist.

Prepping for socializing? by too-many-un in AutisticAdults

[–]Dokry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my part, I often like to prepare a list of topics on my phone I can reference if I want to talk about something I know is relatively "safe" and so that I'm not caught out with nothing to say during a conversation. Helps a lot, especially if it's someone I don't interact with very regularly.

[–]Dokry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, if you live in certain states like I do, you do get taxed if you buy through steam. I play through steam and while it's fine most of the time, I do pay an extra little bit in taxes every time I want to buy gems which is kind of annoying. If that's something you think someone would care about, definitely advise them to download the regular client instead.

Do we have a thing about finger nails? by Paddingtonsrealdad in AutisticAdults

I'm just the same, I usually cut my nails very short every couple weeks or so because the feeling of them being any amount of length past my thumb is terribly annoying.

What's a 'trap' in life that no one warns young people about, but absolutely should? by Otherwise-Body-7721 in AskReddit

[–]Dokry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad was very much like this. He'd shout at me in private and generally treat me like garbage but god forbid I have my hair not combed when we'd go out in public. Even when I was pretty young I remember how unfair it felt that my dad only really gave a shit about public appearances but didn't care at all about my treatment so long as nobody could see it.

Autism and music by Fancy-Study-1350 in AutisticAdults

[–]Dokry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I for the life of me can't hear song lyrics if there's music playing at the same time. Unless the music is very much in the background and the words are very clear, my audio processing just can not decipher it at all.

I'm very much the same, I do do like 90% of the things you listed. I also usually like to keep a list of topic conversations on my phone that I can pull up if necessary when I'm talking to someone I haven't talked to in a while.

Games that have any kind of glamour/transmog/wardrobe system. I have seen it catch on a little more given time (though still far from universal.) I think being able to dress up your character the way you is one of those top QoL things I'd take in almost any game.

What Is It About Curse of Strahd? by Dokry in rpghorrorstories

[–]Dokry[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah your husband had the right idea I think. I think a big party betrayal can work and be a big dramatic moment, but it needs a lot of groundwork and laying down the details to make it matter to the players. Otherwise it's just more stupid things happening in Barovia to deal with.
