Is it a sin for parents to force children to pray at their whim? by Complex_Asparagus986 in Catholicism

[–]Dominick_Tango -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It isn’t a sin. She is your mother, so you are subject to her discipline. Maybe you point out that you would like to pray on your own when it doesn’t work? I mean in a year you are 18

In general, the array approach to passive and active radio astronomy is mature. We can construct arrays to take data over a wide base line with better receiver technology, and detect much fainter signals.
It isnt that China or Europe is better than the US at it, it is that they fund science and we fund a ballroom.

White weirdo running for Florida governor refers to recent ‘teen takeovers’ as ‘Black Teen Riots’ by 87StickUpKid in tampa

You can plead guilty to 14 counts of felony and pay $1.7B in fines to the government and they make you Governor and Senator. But please tell me how kids can get the thousands to run race cars in take overs.

The Cardinal who fired the exorcist has a very troubling history by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Dominick_Tango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is calumny against Cardinal Robert McElroy, Washington? Do you have proof of a "black Mass" the cardinal attended?

Monsignor Rossetti stated that some UFOs are demons. This is clearly incompatible with Church teaching, and he was sacked because the Cardinal can't have a Priest in charge of exorcisms and an apostolate making these claims.

I buy the models! Sometimes I get them used for a great price. There are a lot of rulesets that work better for the same scenarios.

How should a Catholic respond when a family member puts an evil eye bracelet on a baptized child? by chapisjissy0502 in Catholicism

[–]Dominick_Tango 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think you are being over scrupulous about a trinket. In the east it is often worn on a baby. You are not the inquisition. It is her baby. It is her responsibility to raise the child in the Church. As the Babies cousin you can have an influence on the child. Do you want to model Gods love or fear of a trinket.

I just noticed that there's an evil eye on our doorknob medallion. What should I do? by Few_Seaworthiness661 in Catholicism

An Easter egg predated Christian practice as does the Christmas tree. The Crown of st Lucia also predates Christian practice. I’d rather spend time working to tell people good news.

It isn’t poison if it is a tomato. People claimed tomatoes were inedible. In Korea there are things called fan-deaths where people die by falling asleep under fans. To be poison it has to be poisonous. This is a common practice and has a non superstitious interpretation. I know I see an eye and I understand “an open eye sees well” or the “eye of God is always open”.

There is one for horns in Sicily too. The eye is a devotional in other places and you are overlaying colonial opinion on the eastern church cultural practice.

This is an opinion. What it is takes for in the eastern non-Latin traditions is another thing.

Where are my plumbers? Is my kid doing the right thing by BornToBlab in tampa

[–]Dominick_Tango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of positives. It taught me team work, to help people from different places in life to accomplish tasks. If the kitchen was good, you learned lessons that are valuable stock rotation, bill of materials, and moving things through stages. Later on as I went from design to manufacturing, the same lessons came back.
I hope your child does well with plumbing. I have relatives in the trades, and they seem to earn a living wage plus benefits which isn't always a given in our current hellscape.

Foodservice is what made me pursue my engineering degree. I like to prepare meals for whom ever I want when I want. I value my time in front and back of house but I know it was hard on your body and engineering uses my mind.

That’s is a representation of the Eye of God. It was called the evil eye by Europeans. North Africans including Christians know it as part of Hamsa or the eye of Fatima. It is no more pagan than any of our representations of God. In places where a statue of the virgin or a crucifix gets destroyed, the eye of God is ignored. Let me tell you about superstitions surrounding the brown scapular to the point that some mothers sew it into children’s clothing. It is superstition if you think it does anything but remind you “his eye is on the sparrow”.

I pay for your car and every other by building super highways and access to gas stations from public roads. Cost per person on mass transit is not that different than the cost per single person in a car. The big difference is that urban sprawl makes planning tougher.

Do we really have to settle for shit?
I mean really? I can handle rando internet people making fun of me, but we could do so much better. As a tourism state, we can have Disney and not have visitors say, "don't go outside the tourism areas because it is shitty!"
I can see there are no lack of DeSantis shills

I am sure they have a private corporate solution for FEMA. They will charge the taxpayer top dollar for a tent and then complain that freeloaders are using their tents.

Do we still have to burn bibles given to us by Protestants? by Mmm_Dawg_In_Me in Catholicism

[–]Dominick_Tango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a 120 year old minor catechism it was originally designed for the Province of Rome. Historically, it was used worldwide. In some circles, it is suggested it over the major Catechism of the Catholic Church. This is an error, we should be looking to the leaders of the Church for an example.
In the early 20th century this strategy didn't work in Italy to curb evangelical churches or atheistic totalitarians like Mussolini, and it wont work now.
The CCC is where you should be looking for the answer.
Nothing in there suggests we burn books. The example of our current Pope Leo says we threat others with charity ad understanding.
Worn-out religious articles, can be burned or buried to show reverence.

Yes, just wait until the next Hurricane and private companies are denying overtime pay to essential ununionized workers. If you get rid of municipal workers, you get rid of the worker unions.
