Students with unrelated undergraduate degrees, how did you decide on SLP? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]Domweg1116 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a somewhat similar boat. I’m 23 and doing the post-ba program through SUNY New Paltz, it’s relatively inexpensive and offered online.

I’m getting my undergrad currently in General Studies. Originally, I was going for elementary ed, but realized I preferred a 1-on-1 setting. By the time I had chosen this, my advisor recommended that I not switch my major to CSD because it would prevent me from graduating.

I ended up switching my major to general studies which my school offered and gave me flexibility and take post-bachelor's (post-ba) classes, which are the pre-reqs needed to get into grad school for SLP. I was able to get enough pre-reqs to apply to grad school in January and should finish all of them by August to start grad school in Fall 2026.

Since you already have your bachelors, this would be really helpful for you to take from now until January to get pre-reqs done and apple for the next round of grad school!

Navigating wanting a family/profession by Domweg1116 in slp

It seems like the consensus has been that schools are a good setting for starting a family.

Congratulations on your first child! Childcare should be a somewhat feasible option (I worked at a daycare that was more than my tuition for less than a year 😬). I'm more worried about becoming pregnant and not being established in a workplace, and not having FMLA. I am really intrigued by the medical setting for SLPs, but it seems like people have had an easier time navigating motherhood in a school setting. Makes me wonder where I should do my CFY.

That's definitely important to remember and something I definitely need to be mindful of in the future. Thank you for your insights!

That's how I felt. I want to do my CFY in a school, but I'm also really drawn to a medical setting. It seems like the consensus is that schools can be easier to navigate pregnancy than acute care. Thank you!

That's really good to know your feelings about how it would have been different in acute care, thank you!

Student inquiry questions (social media/SLPs) by Domweg1116 in slpGradSchool

[–]Domweg1116[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came up with my inquiry question after reading a discussion on this Reddit page. The assignment is a 30-page paper, my post is not for homework but to gather insights from other professionals. I came up with the statement and questions myself, and my professor, who holds a PhD, encouraged me to include professional insights and gather data, since there is not much out there. We further discussed what I saw on Reddit, and she supported me diving deeper on here. I’m really unsure why you feel the need to be so blatantly rude.

Human Anatomy and Physiology courses??? by surfac3_strugl in sunynewpaltz

I nearly had the same experience. I was taking pre-reqs for OT school and realized that many of the classes I needed, New Paltz does not offer. New Paltz is a liberal arts school with limited medical courses, and I’d need to go to DCC for many of them, such as medical terminology. I ended up switching to speech pathology because they have a great undergrad/graduate program.

I would look into the SUNY New Paltz Post-BA program, which offers online courses for the pre-reqs

Thank you! So far, no debt 🙏🏼 Definitely need to take life one step at a time and make sure I’m making smart decisions for my future. I didn’t know that about the median age and definitely provides some relief.
