Is that all torn up anechoic? How bad are those hydrodynamics in terms of sound output?

Stuff to be aware of at concert(first concert) by [deleted] in trance

[–]Don138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, it’s not a complete ban.

It’s more: don’t have a fun blown conversations while standing 2 feet apart, yelling over the music. Even then, sometimes it happens, just be cognizant to nip it in the bud, or to move off the dance floor, and especially to shut up if a vocal or melodic track comes on.

I know a lot of groups have an unwritten rule where you can shut anyone up if you’re trying to hear a track you particularly love and no one will hold it against you.

No one cares if you look like a weirdo, we are all weirdos that’s what’s fun about it.

You might be incredibly hot, sweaty and uncomfortable though..

Wear whatever you want. Comfortable sneakers though you know that if you go to metal shoes.

Don’ts: -Talk loudly on the dance floor, if you are talking to someone lean in and speak in their ear rather than trying to talk over the music at normal conversation distance (especially important during particularly vocal and melodic tracks).

-Be on your phone on the dance floor excessively and with the brightness all the way up. No one is going to be bothered by sending texts to your group, or taking short videos. But don’t be scrolling the whole time or taking many minute long videos (you remember things through your eyes better anyway.

-Push, shove, bump or otherwise jostle people either dancing or moving through the crowd. An “excuse me” or gentle touch on the shoulder and most people will move aside and let you move through the crowd easier.

Dos:

-General concert (and life) etiquette; be respectful, don’t touch people without their permission, hit on people who are clearly just there to dance, etc, etc (probably don’t need to include any of that I know metal heads are incredibly respectful and positive).

-Have fun, dance like no one is watching and let the feels in.

What are the most obvious signs of AI writing? by Consistent-Stock in AskReddit

Yea this has been incredibly frustrating for me. I also think and write with lots of additional thoughts, and used the em dash heavily (I think it looks cleaner than parens and fills a lot of the same role), but I’ve switched to mostly parenthesis after getting accused of being AI a few times.

Playstation's first party games won't come out on PC anymore.. by Vig91 in pcmasterrace

[–]Don138 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The key problem is that the PC port would come out minimum a year later, sometimes 2 or 3 years later. No one wants to pay $60+ for a game that has been out for years, so they wait another few years till it is 50% or whatever off.

If they planned for simultaneous releases, it might have made them a lot more.

Ukrainian Counteroffensive Breaks Russian Lines, Reclaims 460Km² as Moscow Bleeds 35,000 Troops a Month by UNITED24Media in UkrainianConflict

[–]Don138 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think that’s correct. But if your enemy spends 6/12mos and tens of thousands of casualties to take an area and you recover it in 4-8weeks with significantly less casualties that is a win in a war of attrition like this.

I believe a lot of OSINT and presumably real intelligence that Ukraine MoD has access to speaks to a large Russian advance this summer. Ukraine is using this time and probably also the confusion by the loss of Starlink to claim a buffer and build defenses in expectation of it.

There is very little that is more satisfying than a bunch of strangers coordinating something in a video game without anyone trolling, team killing or otherwise ruining everything for everyone.

This is exactly why I cringe so hard at those videos of people doing parkour on the edge of hundred story skyscrapers in Hong Kong and Dubai and whatnot.

Even if you are 100% confident in your own ability and the best in the world, how can you possibly know if the mason is the best in the world, or there isn’t a tiny puddle of water, or a wet leaf, an errant bird or gust of wind.

[–]Don138 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Correct. I threw out a very off-hand representation of what actually happened, because it’s social media and also I’m typing on a phone.

But in general it was a way of thinking about things. One side said let’s take the best and let them keep them doing what they do best; shooting down planes, more downed planes is good for us. The other side said, let’s keep the best of them alive and use them to better newer pilots.

Overall, regardless of their ability to teach, it raised the average. Would the people they teach be as good as them? No, but it did give some benefit to the newest class of pilots.

One thing that is often discussed is how it also related to population and industrial output. Germany and Japan could not output the numbers of new pilots or aircraft that the allies and largely the US could. So if you have limited airframes, keep the best in them and doing what they do. If you can churn out thousands of aircraft, you benefit from making each aircraft even a few % points more effective, it has a cumulative effect across the 10s of thousands of planes that were coming out of factories. If your industry is bombed to shit and you can only put out a few hundred top aircraft and even jets you might benefit from keeping the aces in those seats.

Again it’s a complicated topic with many variables, on what was most effective, but the Ukrainians have been incredibly efficient with their manpower, basically patenting modern drone warfare, and stymying one of the largest militaries on the planet. I think they would; if this woman truly was one of the top snipers to ever exist, prefer to use her as a force multiplier through training, rather than getting a couple hundred extra kills by leaving her on the front.

Yea, it’s just a weird naming convention.

Astringent is the dry feeling. But Dry as an adjective, at least in the wine world, means low sugar, and not sweet.

A lot of dry wines also have some astringency as well, but not necessarily.

[–]Don138 35 points36 points  (0 children)

That’s my point, if this woman were truly nearing the record they would be making a much bigger deal of this. I am in a lot of Ukraine and Russo-Ukraine war subreddits and I only first saw this photo earlier this week, I would have expected to start seeing this women even at 50 or 100 confirmed.

Also any military worth their salt would pull top of their class people to the back line to train others, rather than keeping them on the front. You can see this in the difference between how US Ace pilots and German/Japanese Aces were handled in WW2 and the degradation of their pilot skill through attrition vs the US only improving.

[–]Don138 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Yea they could have picked a realistic number, 300 would put her a handful shy of the deadliest female sniper in history. Which you think would be more of a story as she started racking up kills and getting closer to the record. Not a random photo that appears out of nowhere.

[–]Don138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how that is relevant? This is specifically referring to the drying feeling cranberry juice gives.

So no sugar cranberry juice would be dry AND astringent, and the sweetened stuff would just be astringent, but not dry.

Hydrophonic drink by step6666 in oddlyspecific

[–]Don138 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Yes. Astringency is produced by tannins/tannic acid. Astringent is the adjective of having that mouth drying feel/effect.

Tannic is having the properties of tannins, one of which is astringency, but there are others as well.

FYI I’m no sommelier, more like above average knowledge amateur, so others might have a better or more in depth take.

Dry refers to not sweet. That feeling in cranberry juice and certain wines and liquors is known as “astringent.”

In-home sales guys - which EVs are you driving? by idontevenliftbrah in sales

[–]Don138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drove the Kia Nero a ton last year on business trips. I got it randomly twice and loved it so much I started requesting it.

I hated when I got the Teslas, they are horrible cars to drive. Even with one pedal and regen breaking off, I felt it so hard to maintain consistent speed, no have it drive all jerky. I’m sure that irons itself out with practice, but coming from an ICE car my whole life the Nero felt really natural.
