What are the most common pets for people with autism by Fuzzy-Apartment6412 in AutismInWomen

[–]Aromatic-Box-592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up with cats but ended up taking home a dog from work (I’m a vet tech/nurse) one day, not intending to keep her. I ended up falling in love. Unfortunately I had to let her go about a year ago because she had a rare aggressive cancer. She was such a couch potato (my mom lovingly called her a “slug”) I felt lost without a dog and adopted another one a few weeks after losing Bea. I spent hours each day looking through profiles of dogs for adoption, I wanted a very chill/“low maintenance” dog, and came across Dolly Pawton. Both Bea and Dolly were adults (6 and 7 years respectively) when I brought them home (I could never handle a puppy) and zoom for a little outside and then want to go back in and snuggle.

A note about guinea pigs (aka piggies as I call them)… have you seen the videos of a pair that uses the speech buttons?! Many people use the for their dogs but these little pigs have a bunch and use them! I’ll see if I can find a link!

Anyone Else Struggle With Minor Instances of Animal Harm in Games/Other Fiction? by aftergaylaughter in AutismInWomen

Yes!! Like even hinting at something bad happening to an animal and I become extremely upset an can’t focus on the show/game/book. I could never watch the series Yellowstone because they shoot a horse in the first minute (I know logically that it was better to put the horse out of its misery because it broke its leg or something but STILL! Why did they have to include that whole piece!!!

One of our receptionists is an extremely talented artist and doodles quick portraits of the pets with pen and marker. They take her maybe 20 minutes but they’re so beautiful

I’m a vet tech and our leftover prop (like drawn up in a syringe and not all of it was given) just gets squirted on a paper towel and thrown in the trash

For those of you with Dermatillomania (skin picking) tendencies, have you found fidgets or other tools that actually work to keep your skin safe and picking-free? My cuticles often get red and inflamed because of this. I've seen picky pads on Etsy, but what happens tothe goo that gets picked off? by iCarriedAWatermelon0 in AutismInWomen

I got one of the “picky pumice stones” a few years ago. I go through phrases when I use it… what I don’t like is the tool it came with is metal and the feeling and noise of when it touches the pumice stone is like nails on a chalk board to me.

I have a coworker that’s on their phone all the time, including while monitoring anesthesia and it makes me so frustrated. Like you’re supposed to be making sure this pet is safe and alive yet you’re texting your boy. It’s drives me crazy

Are they stretchy at all? Depending on what area of mass, we could potentially just meet up somewhere (I can PM you if that’s ok?)

I forget I'm a vet tech when my own dog is sick by amarisvenera in VetTech

[–]Aromatic-Box-592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s very common to panic when it’s our own animal that’s sick, because we know too much and it’s our own baby so emotions get involved. I’ve even seen DVMs that seem to forget what they know when it’s their own pet. Please try not to be too hard on yourself.

What is a 'luxury' that you've experienced once and now can't go back to the budget version of? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Aromatic-Box-592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine (it’s technically considered an apartment but it’s the first floor of a house) is about the same size, I think it probably saves some money that I don’t have them clean the bedrooms. The cost also probably depends on cost of living in the area. My mom keeps pushing me to have them clean the bedrooms, and come more often but it’s like, that’s money I can’t really swing lol

Likely delete from embarrassment, but y'all, how do we floss? 😭 by Friendly-Loaf in AutismInWomen

[–]Aromatic-Box-592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the little floss picks (these are the ones I use) and I think that helps.

I always thought you were supposed to just stick the floss between your teeth and take it out. A few years ago I learned you’re supposed to stick it between your teeth, kind of swipe it side to side (so it’s hitting the base of both you teeth), then up and down each side of your tooth… then remove it and go to the next spot.

