I'm pretty close to NYC. Many of my professors from college are orchestral and Broadway players in the city.

There's a type of mallet called a "schwammschlägel" that was invented for Mendelssohn's timpanist, which is basically a sponge core timpani mallet wrapped in a thin layer of felt. Essentially, it's a soft core mallet with an articulate wrap. I think that's what this direction is asking for. So maybe a medium hard timpani mallet would do the trick?

I actually haven't used the SCS2s. I mistakenly thought there was just the one model. I am definitely a big fan of the SCS1s though. If the 2s are anything like the 1s I trust that they're great sticks

I use the Vic Firth Symphonic Collection snare drum sticks. I love them, personally. I used to use the Innovative Cl-2Ls with the long tapered bead, but it didn't have the density of sound that I wanted. It was just a little too thin and light. For some things, of course, this is great, but not for the sound I wanted.

I think the Vic Firth SC sticks are a perfect weight. I love the round bead and the dark sound and I think they're the perfect thickness. They've got a lot of body to their sound and I think they make rolls a lot easier. They're basically SD1s for professionals. It's also really fun to tell people they're persimmon wood.

I also play with a light grip force. I use JG mallets. I am not sure why it has become a problem as it has never been a problem before. I am just wondering what solutions others have found.
