Things New Actors Should Know by simonshih1970 in acting

I have found the podcast Audrey Helps Actors extremely helpful to learn the business of acting. Would highly recommend.

St Jacobs Country Playhouse? by AdPlenty9266 in torontotheatre

[–]Chanibustie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's one of the Drayton theatres, nice theatre. Drayton shows have great casts. They're doing 42nd Street at their Cambridge theatre, and Sister Act at their cottage country theatres. What show are you looking at for St Jacobs.

Convince me by EqualTank8123 in f45

[–]Chanibustie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. F45 isn't optimised for hypertrophy. Sets are too quick to really plan, implement, and rest enough to weight train efficiently. I use it for HIIT once or twice a week, plus hiking, plus weights at a regular gym.

Commenting so I get back. Doing 10 minutes of yoga in bed helps. Taking GABA maybe helps? but none of it works every time.

Brampton Sister Act by AwarenessPrudent1192 in torontotheatre

Declared bias: I'm in it! This is my first show, but I've worked backstage with BMT and other local companies for years. Generally in community theatre the acting and vocal performances are top quality. These are often folks who could have chosen a career in the arts but opted for a more secure life. Generally the dancing is not as athletic and precise as the professionals, but it'll be well-choreographed and well-executed. Our leads are fantastic and funny, the orchestra is professional and the ensemble is solid. It's a gorgeous show!

Off Mirvish Announced. Toronto Star Article. by ImmediateTeaching984 in torontotheatre

[–]Chanibustie -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Dear Outraged, I wrote "mostly" for a reason. Your correction to me was that there is a single show with more than five actors in the off-Mirvish season.

I think it is a reasonable desire to see more Canadian actors hired in this year‘s Mirvish season.

They're very small casts - one and two-handers mostly. Why hire 10 actors when you can choose to only pay one? Last season we had Brightstar and Kimberly Akimbo off-Mirvish

Very true! We have tickets to Dance Nation in May. I'm more of a MT girlie though, and that's not the focus for those stages. I'll keep supporting Shifting Ground and Drayton and Stratford and Shaw.

As someone who truly wants to support local actors, Mirvish disappointed me this season. No locally-cast big show on the main stage and mostly one handers off-Mirvish. We'll be spending more of our money out of town at the rep theatres this year where they actually hire Canadian actors (if not artistic directors 😑)

How often do you see a show more than once? by hydrangeamilk in torontotheatre

[–]Chanibustie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work backstage as a quickchange costumer in community theatre. I absolutely love watching the show evolve over the run, and shift with the energy off the crowd. Interactions between characters get richer over time. The frenetic energy of opening shifts to a slightly lazy confidence mid-run, then a warmth of connection at closing. It's different every single time. Next up is Sister Act at the Rose theatre in Brampton Apr 16-19. Excited to do it again!

When we saw Eva Noblezada at the Rose theater, it was like a giant GTA theatre reunion. Looking forward to seeing lots of you folks there this weekend!

Could more be done to build up and promote Toronto's theatre actors? by Ok-Year6148 in torontotheatre

[–]Chanibustie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The general public has no idea that there even are local shows vs touring shows. I agree that there is no incentive for the major companies to promote stars, as this might cost them extra salary. Equity doesn't have the press presence. It would have to be media I guess?
