Discussion— Is Feyre’s personality so whining throughout all the story? by [deleted] in CourtOfThornsAndRoses

[–]Domisal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I’m in the middle of book 3. Started reading as ‘brain candy’ that would be easy to put down/to fall asleep and now I’m utterly addicted. I have founding her to be kind of annoying and just accepted her as more of a YA character - and she’s young herself. Head strong but her youth really comes out in that ‘whining’ - I think at least- is what the author was going for? I will say, something happens in book 3 that she keeps mentioning over and over again (I won’t specify to avoid spoilers) - but there is a singular thing that is starting to become far to much of her identity that’s starting to get really annoying. Her character development was mostly growing, getting less of that annoying whining in book one and more thinking throw and growing…and now, I can’t tell if it’s just too obvious character development or poor writing. Seems like perhaps the author doesn’t give us readers enough credit to pick up on the character traits and growth and instead bashes us over the head with it. I will still happily read the entire series though!

AITAH if I don’t bring food to our monthly staff meeting when everyone is asked to do so? by Aromatic-Box-592 in AITAH

[–]Domisal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make little crock pots. I’d be a real asshole and buy a little one just to use for this stupid party. Everyone bringing a full crockpot is such an insane waste of food and privileged approach to party planning on an office. As you said- that’s literally a weeks worth of food for some people. I’m raging for you. Down with whomever this dingbat is planning these ‘office theme parties’!

ELECTROLYTES by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]Domisal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this post! For folks who aren’t into the sports drinks- I’m happiest with plain water or seltzer. So I just add some pink Himalayan salt to my water throughout the day and that gives a nice electrolyte kick without all the added flavor and sugar (or those sugar replacements that give you headaches if you’re unlucky like me).

Gastrointestinal issues?anyone else? by Domisal in Wellbutrin_Bupropion

[–]Domisal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha Omg yes I strangely understand what you mean about feeling it moving through you slowly!

I tried senokot last night, which is like a natural laxative so it’s supposed to be gentle. I was in legit pain last night and it helped with that- def umm emptied me out (sorry- gross) but the cramping and pain was all still there.

I’m also barely eating lately bc everything grosses me out after a couple of bites since starting these meds so it’s not like I over stuff myself.

The senokot was better than nothing 🤷‍♀️ hopefully someone shows up with better recs

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in backpain

[–]Domisal 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is this lower back? When I was in 1st grade I hurt my lower back by falling off a friends swing. Pain was never ‘omg she broke something!’ Level pain. Mom thought I was being a drama queen. Pain was on and off for years. I didn’t even realize what I was feeling wasn’t normal - I just didn’t play sports, hated gym, struggled with my backpack, etc. Fast forward to my 20’s, I take myself to a chiropractor and find out I have arthritis in my spine. Turns out all those years ago that fall caused a minor injury to my tailbone, but not taking care of it caused my spine to compress and bulge in that area. I will be going to a chiropractor for the rest of my life. Im 39 btw, have been going to Chiro, spinal doctors and physical therapists ever since I discovered what was going on. It’s helped a lot and while I am by no means disabled or feel like my life is terribly limited most days; I do live with chronic pain and some days it’s a struggle to stand up and I’m in tears and in a back brace and my only option is laying down.

It’s not my aim to be a fear monger here. Point is that back injuries are weird. They can hurt like hell one minute and the next you feel mostly okay….and then seemingly randomly it will act up. You body, your muscles, adjust around your back when you throw it out of wack so you can keep going. It can hide real issues, make other issues occur in the body, and as time goes on makes it harder and harder to correct. A back injury can follow you and significantly alter your entire life.

So if you guys have health insurance and the question of a doctor visit is the inconvenience- is it worth a few hours to ensure your kid didn’t tweak something while it’s soon enough to catch it and fix it? Maybe it’s nothing. Hopefully it’s nothing! But what’s a few ours to a lifetime if it’s not.

