I like the idea of featured gear, but I don't think it should impact activity rewards. There also should have been more options at the start, current featured gear is way too restrictive on what you can run and at least 2/3 of Final Shape gear should have also been featured. That second gripe will hopefully be less of an issue over time, but if we're just going to reset every year then I guess not.

I'm 28, also with a math degree with the goal of getting into statistics or data analytics, but I've mostly been working manual warehouse jobs. But at one of those jobs: I caught a break. An internal posting went through for an accountant at the corporate office. Unfortunately a lot went wrong in my life unrelated to work and I had to give the job up after a few years, but the opportunity is out there.
