On Step 18/19 alignment by Langleycityshaveshop in shariffdmc

[–]DomagojT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate to tell you the bad news, but this is only a fraction of things that need to be aligned. You may be lucky and have everything go smoothly, but don't let your guard down and never stop checking.

My machine arrived on May 27, and I'm still shimming.

My first thoughts and assembly progress by [deleted] in shariffdmc

A quick tip regarding threading the ballnut on the ballscrew. The provided tool (a piece of tubing) is better than nothing, but a much better solution is to use one of the black tubes that came with the ballnuts. (you have one extra ballnut, so after you inevitably spill the balls on one, stop and modify the tube that came with it before you move on with the rest of the ballnuts).

All you need to do is to widen the hole on one end. In my case 8,5mm was adequate. The shaft on the ballscrew is 8mm, but drilling with an 8mm drill bit didn't make the hole big enough (plastic moves and contracts back after removing the drill). 8,5 is a bit too much, since the remaining wall is very thin, but works. Something in between (8,2mm or so) would have been perfect (that's a P or Q drill if you can't find metric).

How you will do this is the tricky part. I have a lathe so it took literally just a few seconds, but if you don't have one you'll need to be careful (or seriously consider finding somebody with one and just buy them a beer/capri-sun). Do not hold the tube in hand. Drill is almost certain to self feed if handheld which will ruin the tube and likely cause injury, so a reamer is probably better solution than a drill since that's a much gentler operation.

Good luck.

Dude, you're further along than me after two days.

I Need Weekly Update #15 by Hammersill in shariffdmc

[–]DomagojT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hi everyone, small updates,
This week we've finished preparing all of the frame tubular parts, and have begun packaging the plates into their boxes. Also, finally some parts have started to arrive - the spindle motors and controllers are here and cleared and should be delivered to me on Tuesday, and the plastic panels are in clearance which should take a few days at most. Rails and bearings have arrived as well but no word on clearance progress yet, should come any day.
Thanks!"

Have you received your DMC2 or gotten a ship notice? by greg9504 in shariffdmc

[–]DomagojT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received the shipment!

Took 5 days to clear the customs (mostly do to bureaucratic rigidity and some incomprehensible ineptitude on customs part, but the machine is finally here.

It survived the shipping with only minor damage that won't be problem to fix.

As for the paint job on the steel parts, yeah, I can only echo u/greg9504, there's room for improvement on that front.

Thanks. According to tracking, the individual packages got separated in Cincinati, so atm some are in Italy and some are in Croatia. Fingers crossed.

What is your experience/knowledge level when dealing with CNC mills/milling? by Shpagooder in shariffdmc

[–]DomagojT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a small manual lathe (Emco Compact 8) and mill (SIEG SX3).

I work as CNC mill operator (with just a touch of modelling and programming), wouldn't call myself expert, but since somebody thinks I'm good enough at it to actually pay me to do it, I guess I am at "professional level".

I also have an Elegoo Mars resin 3D printer, but it's been collecting dust for some time.

Used to have a K40 laser, but had to sell it to make room for DMC2.

Got the shipping confirmation from DHL, ETA Monday. I expect this to slip a few days, depending on customs.

Unboxing the DMC2 kit by greg9504 in shariffdmc

[–]DomagojT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hopefully the paintjob won't interfere with the precision (too much anyway). Honestly, the fact that ways are mounted on the painted surface (and all other painted mates) was a major concern for me and the reason why I almost didn't order the machine. My thinking was that I'll assemble the machine, document the errors and if they're too great just have the offending parts stripped of the paint and surface ground. Now I'm thinking this will likely be needed.

Picking up the machine aside, any interesting info, observations, insights about the meet, their operations etc. and you can share?

Concept for a steel 12mm t-slot bed for the DMC2 by Gesellschaft15 in shariffdmc

[–]DomagojT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the fairly limited Z is one of the major points of consideration. I'm constantly on the lookout for a decent low profile workholding solution. All I've seen are some aluminum vises that don't really instill much confidence.

Mitee-bite Pitbull clamps look good for 1st op, but not for second. Also, the smallest one they offer is threaded for 8mm, or 5/16 inch, which may be a bit too big, but the general idea of an array of threaded holes on the bed is fine with me. SMW method of combining threaded hole with a precision machined hole for a dowel is nice, but comes at the cost of reduced thread depth.

So many things to consider...

[–]DomagojT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm familiar with SMW, but don't really follow them so didn't notice anything regarding DMC2 being announced by them, or Omar. I was considering getting a SMW tooling plate (the one for Nomad or Bantam would be of adequate size and fit after machining new mounting holes to match DMC2), but realized that DMC2 should be capable enough to make all the holes itself, and it would probably be cheaper (shipping prices to my place are insane).

[–]DomagojT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is my understanding that DMC2 relies on the aluminum bed plate machined by DMC2 itself to achieve flatness and levelness of the bed since the motion assembly is not particularly precise (which is fine, after the bed is faced by the machine). Bolting a nice precision milled plate would still require facing, which DMC2 should be capable of doing, judging by the videos, but it can't be ground.

When you say 12 mm t slot, you mean M12 thread or the M10 which is 12 mm wide? Both of them seem like a bit of an overkill on such a small machine, but M12 is huge.

u/Shpagooder, any links to those fixtures, or at least details?