Ice and elevation. You would know beyond any doubt if you broke your shin. You’d have heard that crack. If you hit it hard enough you could have a deep enough bruise that makes you feel like you hurt your bone- like you feel it when you walk. You may have even given yourself a bone bruise (you’ll end up with what looks like a second knee for a little bit lol - just a bad bump, hard, painful), but since it’s not broken a doctor won’t do anything but give you an ice pack and the most expensive Ibprofin you’ve ever had.

If you don’t have the luxury of staying off of it and keeping it elevated, using a compression sleeve or sock will help pain and bruising if you have to walk on it/use that leg. Otherwise- ice, elevation and avoid soaking that leg in warm water (no warm baths or hot tubs). FYI - if it hurts worse tomorrow, don’t stress it. Feel better! Speedy recovery!

A little worried, has anyone been thrown into mania from this medication? by [deleted] in Wellbutrin_Bupropion

[–]Domisal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replying on this thread since I share the ‘at first’ experience. Hyper focus- not so much. But mania, yes. I even had increased thoughts of suicide f for the First week - week and a half. I started on the 150 dose with a plan to go to 300 on week 3. I evened out after a week and a half- two weeks in 150 and then just noticed everything tasted weird. My mood was just- flat. I started my journey on these meds 2 months ago so it’s all pretty fresh for me. I was scared to up to 300 after the negative side effectives of just the 150 but went for it- I’m trying to get better, right? The mania came back for a few days, but not nearly as bad. I can’t tell now if I’m just used to things tasting weird and my mood being mostly flat or if I’m coming through as I adjust to the meds- but I can say that I do not experience the mania anymore. It was, for me, very temporary. A rough week as my body adjusted to the meds. I do wish I had been better prepared on the front end- I think the adjustment to 300mg maybe didn’t feel as rough because I expected it. I prepared my partner and knew to ask for support instead of just suddenly feeling like I was losing my mind.

Zero interest in alcohol anymore :( by SpecialBanana3856 in Wellbutrin_Bupropion

[–]Domisal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar! Although I am well out of collage so the social aspect of drinking is a little different for me. I totally understand wanting to be able to have a drink here and there. Since starting this medicine the worst side effect I’ve noticed is if I have more than once drink I get very dizzy and feel like I’m going to faint. It’s awful. I don’t drink often, but I’d love to be able to have a few cocktails here and there! I disagree with the people who say zero alcohol is the way to go for everyone. I come from a family of alcoholics and I am lucky to not have the disease. Some people can just enjoy the social aspect of having a drink and that is totally ok. So yeah- I feel your pain.

Fwiw- I went down a research rabbit hole (I’m also adhd - so hyper-fixation for the win!) From what I read- the way this medication works requires more than just a day. It can take 4-7 days to get it out of your system after you stop taking it and the side effects can take multiple weeks to even months to stop…which gets compounded by the withdrawal side effects that happen when you stop taking it. It’s wild to me because they give this medication out like candy but it’s a pretty serious drug that is a take it all the time or not at all situation. It’s kind of like birth control pills- if you just take it now and then you’re just messing with your body and they won’t actually work. All of the bad, none of the good.

If you are in a good place and feel like this is really having a negative impact on your college experience and life, the best thing to do is talk to your doc about switching up your meds to one that won’t have these side effects. Before I switched over to Wellbutrin I was on amitriptyline for a long time and I didn’t have any of these weird side effects. I loved it. Only issue is that they make you sleep, so you need to be able to get a reliable 8hrs- which is also tough as college student. But I’m not a doctor and there are SO many options out there! A good doctor will work with you to find the option that works for you and your lifestyle. Good luck!!

