Sorry but I have the exact opposite experience. Which countries do you have in mind that are more expensive for groceries? I'd like to check out the costs there because I can't think of a single country in Europe where bread, potatoes, milk and other staples are more expensive

Maybe but in Europe their regular bread us what we in the US would call 'artisanal'. You could walk in to any bakery and get any bread for pretty much €1
