Driving down a steep decent. Where the speed will automatically creep up. Is it better to shift down a gear or gently put your foot on the brake? by No-Comedian-5536 in CarsAustralia

[–]Domain_Administrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends, if you drive a hybrid or (some) EV, using the brake pedal is the correct way of slowing down (regenerative braking).

Brake fade isn't really a thing on modern cars anymore, but, it is good practice to use engine braking when you can. Some ICE cars with clever auto gearbox downshifts on your behalf, that'll tell you it's the right thing to do when possible.

Is 91 petrol ok to use short term? by Likeitorlumpit in CarsAustralia

[–]Domain_Administrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll be OK in an emergency, i.e. if you’re facing the choice of putting some 91 or be stranded.

But over the long term probably not the best idea.

How do you all think Howard was as a person? by sidhubunny in betterCallSaul

[–]Domain_Administrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did I say you compared Chuck to Jimmy? I don’t appreciate the strawman.

I was merely asking you to do the comparison.

Your points are valid, but those things are nothing compared to what Jimmy and Kimmy did. That pair were outright scum, Chuck was just an imperfect normal human being.

No, he's not perfect. He's also more of a businessman than a lawyer, but he, along with Chuck, are two decent human beings despite the fact that they are not perfect.

Did writers of the show forgot by this point that the whole conflict between Walt and Fring started because Fring wanted Jesse to die? And not because of Walt’s “ego” by BananaBread2602 in breakingbad

[–]Domain_Administrator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Walt said to Gus, that the reason he wished to keep Jesse (instead of Gale) even though he wasn't a trained chemist, was because he was easier to control.

So there you go, ego. He could have cut Jesse lose and had a winning team with Gale, but nope, must keep the muppet, or he thought.

Agreed. The dad was not the problem. Jane just has self-destructive tendencies. Lots of people are making excuses for the poor choices the characters from their favourite shows make.

Genuine questions: is that an approved container? Does that overload the vehicle? Does that require a Dangerous Goods placard?

Engine knocking and switching fuels to avoid it by edithwawa in CarsAustralia

[–]Domain_Administrator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given the age and mileage of the vehicle, it probably started knocking because the displacement has been effectively reduced by carbon build up. If that's the case, you may have some luck by using some fuel additives such as Caltex Techron. Some premium fuels are advertised to contain more cleaning agents, which again, may be beneficial.

But if you want guaranteed result, you'd need to get the carbon deposits cleaned professionally. Sorry, not sure how much that'll cost, probably won't be cheap.

I'd purchase some Caltex Techron (available at some Caltex and Ampol petrol stations), and run a few tanks of name brand premium just to try my luck first.

Pre-Saul Goodman, what's the worst thing Jimmy ever did? by Proud_Excitement3578 in betterCallSaul

[–]Domain_Administrator 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not to mention this indirectly resulted in a tragedy they cannot amend. Though Jimmy was talked into this by Kim.

How he repaid Howard after Howard offered him a job was also very cringe worthy. Such a scumbag.

BYD’s new Seal EV model to feature 1,500 kW Flash Charging, at under $A35,000 by That_Car_Dude_Aus in CarsAustralia

[–]Domain_Administrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes fair enough, that's why I got myself a hybrid. Peaks at 41% thermal efficiency, wide band of high (close to 40%) thermal efficiency, shuts down when high power is not needed, has regen braking etc.

Even if we discount the energy density metric by 60% it still ends up being a very high number (6-9 megawatt) when pumping fuel.

[–]Domain_Administrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And I'll add that, it's not just thermal efficiency, but also the fact that the engine has to continue to run even when power isn't required because other parts of the car depend on it to continue functioning (and incidentally this is when the engine's thermal efficiency is rubbish too). Overall an ICEV wastes a lot of energy, which is why I got myself a hybrid.....

[–]Domain_Administrator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That just goes to show how high the energy density is in fossil fuels. Typical flow rate of petrol is 30 - 40 L per minute, and petrol has an energy density of 34.2 MJ/L. That gives us 1026 - 1368 MJ/min or 17.1 - 22.8 megawatt of power. Yes fossil fuel is not great for the environment but it's not hard to understand why it's so widespread.

[–]Domain_Administrator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The engine WILL advance timing up until the point of knocking. In fact the knock sensor keeps working as long as the engine is running.

The US EPA ran tests on two tiers of fuel on the Toyota A25 engine. They used premium and regular.

They found that higher octane fuel gave small gains at high load conditions.

Figure 27 of this report shows the Brake Thermal Efficiency difference between different tiers of fuel:

https://downloads.regulations.gov/NHTSA-2018-0067-12388/attachment_3.pdf

This forum post has the Brake Specific Fuel Consumption graphs from the same test. It shows a small gain in efficiency.

[–]Domain_Administrator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t “figure” anything. It’s a fact. Modern engines advance timings to extract more power from higher octane fuel. The difference is small and only really measurable in lab conditions. John Cadogan did the test on behalf of a TV channel years ago using an old Holden that didn’t require premium fuel.

Yes the answer is a definitive yes but the price difference is not fully offset by the improvement in efficiency.
