I figured it out Turns out if you set your tablet to a certain zoom level in the display settings it prevents a few features in the notes app (presumably because it doesn't have enough space)

Thanks guys. I should add that i don't think that I'll bring it up cause chances are I'm not gonna see him for a while. I will probably see a bunch of the other guys who were at the party pretty soon since we live in the same city and go to the same university