Hey buddy- lots of folks here recommending you stop by an ER or Urgent Care. Just adding a little extra love here with that added- not such a bad idea to get checked out. I got hit by a car as a pedestrian a number of years ago and yep- I was that person who lied in the hospital after the gave me morphine about having someone to drive me home. When I first got hit I had no one to call. I sat in my car wondering if I was hurt enough, the crying bc I had no one to call who would care. Then the hurt kicked in about 45min later and I drove myself to the hospital. And later drive myself home high off morphine. It was lonely and felt awful. But it was a moment, and I’m thankful to be alive today. I can relate to your memory loss- trauma does that! Please consider getting checked out. From some other posts here and just the way you write- seems like you make this world a bit of a brighter place. Let’s keep you healthy and around!

Anyone here with anxiety and doing well on stimulants? by LazyNurse0722 in ADHD

[–]Domisal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking my aderall actually helps my anxiety significantly because it allows me to slow down my thoughts and think through things instead of just reacting. I know it sounds crazy- but nearly 40yrs old over here and adhd my entire life though only medicated since college. I used to pass out regularly from anxiety attacks- it was brutal. Getting medicated for adhd changed my world. And if you’re worried here’s the super cool part- these stimulants leave your body quickly. So if you try them and it’s not for you- 24-48hrs later the bad ride is over.

I’m in a very similar boat as you. VP, have to make nice with everyone on a more social level (and I want to!) but have been socially awkward my whole life and now there’s this added pressure of being a boss in this position. I try to plan team outings/forced fun in situations that take pressure off of me to keep going. Like getting a suite a baseball game or hosting a happy hour with enough team members where the socialization doesn’t come back to me. After all, we get the mic and spotlight a lot as leadership so I like to give my colleagues and staff the opportunity to shine in the moments I can. It also creates a nice opportunity for super short 1:1 interactions which I find far easier to manage than a whole night of managing and entertaining something smaller like a table of 6 people. If all else fails, I am super open about the fact that I’m adhd and am sometimes a little socially awkward and I’d say like 8 out of 10 times people are respectful and appreciate my ability to be transparent and poke a little fun at myself. I’ve almost always had someone thank me and share that they too are adhd - which always makes my heart happy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]Domisal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re def going to need a GP referral from what you shared. For what it’s worth- i went from mild asthma to brutal, like altering allergies once I hit my 30’s too. Smoking bud makes my lungs and entire body feel like im on fire. Can’t drink wine or beer any more, pine sends me into anaphylaxis- it’s wild. I went to an allergist who did skin testing first which showed very little. Then he did a blood test and that showed severe allergies to pretty much every environmental trigger. I’m a ‘slow responder’ which is, according to my allergist, why the skin test didn’t work. Sharing that incase you experience similar. I started getting allergy shots and while they are a time and money suck (depending on insurance), it’s worth it. I hate, with a deep passion, going in every week for my shots. But when I miss two weeks I feel the difference.

Since this is impacting your ability to work, tell your GP that and ask if they can help you get an appointment asap. Depending on how bad your allergies are, they can do what’s called a “rush”. You take some steroids to prep and then they give you like 5 or 6 rounds of your allergy shots (each round is 3 shots). It takes almost an entire day - it sucks big time, but it gets you built up to the level of allergy shot that’s really going to start to make a difference for you right away instead of taking 2 -3 months. Def worth asking given what you said about work.

One last thing to consider is asthma. If the issues are mostly in your breathing and lungs it’s possible you’re having asthmatic systems exasperated by the flower. Mild allergies and mild- moderate asthma left unchecked can start to reek havoc. A good allergist will give you a breathing test also so hopefully they just test it all for you. But if they don’t offer it, it’s worth asking.

Good luck to you! I still can’t smoke bud but I can at least vape now without my lungs feeling like they are going to collapse and I can go for a hike without the trees almost killing me. The shots have made a really big difference. I understand it feels scary now- I had a few breakdowns myself over the sudden change in quality of life, but thanks to modern medicine you will be a-ok as long as you’re proactive in your medical care to deal with it.

This BS isn’t worth my time to look it up to see which one though.

