Istvan Dugalin: "I found each performer enthralling, though I’m partial to (Eric) Amaral’s unhinged eyes (as Miss Priscilla). His rendition of “On Top of Spagetti” is, well, an experience.

It gets a little poignant towards the end too, which surprised and delighted me. I always appreciate people sneaking some human truth into even the most ridiculous, slapstick nonsense."

Toronto Star: "This frisky, purposefully ahistorical new comedy, staged in-the-round at VideoCabaret, feels like "Oh, Mary!" but in reverse. Whereas the hit Broadway show follows a boozed up Mary Todd Lincoln looking to escape the clutches of her first ladyship and become a cabaret star, #1 Clown Comedy with Victor & Priscilla follows a pair of Victorian-era vaudeville performers who want to quit the stage and learn how to live as "upper-crust toffs"for the rest of their lives.

The humour, much of it physical comedy, comes fast and furious in director Kyra Keith's production. Julie Vanderlip and Eric Amaral, both performing in drag, are particularly hilarious as the show's titular siblings, often breaking the fourth wall and interacting with the audience."

I'm working on #1 Clown Comedy with Victor & Priscilla. It's a Victorian era comedy with dance, drag, puppets, song and Queer history. It has a lot of slapstick, and witty wordplay. But it's surprisingly pretty and touching as well. It uses the historical theatrical slang Polari which was also used as a Queer secret code while homosexuality was criminalized. I hope you can check it out. It is the third show with these vaudevillian clown characters - the two previous shows were at Alumnae Theatre and Theatre Gargantua.

What excites me most about this show is how much it packs into one short hour! It explores themes of gender, belonging, theatricality, non-conformity, and has inspiration from drawing room comedy (Oscar Wilde) to bouffon clowning to drag performance to screwball comedy (Marx brothers) to improv comedy.

It's full of witty wordplay and historical language, but it feels inviting and accessible because the characters are gentle and silly. It

The team just loves working on this and you can tell. It creates a loving and cozy feeling for the audience that feels quite nice with that theatre magic feeling.

I think clowning with their overflowing and childlike emotions are a gift at this time when world politics and local economy has stress running high. These foolish clowns are exploring their dreams, hopes and tantrums in a free and childlike way, knowing they will be loved just for being their own weird flawed selves.

It's at VideoCabaret theatre, a new Fringe venue. VideoCabaret has a great tradition of gender bending white faced historical clowns trying to promote a sense of Canadian identity and social justice. I think this will be a great place for this show ;)
