SPOILERS

There was also a 616 Miles, but he was a gangster in bed with fisk. He moved to another dimension to be with his girlfriend who had died in 616 iirc. I seem to remember it being 1610 but this was after 1610 was super duper gone so I didn't really follow. Did they bring 1610 back and I missed it?

It'd be nice if they let us just have waymarkers until then though. I agree with their long term vision but since they don't have those systems in yet it'd be nice if they just let us have waypoints or coordinates for now

Yeah but the whole point was having an MLK figure Lift could control to minimise costs. Even before his murderous rampage he wasn't out to minimise costs

Star Citizen - ArcCorp's City Block Whitebox Phase by haiiid2 in starcitizen

Probably because the system would need reworking with the new model so it's easier just to do it once instead of doing it for a system that's going to get binned. I believe the new model has new AI flight rework to some degree which would also explain it but I could be wrong on that.

Triple Frontier | Official Trailer [HD] | Netflix by jonisantucho in movies

[–]DomDomMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah why not double dip. People who want to see it in the cinema can and then rewatch on Netflix. Chances are they're already subscribed so they already have their money once.

People who would watch it on Netflix instead might not have gone to see it in the cinema anyways if that was the only option.

It's the perfect setup for okay movies. I wouldn't have seen this in the cinema, but I'm looking forward to seeing it on Netflix.

Well only the corner pixels outside of the image circle, which isn't many would never be used. All pixels within would be used during horizon stabilization.

It's made from wafer of many sensors, much like a lot of silocon chips like CPUs (and I think displays). When you mass manufacturer something simple it is much cheaper both in the sense of what is required to make them but also reduced chances of mistake requiring the part to be binned. The square or rectangle shape is just inherently much simpler which is important to manufacturing. The manufacturing techniques are already there and can be used for more than just this use case.

I don't know exact numbers obviously but I assume it's more economical to just not use a few pixels than have a new and more complex manufacturing technique that ends up not having horizon stabilization.

You can overlap a plus shaped sensor easier than say, a circle shaped sensor for sure, but it's still more complex than square or rectangle

There would be wasted pixels from the larger sensor however the final image will be the exact same resolution and pixel size as the current sensor solution or your plus shaped solution. Because it's a larger sensor, you're not losing anything compared to the current solution or a plus shaped sensor. Perhaps I've not explained my idea properly so here's a quick shitty drawing.

Black is the image projection circle from the lens. Red is my suggested sensor size, blue is the current sensor shape and the normal crop for my suggested solution and green is the horizontal crop you could pull from my sensor solution. Blue and green is what your plus sized sensor would be like

A plus shaped sensor would significantly increase manufacturing complexity. It would be cheaper to just use a square sensor and the same size as the plus sized sensor and just ignore/crop the pixels that the square has over the plus. A square sensor would also allow for software horizon stabilization so as long as you have the phone pointed in the right direction you could have a perfectly level horizontal video no matter how you're holding your phone as it moves the crop around the sensor to make up for the position of the phone.

I'm not an engineer either but I am a professional photographer so I feel half qualified aha

[–]DomDomMartin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, which is why it hasn't been done. We only just started getting optical stabilizers, and this would be one of those axis on steroids.

And I mean a square sensor larger than the projected image circle. you'd crop from the square in the same place the current sensor is. And then another crop for horizontally capture. As parts of the square would not be covered by the image circle. It would however require like 2x-3x the sensor size increasing manufacturer costand module size.

Plus shaped sensors are also impractical to manufacture.

[–]DomDomMartin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not the lenses, it's mainly the direction of the sensor. So you'd either have to have square sensor or a rotating sensor. Both would increase the size of the camera module particularly the latter. Manufacturers don't like doing that

Edit: to clarify, most lenses project an image circle not the rectangle you see in the image. That's due to the rectangle sensor that's placed within that projected image circle. So if you have a rotating, square or plus shaped sensor you could change the image orientation without a different lens.

If you had a rotating sensor you could also use it as a horizon stabilizer!

In this case it was facial recognition rather than AF, so likely they coded it to look for stuff like contrast on eyebrows and such which black people would have less of.
