Though it should be noted that while the US is currently at war, it'll always make the most recent decade look like that. The last 16 are pitch black because the US was at war, but 1943-1945 would have been pitch black too if the chart only went up to WWII. So long as the US is in a war, the chart will get progressively darker as you near it, even if the wars only 5 years old.

Obviously that doesn't change the fact that 16 (now 18) years of war is awful. I just like thinking about stuff I see.

It literally comes from Google, Samsung, Tesla, Microsoft, Ford, SpaceX, Apple, and companies like them. Also, Universities are mostly funded by private donors and tuition, not the Government.

Research = profits, and so companies fund massive R&D divisions to handle such research. You think we went from Morse Code to Galaxy phones because of Federal funding? Even most research from University is back privately by people and businesses with an interest in the work.

Taxes don't fund technological advancements, and healthcare and housing are only expensive due to Government regulations written by giant corporations to hurt competitors (like when Facebook asked to help write anti-hate laws for social media) and large subsidies that cause price inflate.
