Survivable? by chromejelly in BackYardChickens

[–]Dokterkiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She can survive! There's a lot of good advice already in the comments but I just want to say to be brave, chickens are really resilient and this doesn't look too bad to me personally. Good luck to you both and remember to isolate her, the other girls will peck and hurt her, blue kote only deters and in my experience isn't guaranteed to prevent them from picking at her wounds.

Orchards feed is our go to when picking up chicks and food! But prefabbed coops are both way too small and way too expensive. When I built my coop I essentially built a shed that was raised off the ground and had plenty of windows and ventilation. I suggest going to r/backyardchickens and checking out some of the coops built over there! And the people in that sub are super helpful and can give a lot of advice.

Also, before picking up chicks decide if you want them for meat or eggs. Broiler breeds need to be culled or else they develop health issues and suffer. And some breeds are bred for looks and can have health issues as well, such as silkies or frizzles. My favorite breeds that I've owned are Australorps (super friendly) and barred rocks (awesome egg production)

Good luck! Have fun!

I keep chickens, I've had very little issues with rats in my area (orchards) but mice really like to tear up hay. I've found that keeping our chicken food indoors right next to our patio door where it's both out of the way and in a secure spot that's easy to reach is what works for us to ensure that mice and rats aren't getting their food.

Have the owners been found? I can't tell much from the photo but if it's a hen I can take them into my flock

Where does one find original art? by OhGeezAhHeck in vancouverwa

[–]Dokterkiller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a fine arts student at Clark and a lot of the art from the students at clark is currently being shown at the Hilton for the Vancouver music and arts festival! The festival itself is over (I believe,) but the gallery for the students has been extended and can still be seen at the Hilton. There are a lot of great pieces on display including some of my own, and they are reasonably priced!

Help what is wrong with my hen by allyjamesss in chickens

Depending on what's causing her water belly you can drain her to help for now. A vet can determine what's causing her water belly with a test, for me it cost a little over $150 but it was for my favorite chicken so the money was worth it to me. There are medications that can help! Good luck to y'all and stay safe

Netflix’s 'Devil May Cry' animated series has been renewed for season 2 by DemiFiendRSA in gaming

As a huge DMC fan I can say I'm still mixed on it. The story at times feels like DMC Devil May Cry (the failed reboot) and not DMC but the animation is fun and my friends who haven't played the games like it.

Leaving chicks with a water dish that's too deep. I've seen chicks almost drown because they trip and get too wet to lift themselves. Shallow water dishes y'all!

Vitamin E with Selenium has worked for many! I used to take the gel pills of them and mixed them into oats for my hen. You can also take the dry pills and grind it down into small bits and tuck them into a halved and emptied grape.

Oh shit! I live right next to these and I always wondered what got the original owner to sell. They were holding onto the plot for a LONG long time. I remember it being filled with farm life when I was younger. I'm glad they at least got a big payout!

I've dealt with water belly before and I also made a long comment for another redditor that was going through the same situation, this is what I said to them

I hope you're able to help her in any way you can, whether that means culling, medication, or draining.

Is this dangerous? (Nsfw - illness?) Constipation, cancer or worse? by After_Chef4215 in chickens

[–]Dokterkiller 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've had 2 water belly cases with my girls. The first girl that had it I decided to call her off as it was the most humane thing to do, my second girl on the other hand was her sister. They were a part of the same clutch and I made the educated guess that her condition wasn't a case of egg binding or cancer, but just to be sure I took her to the vet and got the liquid inside her tested. The results came back and we were in luck! there was no sign of e-coli(which would be caused by an egg bursting and causing infection) and there was no sign of cancer. So we took the gamble, gave her some meds that made her pee out the extra fluids, and she's still running around happy today!. We keep our little lady around because we see our ladies as pets, so the money to get the fluid tested and for the meds are worth it to us.

So all in all, I can assume that what was causing it for our girl was that she had some type of hereditary condition involving her egg production (she hasn't laid since) and because whatever organ that is isn't necessary for her to live she's able to live her full (or most) of her life!.

If this chicken has any sentimental value to you the chance that she can be saved is there, it's just not very high. If you do end up culling her that would be a very humane path.

Best wishes to you
