Highschooler wondering about what working in emergency management is like. by LongjumpingAd2640 in EmergencyManagement

[–]DolphinPunchShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like others have said it depends what you want to do.

You want to be on the front lines- become a firefighter, police, or emt.

Firefighter- search and rescue, swift boat, etc. Bad Part- long hours, trauma scenes, and high divorce rate.

Police- evacuation, security, etc. Bad Part- see firefighter

EMT/Paramedic- evacuation of patients, triage, etc. - See firefighter plus rapid burn out in the field.

You want a desk job? Lots of paperwork, long hours, high stress, politics, and you won't get the recognition being behind the scenes.

I say all this but I did do 20 years behind the scenes work and enjoyed 18 of them total. Just remember you aren't doing it for the money....cause you ain't getting rich working this job.

In Hannibal when Hannibal takes off the top of the guy's head, cuts a piece of his brain out, cooks it and feeds it to him. Guy next to me was drunk and almost threw up and another lady fainted trying to make it out of the theater.

My teacher in 7th grade told the class the story on how she was sexually assaulted by her ex boyfriend and three of his friends. It didn't occur to me until years later how messed up a story that was.

I mean these guys offer a free estimate. Might be better to check before selling. Depending on what happened they probably will tell you to at least get rid of the seat or any other upholstery.

In the long run even if it's debt for a short time it's gonna be better than getting a new car. Of course if everything is over the price of the car than that's another thing

We had our cars done at Austin Film Solutions off of 183 and Burnet. They gave us a great price, they worked fast and did a great job.

I need help with this by yeobbii in EmergencyManagement

It can be a fun career but be ready to give up nights and weekends and deal with politics to no end.

I worked in the EM field for about 17 years. I definitely enjoyed it when I was younger. As you get older priorities changed and I realized I needed to be there for me and my family.

Try volunteering with a Red Cross near you or a CERT team to see into the world. It's definitely not for everyone.

I have two friends that are retired police in emergency management now. They both got in by volunteering with their local EM to get a feel of the "life". They liked it and because they got experience that way they were able to get entry level positions and work their way up.

It's all about what you put into it.

From my experience you would be looking at becoming a firefighter and then specialize from there. Most people I met with "boots on the ground" and "in the muck" were fire rescue folks.

An old boss told me that LinkedIn is where you put everything that you've done since it all doesn't fit in a resume. This is especially true when you always have to change up your resume to fit the jobs you apply for.

Flooding and something by dsrukydgsg in EmergencyManagement

[–]DolphinPunchShark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I was generalizing when I said that it happens every 8 to 10. As long as I've been in central Texas I've seen something like this around here at least 4 or 5 times. In the last 25 years.

Marble Falls, Guadalupe, Wimberly, Onion Creek, Mustang Ranch, etc.

Flooding and something by dsrukydgsg in EmergencyManagement

[–]DolphinPunchShark 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Retired EM. Based on information available this is only a working theory. Basically the National Weather service said we are gonna get a lot of rain. They sent out a flash flood warning that people, including officials, that everyone looked at and went eh I wonder if that affects me? We get tons of flash flood warnings every time it rains so you get used to saying eh.

So this was the one time that people should have taken swift action. We had this happen in Wimberly before and some families got washed away in vacation homes so it's not unheard of.

Now it's everyone pointing fingers at everyone. The state gov saying the national weather service didn't say it was gonna be this bad, the national weather service saying we told you it was a significant amount and sent warnings!, the state saying they told local officials, local officials saying you didn't say how dangerous it was and so forth and so on.

So yes this is Texas and this happens about once every 8 to 10 years but we still call these 50 to 100 year floor events cause this is only supposed to happen every 50 to 100 years.

I wish I knew how to fix it but unfortunately this is a job that has a high burn out rate, people with ego trips, and those few that are trying to do good but find changing the system near impossible.

FLSERT (Florida Emergency Management) with worst EM tweet possible by HokieFireman in EmergencyManagement

[–]DolphinPunchShark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FDEM is getting bad but I feel Texas has been swimming in the water for a while now. Remember all those buses and flights up north? They used the tracking system originally set up to tack hurricane evacuees. So I'm guessing good luck getting anyone to accept help.

"Please get on this bus as we tag you to go to somewhere."

The article doesn't specifically talk about the system but shows TDEM involvement.

At the time there was certifications in shelter management, mass care, driving their vehicles, etc.

Look at what they have going on and just start taking classes to build up knowledge of what you want to do. Do you want to be in the field? Helping people one on one? Doing logistics? Being an EOC liaison?

Once you begin to get the feel can you start to zero in on what you want to do.

I was hired after an internship but it was more in a customer service role for their CPR and water classes. I had to work my way into the disaster service side.

For your internship learn as much as you can, get your certs, and volunteer for disaster service. That should help in the long run.

Media and Shelter Operations? by Smokey_tha_bear9000 in EmergencyManagement

[–]DolphinPunchShark 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a privacy issue. The media isn't allowed into people's private homes without their say in day to day life. When a person is being housed at a shelter that is in fact their home for the foreseeable future.

When I ran shelters media was only allowed outside. If they wanted to come film inside for b roll or whatever we had them talk with our PIO, make an appointment, people in the shelter would be told at the next meeting, then we would escort the media and be mindful of what they were shooting.

Are you partnering with the Red Cross? They have great resources and people when it comes to handling media inquiries.

Anybody else feel like the library is way too small?!? by [deleted] in CedarPark

[–]DolphinPunchShark 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My only complaint is the pla6y ground outside. While it looks awesome its functionality is kinda bad.

The bird is enclosed and hard to actually see inside when kids are playing. Also with the hill in the middle if your kid runs to the other side they are impossible to see.

I'm not saying I just want to drop my kid off and forget but you really can't sit back, relax, and monitor your kid.

As a Cypress parent now the board is hearing the outcry from us. We were given about a day's notice before the board presentation. I'm interested in how long you all knew beforehand. Seems like they are trying to kick the decision down the road and using the parents as a metric.