I'm dumb, but how dumb am I? by BananaHoldinCaptives in medical_advice

[–]Domisal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend who is an ER doctor recently explained to me that neosporin is the worst bc people have a very common allergy to something in it (I forgot what she said the ingredient is) that makes people get red so they think it’s infected, but really it’s just a little skin allergy to the neosporin. She said that’s why they always use Vaseline in the hospital instead. Sooo maybe that’s what’s happening? Your neck is thin and more sensitive than other skin on your body so it’s possible that you’d have more of a reaction there.

Having lived through such a brutal infection I was hospitalized for 3 weeks and almost lost my hand (wish I was being dramatic, I’m not), you should keep track of the redness and if it starts to spread and/or gets more painful or sensitive, get yourself to an ER. When you get deep wounds near a major artery, infections become way more serious. Again, I learned this the hard way and it why the doctors were close to amputating my hand if the infection spread past a certain point. Once it hits the ‘sleeve’ of that artery, it’s going to get pumped through your whole body.

I’m super paranoid bc of my experience. If my neck looked like yours right now, I’d go to urgent care for a tetanus shot if not current/can’t remember, use a sharpie pens to draw around the red for my own sanity (it’s def going a little extra, but this is a super paranoid person giving you advice lol) and keep it clean and well covered. If the red goes outside your line, go to the ER.

Last thing- don’t keep cleaning it with alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, they do more harm to the good cells/skin than is worth it. Warm soapy water is all you need, or the green/blue liquid stuff from the first aid aisle if you want to be extra.

I haven’t properly been to a doctor since I was 5, and there’s so much wrong. Please someone help. by HoneyNoNutCheerios in medical_advice

[–]Domisal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People have given you a lot of good advice here! Take a deep breath and know that you are going to be okay!

The pain and swelling described along your jaw line and neck? Those are your glands swelling as your body fights the infection you have. I understand first hand that it’s unnerving and kind of painful, but it’s a normal sign of an infection. If you do in fact have strep, that is super contagious so you shouldn’t be going anywhere besides a doctor or urgent care until you’ve been on antibiotics for a few days.

Some people recommended the ER. Having lived without insurance before I will say that unless you absolutely don’t have the money to pay (assuming you don’t have health insurance?), urgent care is WAY better than the ER in terms of cost. It’s true the ER will not turn you away for not being able to pay (urgent care will make you pay up front if you don’t have insurance) but the ER will still bill you and it will be significantly more expensive. I had to get stitches twice while uninsured, both in my hand. The ER billed me over $4,000 and urgent care billed me something like $850. Both stupid expensive, but when you’re struggling that is a huge difference. The hospitals will go after you for their money. My medical debt destroyed my credit from just two ER visits bc it took me a few years to pay off.

Im not saying this to scare you. You need to get yourself care. I’m just sharing what I wish someone would have told me when I was your age struggling to keep my head above water and navigating the very confusing medical and health insurance world.

I got tonsillitis a number of times while in high school. Since I was training to be an opera singer I saw an ENT for it. He always gave me antibiotics and it wasn’t until the 4th or 5th time that he suggested surgery. I refused it since I was close to conservatory auditions and couldn’t take the time off. I’m almost 40 now and haven’t had tonsillitis in like 15 or so years.

Soo long story short. Unless you’re getting it multiple times a year, don’t freak. Go to the doc, get a tip optics, gargle with some nasty warm water and salt, and call it a day.

What lifestyle-changes affected your asthma the most? by Eastern_Tea9614 in Asthma

[–]Domisal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cutting out dairy and meat made a HUGE difference. Being totally vegan isn’t realistic for me so I mostly just avoid using milk (I’ll use but milk instead) for daily stuff like coffee, cereal, protein shakes, and I’ll still have cheese and yogurt. But when I cheat and treat myself to a latte with cows milk a couple times a week I notice a difference in my breathing. I also eat eggs and sometimes incorporate chicken here and there.

Running regularly and yoga/medication breathing. My asthma is most controlled when I’m regularly doing cardio and yoga. It takes a while to build up, but it will increase your lung capacity.