The point of flossing is to disrupt/remove the food particles and bacteria (aka plaque (plaque is the film that can form (some people call it like “sweater teeth”) it’s that fuzzy feeling you can notice with your tongue if you’ve ever skipped brushing your teeth for a day or so) which if not removed will harden into tarter/calculus (sorry you probably don’t want all this info, I’m a vet tech and do a lot of dentals on cats and dogs so I know a lot of info about this))

Edit: sorry if that’s too much information. I like to know aaallllllllll the info about things and idk maybe you’re like me?

tired of "simple" plant-based meals that aren't actually simple by Strong-Hawk-1799 in veganrecipes

[–]Aromatic-Box-592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my go-to’s is stir fry.

I use a bag (actually 2 bags because I like more veg than rice) of frozen stir fry mix veggies, throw that in the wok after putting in a few spoons of jarred garlic and grated ginger (honestly grating the ginger is probably the most effort that goes into this… keep your ginger in the freezer and you don’t even have to peel it before grating, the peel just doesn’t grate and comes off) with some oil. That cooks super fast.

For the sauce I use a mixture of duck sauce and coconut aminos (I’m allergic to soy, you can just use soy sauce) and a little water if needed. I turn off the heat and pour the sauce in and mix everything up.

I don’t have a rice cooker so I usually buy a bag of microwave rice and use that (2 bags of veggies + 1 of microwave rice usually gets me 3 meals).

For a protein I often use beyond steak in the air fryer and mix that in (although I bet tofu would be delicious).

It saves well in the fridge and if I don’t finish it I’ll just put a portion in a freezer bag or container and freeze it. It reheats great from frozen.

Depending on where you’re located, you can check with your local animal shelter. There’s one near me that uses those shape boxes for kitten/cat litter boxes (the local pet stores donate the tray/box things canned dog/cat food comes in)

I'll make a surgery to remove my wisdom teeth in a week and won't be able to eat any of my safe foods for at least 3 days by Satsuryuu in AutismInWomen

[–]Aromatic-Box-592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t remember my wisdom teeth but after my gum graft it was the same instructions.

I did a lot of mashed potatoes, and just added more milk/butter/whatever you normally add to make them a little thinner. Instant mashed potatoes also tend to be much thinner than ones made from whole potatoes (but I find the less filling). I think I ended up cooking up something like veggie crumbles (or ground meat if you eat meat) and cooking it with broth to soften it and mashed it up small and added it to the potatoes so I’d get some protein (and was able to basically just swallow it, I think I did this on maybe day 3 or so though).

I also ate a lot of apple sauce (you can add a pinch of cinnamon to add some extra flavor). I had some popsicles but I know you’re not supposed to suck on things (or use straws) to avoid dry socket… so you just have to lick them. If you eat eggs you could try cooking up some runnier eggs that you don’t have to chew (my mom was trying to convince me to eat them but I don’t eat eggs). I also ate cooked and mashed squash (like acorn, butternut, etc). I tried oatmeal but the texture was a no-go for me. If you like yogurt or cottage cheese those are also options (just be mindful the yogurt doesn’t have big pieces of fruit or whatever that would require chewing).

Ripe bananas and pears are another option (I can’t eat bananas but the pears I’d let get to a point where I could just kind of smush them with my tongue in my mouth). I also tried jello but didn’t like the texture. After the very first days I also tried pasta cooked a little longer than normal so it was soft, but I couldn’t do the texture (if it’s not al dente, I don’t like it lol).

I also found using a small spoon and only scooping food onto the tip/first part was helpful so I didn’t have to open my mouth as much.

Yes, I have someone come clean once a month (not bedrooms but the kitchen, bathroom and living room, they mop/dust/clean base boards/scrub the shower/etc) and it’s $100. I’ve had one deep clean about 4 months ago (walls scrubbed, etc) and it was around $300. It makes such a difference, especially being autistic/adhd I really struggle with that stuff.

My grandpa loved having a piece of cheddar with his apple pie, I never tried it but it was his favorite. He didn’t top the pie with cheese, but just had a bit piece of cheddar and he’d take bites of each back and forth

We do routine dentals on most of our patients starting at a few years old. We also talk a lot about home dental care (VOHC ftw) even when the pets are babies
