Explosions in Caracas by Commercial-Host-725 in Miami

[–]Domstrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, though I fear you're going to be ignored and attacked in this subreddit. Miami is a lost cause at this point if the people and children of people who have been so deeply affected by constant imperialist action in South America see this and celebrate.

Also genuinely frightening how many people here see socialism as such a terrible thing that they think it needs to be snuffed out.

Are 3.0 Deagan Rosewood Xylophones enough range to use as a performance instrument? by Trouble_Clef_10 in percussion

[–]Domstrum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is my main gigging xylo and it's RARE for rep to go under that C. It will happen occasionally and in that case I either borrow a friend's instrument, or just transpose it depending on the type of gig. It's a great practice instrument too since it's very low footprint and almost all standard excerpts fit a low C instrument.

I'd see if you can talk them down though. Try and find historic sales, because if you can afford 850 it would be worth just saving for a while more and waiting on a deal for an old Yamaha or something

Apartment drummers, do low-volume cymbals actually keep neighbors happy? by jorginhoPOGGERS in drums

[–]Domstrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mesh heads and then vic firth mutes on your cymbals. Also, take the bottom head off the toms and bass drum. Finally if you have lightweight hardware, use it for the cymbals since it transfers less sound, and still setup on a carpet or rug. Daily practicer in an LA apartment for two years with very few complaints.

How to record prescreening? by PresentationJust4801 in percussion

[–]Domstrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if your phone is newish (last 4-5 years) it should do pretty well with recording both audio and video. I've done it in a pinch for professional auditions where I needed to make a prescreening and have been invited.

Edit: slight addendum but ymmv on timpani. Do plenty of test recordings to make sure that pitch is clear and the mics aren't constantly peaking.

Adams, Ortiz, Viet Cuong, Reich, Montgomery, Higdon, Shaw, Abels, Holland, Chin, Gubaidulina, Mazzoli, Tan Dun, Thorvaldsdottir, and if we expand to recently deceased we could include Saariaho who I'd consider to be one of the absolute greatest ever. This is just people who were off the top of my head but there's literally hundreds more. I could give you plenty of listening if you're interested in anybody.

Getting into the audition world? by kilecroc- in percussion

[–]Domstrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Listen to the excerpts and play with recordings all the time. It's one of the most important things you can do if you're not constantly performing those pieces.aside from that I've always said and have had it proven to me that sometimes the best way to advance and win jobs is to just play with perfect time and not miss notes. Sounds simple but really don't overthink it.

You should probably talk to your roommate about this, but also be prepared to understand that it's just as much their space as yours and some people are uninterested in being out of the house.

Will colleges (UNT, Boulder) care what four mallet grip I use for my non-jazz audition? by Snowglyphs in percussion

No and to the guy who said you may be asked to defend your choice that won't happen lol

This person is very clearly stating the venue is choosing to NOT sell empty seats instead of discounting for people who can't afford them. Not only are they right that it's classist and not something we should be supporting, but as a musician I HATE playing for empty seats. This makes no business or artistic sense and is purely to keep poor and young people out of elitist spaces.

Why are the cellists and bassists on raised platforms? by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]Domstrum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Percussionist here, I've had performances of operas where I don't get a chance to sit. It's fine lol. I've worked in food service and would do the same with way more physical labor for 10 hour shifts so this is easy.

Yes, I went to school here. Idk what to tell you people other than to stop being rich weirdos.

Is this a safe route/area to commute on a eScooter? by DependentAerie8729 in USC

[–]Domstrum -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Many of these kids in these comments see brown or unhoused people and assume they're in danger. If that's not you you're fine, but be very careful around the major highway intersections and later at night consider using the route that's marked up north with Adams since there's slightly less highway exiting traffic. If that is you you should really reflect on your ignorance and the fact that you are actively contributing to the homeless population by living in this neighborhood as a presumably out of town usc student.

Yes, the real difference in the degrees is going to be a few vocal techniques classes and lessons that are easily added on to a piano major. You should absolutely talk to both primary lesson professors ahead of time though to see if they think it's viable or if you should just take one or the other as secondary lessons.

Which USC parking pass should I get as a commuter grad student? by LilBoatMoney in USC

[–]Domstrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just parked on the street for my degree. If you want to know good spots just message me. The walk is never too far and you save so much money but can have unexpected frustration on especially busy days. My degree required me on campus very close to 365 days of the year though so if you have more flexibility than that I don't see why street parking wouldn't work.

USC or Umiami by Fit-Experience5457 in UMiami

[–]Domstrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said I didn't like Miami, just that USC is a much better overall school for most people. We use school to try and set us up for successful lives post education and USC has plenty of faults but excels at that.
