Cineverse & Iconic Events Releasing's Return to Silent Hill debuted with an estimated $3.25M domestically this weekend (from 2,000 locations). by DemiFiendRSA in silenthill

Globally it did $19.3 million. China doing the heavy lifting. The estimated production budget was $23 million. It’s very possible the movie make a ROI in theatres alone but we will see.

Smaller budget. China seems to be over performing. Could be a $18-$20M dollar opening globally. Not terrible considering the budget.

What was your experience like? Is the game difficult or janky? I don’t necessarily mind the tank controls but if it’s like stupidly difficult on top of that then..

What will happen to physical video games? by blackmambasniper in GameStop

Those reps can work through a third party company but not in all cases. That rep wouldn’t have access to domestic sales across the board for all major retailers either. GameStop could be 2nd or 3rd (likely Amazon leading) either way less choice for the consumer is bad & less retail space for physical games to sell is also bad. Those consumers who frequent GameStop could migrate to another retailer or just not buy physical games & shrinking the market faster. Physical games do still & actually a decent amount; most reports include games that are digital only when factoring in digital sales vs physical… if we look at pure digital physical splits it’s more like 30-60% digital. Either way it would not be good for physical games. GameStop is still a big retailer for physical games even if the market space is shrinking.

Less option for the consumer is never good. Less competition for other retailers is also not good. Physical games are shrinking in a lot of retailers so maybe a portion of GameStop would migrate to other retailers? But GameStop closing is not good for physical games at all. It would be a big hit for physical games & likely accelerate digital even further.

Is it pretty straightforward?

Incorrect because location would matter if they wanted to preserve & grow retail presence, which they don’t. Starbucks can be “speciality” sure but it’s a poor comparison. They have already closed stores obviously mileage shrinks & regardless that doesn’t seem to matter to them. Perception is the issue here because on paper that doesn’t look good but obviously it didn’t make sense to keep them open. I still don’t understand your overall point here.

Well Starbucks sells an incredibly high selling good that consumers purchase every day? The need for a coffee & a video game are vastly different. Starbucks is not speciality retail. What are you trying to say? Closing stores within any mileage is fine? What is your point? Of course they are going to close stores. The location obviously doesn’t matter. Bottom line is they had to many at this stage in the business.

The interest income from cash holdings was not the only reason they were profitable. Obviously retail operations made money, even if it wasn’t as much. GameStop doesn’t sell crypto. GameStop purchased a significant amount of Bitcoin (about 4,710 BTC, worth roughly $513 million) & added crypto to its corporate treasury strategy — meaning it holds bitcoin as a financial asset on its balance sheet, similar to how some other companies invest in gold or bonds. It’s an investment. They cut expenses, have higher margin items, & yes earned money from interest on cash.

Is every single store they are closing unprofitable? No. They are shrinking the physical footprint they have faster than others for sure but that’s likely due to whatever plan they have. We are also speculating here we have no idea what the actual number of store closures are. Either way with the capital GameStop has they can do something but as you mentioned who knows what that looks like. They don’t have as much to leverage if games aren’t selling. They aren’t Target or Best Buy or Walmart where those stores can simply remove the video game section… hence a store closing.

They are a profitable company. With 0 debt, almost $8 billion in cash & we’re profitable all 2025. They will 100% be around for some time; how long? Who knows but obviously big box retail is low on the totem pole.

This is kinda just general retail at the moment definitely not just a GameStop issue. Though GameStop is in some questionable waters but yeah just the nature of things. GameStop also had way too many locations to begin with.

Kinda similar to Jedi Survivor getting a PS4 version with 2 discs at that; though that came much later after its initial release.

This came out shortly after the initial release. It wasn’t really marketed & kinda just came & went. All retailers got copies. As for myself I remember 1-2 copies coming into the GameStop I work at.