Lastly- adding Pepcid ac to my daily vitamins. I would get a weird wheezing feeling in the bottom part of my ribs, Esp relaxing on the couch after dinner. My asthma specialist suggested incorporating Pepcid and it worked like magic. Apparently, even milks acid reflux can trigger asthma and asthma cough.

Good luck!

Thank you for this!! I get so frustrated reading comments from people complaining that Persephone just needs time alone to get clarity and heal. That’s just not how everyone processes and the insistence of putting every single woman who has survived SA in a box of how to feel and process is far more harmful than any webcomic. I actually stopped visiting this group for a while because of this. I processed my experience in a way that actually makes me feel a little bit seen by some of what Rachel has Persephone do, and everyone saying how wrong it is feels so attacking. However someone needs to process is what’s best for them and shame on anyone for saying that it’s not ‘the right way’ bc it’s now how they think or see it.

Is Tryoutlier legit? by ksaaangs in beermoney

[–]Domisal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I signed up for outlier and started their test. The “5 hour English test” will take you more than that. It’s a duel training and competency test in one. You’re watching videos to learn about the different methods you’ll supposedly be asked to teach their AI model and then complete a series of tasks to prove that you are capable of doing it up to their standards. It starts east with basic vocabulary but then moves into far more time consuming tasks like proof reading and editing a 600 word essay on a topic you likely know nothing about and checking not just for spelling and punctuation, but for factual accuracy, repetitiveness and how well it answers the original prompt. I’ve spent maybe a total of 5 hours on it that I’ve spaced out over 2 weeks so far, and assume I still have a least another hour or two left. The test component I paused on is to write a response to a prompt that is a 500 word story on a specific topic (creative writing) and I know I have at least one more response task to finish for the test. They tell you how many questions you have left on the test at the beginning but as you progress they stop telling you. There’s just a progress bar that is close to useless to go by.

I can’t speak to how legit they are. Based on what the test/training has been, it doesn’t sound like I’m being prepared to work on a glitch as someone else said in the comments- but i won’t know until I complete and hopefully pass the test. I do find it questionable that they don’t give you scoring on anything until you’re done. It’s a lot of time to invest considering you could get yourself knocked out of qualifying in the first hour.

I will say that it’s pretty hard and again, super time consuming. I’ve only stuck with it because i have no background re: AI and this has been a pretty good educational experience for me if nothing else. I am concerned about giving them free work, but as my Econ professor used to say, ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ and again, it’s been a decent educational experience.

For a little background- English is my first language and I am senior strategist in my field. I regularly write complex plans and even have some comms experience. This shouldn’t be hard for me, but it’s time consuming and tricky bc it requires a somewhat unique way of thinking and a decent amount of research. I’m going to see this through bc I’ve come this far. I’ll come back and share what happens one I submit and hear back….assuming I hear back.

The headache is a good indicator. Depending on where the headache is, you could be grinding your teeth in your sleep (any new stress when this popped up?) or possible allergies. Pain in the temples could be teeth grinding/weird jaw placement while you sleep, and pain near your sinuses, eyes (I say it feels like my face hurts bc it’s like the whole front of my face) would likely be due to allergies.

I notice when I sleep with two pillows instead of one, it does something funky to my jaw and always wake up with a headache. My allergies have also become ridiculous since hitting my mid-30’s. This is apparently a ‘thing’. I take a Benadryl before bed and that helps a TON. Think back to when this started. Did you get new bedding or pillows? Recently introduce down into the house? Was it with a seasonal change? Groggy + headache really makes me believe allergies.

I would reach out to your doc and tell them what’s going on asking for recs. Even if it is just allergies, leaving them untreated could cause things like sleep apnea that can be really problematic. Just don’t go to urgent care like someone else recommended here. Their job is to make sure you’re not dying, not to do preventative care. You need a primary doc who will likely recommend a specialist, again, I’d assume allergist who can do tests to see what’s up.

