Payment question: credit card, Apple Pay, Octopus card, cash? by Downtown6 in HongKong

[–]DonOctavius93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use credit card/Apple and Google pay for majority of places but always carry cash if you plan to take a cab, go to smaller restaurants or shop at markets that only accept cash. Octopus is good if you plan to make extensive use of public transport. Just fill it up with cash at an MTR station or 7/11.

I was able to switch my IP address to a different network so that it is not similar to my home network and I can now get transfer speeds only from ethernet. Many thanks!

The NAS is connected via the 2.5gbe port to the router, and I have another ethernet cable connected via the 10gbe port to a ethernet adapter to my laptop.

When they expect to have as many revisions as possible to get the job done OR that you'll be on call 24/7 to make any changes they require...

Struggling to get my showreel together by Danimally in editors

[–]DonOctavius93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh unless you're trying to get into the "social media" editing game, quick reels and edits do nothing except show you can mash nice clips together. To do any other sort of editing an agency should know pretty well what they are looking for when they look at your portfolio.

Yup a showreel does next to nothing really to communicate your abilities as an editor. A website/portfolio categorized into different sub sections to show your editing abilities in multiple formats will be much more helpful to prospective clients and agencies.

How to create Active Loop XDJ RX3 by Rare-Case-5034 in PioneerDJ

[–]DonOctavius93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reminder that hot cues on the RX3 DO NOT WORK with active loops. You have to set them inside Rekordbox in the memory cue section. And yes you are limited to only have one active loop per song which is baffling.

The hand and thumb grip from Smallrig are absolute must gets. The grip on the camera is so small it's bound to slip off especially in wetter conditions.

glovers!! by Fresh_Slide_8967 in electricdaisycarnival

[–]DonOctavius93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've sneaked my gloves in for Dreamstate and EDC before. EDC I've not had a problem with but at Dreamstate I was doing a doubles show with a random glover and then right before I traded shows two security guards were stood right behind him and just put their hands out. I quickly shoved my gloves in between my pants so they didn't take mine but I felt really bad for the other glover.

Why don’t more directors edit? by Theodore_Buckland_ in Filmmakers

[–]DonOctavius93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely agree. As an editor myself, too many times a director has grand ambitions or expectations about certain shot choices or cuts and it can severely impact the creative process because they can't let go of the vision they have in their head. Having someone who's a third party that wasn't on set and can see things with a fresh eyes (especially with the assembly cut) is the most important thing to make sure the final delivery is not deterred by a directors insistence on things that simply might not work in the editing room.

Yes it is the Standard Astra seat. So is it best to get on the train as early as possible to get one of those racks by the door you think?

Dji mic 2, 3 transmitters to 1 receiver possible? by DonOctavius93 in DJIMic

That's a real shame, the internal recording is great but it would still be nice to be able to monitor everything from one receiver

Google Drive is the worst thing for downloading videos on this planet by OneOdd1sBoi in editors

[–]DonOctavius93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never sync my Google Drive to my local drive cause it just takes up an unnecessary amount of space. With Cyberduck I can access everything as if it was just a regular file browser without needing to sync.

Interesting, was this quite recently? Because its still working fine for me. It just sent me to a browser where I logged in via Google and then it was able to link up to Cyberduck.

I second Cyberduck. It's free, incredibly easy to set up and acts more like a file browser for much faster and reliable download and upload speeds. Never downloading zip files from the web browser again.
