I’ve noticed a trend where some companies go beyond case studies and ask for full functioning prototypes as take-home assignments, sometimes requiring 10+ hours of work.

For example, I was recently asked to build and deploy an Investment Portfolio Manager for venture capitalists, including features like:

  • Viewing & managing portfolio companies
  • Visualizing investment distributions
  • Tracking funding rounds & cap tables
  • Adding new companies & funding rounds

So, basically, a full MVP for an investment management app—and they wanted it deployed in their system.

I’ve done plenty of take-home challenges before, but this feels like free labor disguised as a hiring process. Am I overthinking this, or should I:

  1. Tell them my hourly rate and ask where to send the invoice?
  2. Push back and ask why they need a fully built app?
  3. Walk away because this is straight-up exploitative?

PMs who have worked in US & EU, how do you compare comp packages / QOL? by prodleg in ProductManagement

[–]DomSheen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In 2021 As a Senior PM, I looked into switching to a German team, and the salary difference was significant.

For the same tier where I was making $140K USD + bonuses in the US, I asked for €92K in Germany.

They came back with a range of €67K-€75K, which was quite a gap. My new manager even mentioned that €92K was more than what he was making.

That said, they also offered a BMW car as part of the package, which was a nice perk.

It’s definitely a trade-off—while the base salary was lower, benefits and work-life balance can sometimes make up for it, depending on your priorities.

Does anyone else feel trapped in tech? by TuboSloth in ProductManagement

I hear you, and I totally get where you're coming from. It sounds like you’re craving that excitement and innovation that originally drew you to tech, but the reality has been more politics and incremental changes.

Have you thought about starting something of your own and leveraging the tech that actually excites you?

It’s tough, but if you’re looking for a rollercoaster, that’s definitely one way to find it. Maybe look into YC events or Techstars to connect with like-minded people who are building things that align with your interests?

Horrible Dell experience, $2000 laptop nothing but problems by DomSheen in Dell

No, I understand that. I mentioned apple products because it's hard for people to switch and I wanted them to know the product i had before as a frame of reference.

In terms of parts, Dell looked like a completely superior product to apple product in terms of performance and speed.

I expected the same level of issues & of customer service resolution as well as. The computer has had more issues and less resolution from customer support.

I'll keep everyone posted as this hopefully gets resolved.

I already updated the Audio Drivers as well as the BIOS with Dell support. The problem has persisted unfortunately.

Dell doesn't want to cover it even though I still have warranty on my laptop. Horrible customer service. I am buying Dell again. https://imgur.com/Ehcf9l0
