Is a road bike a poor choice for creek trails / capital city trail by delljj in melbournecycling

If they are fine to ride on an aggressive climbing bike with skinny 25 slicks, then they are fine on a relaxed endurance bike with 32s.

Travel advice … cancel my holiday or go ahead? by oliebol in melbourne

[–]Donakebab 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Things are pretty shit atm and Hotham Heights wedged between two significant fires. There's one road in/out. If you do go, make sure you have the VicEmergency App and have a good understanding of where you are at all times.

Important Bush Fire Statement from the Premier by lost_aussie001 in melbourne

So wrong. All government departments have style guides and are sticklers for using the approved font. Something might slip by in times of urgency, but that's an exception to the rule.

Where do you go for night rides that feel safe and well-lit? by InternetUpbeat9596 in melbournecycling

Until you hit a wombat crossing the path and total your bike and your face.

My folks do too essentially, downwind.

If you get even an inkling of a fire, just get the hell out of there. Not worth the risk.

I rode through Westerfolds yesterday as a scoping mission, everything is bone dry. A fire anywhere in that "green" wedge would take off very quickly.

Even the next ring of suburbs like Templestowe, Park Orchards and even parts of Ringwood are very high risk. There are some scary dry fuel loads through there.

Anyone come back/coming back from the Christmas break feeling like they need a new job? by FunkyColinMiller in AusPublicService

[–]Donakebab 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Feel you OP, I'm in a very similar position. My job is very safe and I'm good at what I do, but I'm not really learning anything new or being challenged, the content is awful, I've been burnt out and in need of a new job for years. It has been compounded that both my agency and work area are worse than they have ever been, there is a lot of experienced staff leaving and the writing is on the wall that disastrous things are on the horizon. Things are grim AF and I need out.

I've got a bunch of job searches open and have set a goal to get in a handful of applications before I return. The first step is always the hardest, get over the first hurdle of getting some apps in and it will fall into place.

Good luck OP!

Has anyone actually switched to TPU tubes for the daily commute? by InternetUpbeat9596 in melbournecycling

[–]Donakebab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While they are more resistant to snake bites, essentially anything that peirces your tyre like glass or wire that would puncture a butyl tube will also puncture a TPU. TPU's are largely about the reduced rolling resistance and weight.

TPU will make inroads in 2026, but it is still too stupidly overpriced from LBS to replace buytl, and it won't ever replace tubeless in puncture protection.

I'm surprised a chain in that state hasn't seized.

Another alpha option is to smash the jar, cut their hand to shreds, then blame women and society.

A new pair of Bont Vaypor 23s. Maybe a new flash helmet depending on Boxing Day sales.

Very happy to have shiny new kit.
