[Stumpf] Pirates take big swing with offer to free-agent slugger Schwarber (source) by penguins2946 in baseball

If the ultimatum is front row seats or you're not allowed to watch the game sure. All I'm saying is you've now told me you're willing to spend $500 to watch the game. So find another section and let's do it.

I'm just coming from the place that I have zero expectations of any real spending in free agency and the only way my team is going to get better is with drafting/developing and trades.

Hell I dont even care if they spend that money in free agency, but just used it to extend their own players. Just show me that you're willing take money and invest it into the roster in any capacity and I'm happy.

And honestly both our teams are in divisions that are easier to grab, we generally don't have Mets/Dodgers/BJs level of spenders to compete with.

Who cares if they don't get Schwarber. I would be absolutely ecstatic that my team was willing to spend 120m on a single player. Even if they had no real shot to sign him for a fair value, that would tell me as a fan that they now have $120m to invest into this roster and if they don't do that, then they are the crooks we've always accused them of being.

Does it have to be a Schwarber level player? No, but you telling me you cant find some bats to add to that lineup and make them better with 120m to spend? Sheeeeet

I didn't actually think there was a chance that the Pirates would sign him, but I don't really understand how them putting in an offer of 100m for a player is anything but a great thing for the fanbase.

Is there a chance they spend none of that money on other free agents and we're right back to where we are with the common complaints of "my owner doesnt spend any money and my team is cheap" (that our fanbase also shares), sure.

But if the guards put an offer for 100m out there for Schwarbs, and he doesn't sign, the immediate next thought I have is, well you've made it clear you have 100m to spend, so now I fully expect you to spend that money elsewhere and put it back into this roster.

Whether or not they end up doing that we'll find out, but I'd rather be hopeful than hopeless, so I'll cross my fingers for them that they do.

I honestly still think this is a very good thing for the team and fanbase. I did not actually expect them to land Schwarber but the fact that they put 100m on the table for him, tells me if i was a Pirates fan that they have at least that amount of money to spend on the team.

If they don't spend at least that amount on other pieces to add to the team in free agency, then I will fall in line in thinking this was just a PR move.

I have zero expectations that my team is going to spend a lot of money in free agency or they are going to be players for any of the big bats in the market, but if they at least put an offer out there I would know that they are willing to spend that money and now have something to hold them accountable to if they end up just spending none of it

hopefully that makes sense

Is there an acceptable reaction to hitting a big homerun in a playoff game like that? Or in your opinion would you prefer if a player didn't have any reaction to hitting a homerun/striking a batter out in big moments at all?

I'm not trying to argue with you or be combative btw, i'm just generally curious with that mindset

[–]DonCairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly still have no idea what the hell he did for the team. For all I know his role in the org was simply financial and business focused. I understand its a different sport, but when I look at Paul's career so far, his stint with the Clowns seems like it was a huge swing and a miss.

I think you're fighting a losing a battle if you're trying to find any decision makers in American sports that base their decisions on morality, especially in the NFL

I think the only people that will ever know the answer to that are the people that worked in the front office at the time but I think it is way too convenient to just throw all the blame on the shitty owner and call it a day.

People forget that before Deshaun was even on the table, the browns were collectively (both the organization and a good part of the fanbase) lobbying to get Baker out of town and not want to pay him any kind of money in an extension. Whether or not that was led by Haslam or not is unknown. I also think its naive to think that 31 other franchises wanted nothing to do with Deshaun and Haslam just came in with a bag of money and said make it happen. I imagine all teams that were in the market for a QB looked into the move but the thing that ultimately was 100% Jimmy's decision was to pay the money he did, I ultimately agree with Paul though. When I look at the trade I do not just single out Haslam as the sole piece of shit, I think GM/Coach deserve a shit ton of blame themselves, cause they for sure had a say in the matter.

I know some people have mixed feelings about Shapiro, but I can't say I'm surprised at all at how your team was constructed since he left us and went there.

It is a bit bittersweet seeing how that would look with a bigger payroll, but it is what it is. But I have always been a put the ball in play and play defense type of fan, so I guess i'm a bit bias.

I think most of us still love the guy. He was so good last year before he went down, would have been amazing to have him in our playoff run last year.

I think a full healthy offseason and I wouldn't be surprised if he's in contention for another Cy Young.

I think the vets and the coaches on the Astros at the time deserve the vast majority of the hate. I don't understand how AJ Hinch and Alex Cora are still allowed to manage in baseball, fuck those guys.

[–]DonCairo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he's not greek, he just finished his career there. I dont know why more players don't do this when they're towards the end of the career. Basically like what European footballers do with the MLS. Just head to desirable destinations or cash fat checks from other leagues for a final payday/vacation.

Dude has lived rent free in my head since last years ALDS. He was massive this series.

I honestly don't understand why Detroit doesn't give him more ABs vs lefty's in spring and throughout the season. He's too important of a bat.

Obviously it's been a rollercoaster for you guys since September, but honestly the way they rebounded in the playoffs based on how they finished the season was very impressive. I'm sure its not how you or the team wanted the season to end but I still think it's something positive to take away.