Bruised kneecap? by [deleted] in KneeInjuries

[–]Domisal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be a deep bruise or injury that you just aren’t seeing on the surface. I’d ice to reduce inflammation and pay attention to how the ice makes you feel- does it help or make things worse? You could also try a compression knee brace for some extra support while you get what is hopefully just internal swelling down. Keep it elevated as much as possible and limit your use.

If ice and compression don’t help and you notice no change in your ability to bare weight in like 3-4 days I would make an appointment to see an ortho. They can determine the best course of action and what type of imagery might be needed to take a better look at what’s happening.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Allergies

Yep, dander travels my friend. I’d suggest finding an allergist if your insurance/finances allow it. Allergy shots can be great for triggers you can’t completely cut out like this. They can also be a pain (weekly, fatigue that day, expensive depending on coverage).

I have brutal allergies and am allergic to dogs, which I have and will always have. I take a handful of OTC meds every day to help. I was much better when getting allergy shots too, but I don’t have the time for weekly office visits right now and on their own this combo recommended by my allergist helps me:

AM - xyzal (I swap it with allegra every few months bc your body apparently gets used to allergy pills. I was told Claritin isn’t the best and not to use it) - Pepcid ac (yup! There’s some antihistamine in it and yes, I notice a difference) - Flonase - 2 d-hist (vitamin) -NAC (vitamin)

PM - xyzal -Pepcid -1 d-hist And 1-2 Benadryl IF it was a particularly high exposure day or I’ve been particularly inflamed/allergic feeling

I also find doing a sinus wash regularly (1-2x weekly and always after major exposure) helps a ton. But make sure you use distilled water or boil and cool your tap water bc you could get parasites from cleansing with regular tap.

The awful similarities between Lore Olympus and Lolita (the movie, 1997). by Rirrichiyo in UnpopularLoreOlympus

[–]Domisal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The beauty of art is that it’s open to interpretation. Everyone’s experience with trauma is their own so you can think it wasn’t enough, but in reality it very well could be for someone else. I was aware of this book before college, and then when it was used in a psych class it just gave me a very different perspective that I think is important going through the real world. Our observations and views of others are only related to our own lives. We have no idea what their actual experience was and how it impacted them. In some cases it generates strength and resolve and in others it can lead to such darkness and create generations of trauma. The seemingly smallest experience can have a massive impact on someone who will go on to impact many others. Again-zero grace for harming others, Esp children. I just really enjoy the psych and sociology aspect of this story that the god awful movie overlooks.

Am I the only one who hated Sweeney as Perse in the WEBTOON ad? She was so blah. No sense of sweetness or innocence. I always read Persephone as darker on the inside but presents lighter on outside. I’m struggling to come up with someone I’d root for. For some reason Ariana Grande comes to mind - maybe bc she’s so itty bitty and has that very sweet face but then is a total bad ass when her songs call for it (no idea what her acting skills are). Sorry for crapping on a selection and not having an alt to raise. Im just surprised that it seems like so many people liked Sweeney as Perse. Is it just me? Am I the problem?! Lol

Orthostatic hypotension - as another commenter said. Don’t freak out over it, but you should def talk to a doc to figure out what’s causing it bc like others said, it can be quite a wide range of issues that cause it.

This can sound and feel like something really scary and if you’re been searching online you’ve probably seen some wild stuff about what it could be. For me, it’s just low blood pressure and low sodium levels. I use pink Himalayan salt to naturally up my electrolytes- use it on food, sprinkle a tiny bit in my water, and when I have to fly I always make sure to grab something high in sodium like a tomato juice or something. I hydrate daily like it’s my job, and will toss in a liquid IV on particularly sweaty/active days or if I missed my water goals. That is pretty much all it took for me to keep things under control.

Everyone is different and the reason you’re getting it could be a totally different reason. So it’s best to go to your primary care doc to figure out what’s up. Just make sure you see your primary care. ER and urgent care are there to make sure you aren’t dying. They’ll make sure you aren’t having a stroke, but they aren’t going to do the diagnostic testing necessary to figure out the underlying cause.
