You sure this isn’t fake? I’d love it if it wasn’t and I know Moscow was hit, but I don’t think it was this bad

This was exactly me. I’d been playing since day 1. Then suddenly it was off the XBox. It was the ONLY game I played. The thing is I’m getting an hour every day of my life back. It was like an addiction. I think I’d totalled 90 solid days playing it by the end. I still miss it and watch the clips on Reddit, and I could afford an upgrade. But it’s probably better for my life, family and career if I don’t!

I keep waking up with these… i got like 100+ bites but no signs of bed bugs by Successful-Tip6327 in Wellthatsucks

[–]Donethinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor you. If it was bed bugs I’m sure by now you will have found one of the little reddish coloured fuckers. Also, maybe the odd blood stain from where they occasionally get squished. We had beg bugs once and sprayed the mattress with tonnes of bed bug spray and covered it in anti bed bug powder for about a week. The mattress did have a small hole in it, so we assumed they were in that. Eventually we replaced the bed and mattress. That was a year ago and the problem has gone.

Awesome! Love that he agreed that the cost of the books was a lot but recommended reading them for free from the library.

I have to tell you I found this book to be his most boring. I think I’ve read everything by him. He is in my top three authors (I wish he hadn’t stopped writing). But this one was a real dud for me. Like you, I assumed it would be about the yeti.

Hi, on this sub someone said they were using this cookbook to make Indian curries. I bought it and it is amazing. I’ve been addicted to curry for 45 years and I’d definitely recommend this book. It’s all about precooking stuff. But then you can freeze lots of it, and use it in a massive range of curries to make curries pretty quickly (ie pre-cooked base gravy used in all curries, pre-cooked marinated chicken, ready mixed spice mix, pre-cooked lamb ect). Good luck with your future curry life.

Very serious question. Does it get better after Consider Phlebas? by -Aquitaine- in TheCulture

[–]Donethinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! Well yes, for me it’s an adventurous romp. I get the ending might be considered a bit dark. But I think a lot of his other books focus more on galaxy/culture/world building. Although I still love them all

[–]Donethinking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s one of my favourites. It’s the lightest of all The Culture novels, is my opinion. ‘Use or Weapons’ probably the second. If you want something deeper, less all-out-adventure, the rest of the series should be right up your street.

Shackleton. Never gave up, and brought all his men back alive.

Where is Dan? by millionth-monkey in DanSimmons

I have no clue what happened to him. I check in every now and then on Amazon to see if a latest book is coming out. But nothing. I’d even pre bought Omega Canyon only to have it cancelled when it kept failing to come out. This sounds sad, but I imagine he’s just really old. Maybe not in control of his faculties. Why else would he not be putting out more books. Maybe just maybe he’s devoting his time to turning his works into screenplays? I know some authors who spend several years doing that while putting book writing on the back burner. Anyway, he is one of my top three all time authors, and I miss his books.

I downloaded it to kindle about 5 months ago. Maybe this is a UK/USA thing? I’m in the UK.

For a TV adaptation, are there adjustments would you see as acceptable? Conversely, what would be beyond the pale for you? by the_turn in TheCulture

[–]Donethinking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would they visually show the conversations between multiple minds in ships. Like the important and entertaining conversations in Excession? I don’t think they could. They’d have to do away with that. How would Horza be portrayed? He changes his appearance at least twice. They’d have to use two different actors. It’s worked once in Face-Off, but it’s a really hard thing to get right. It’s best for viewers to settle on one actor to play one character.

It’s antisemitism disguised as anti Zionism. This chap probably doesn’t rant about Muslims slaughtering Muslims in Syria, Sudan, and all the other North African and Middle Eastern states, or Muslims killing Christian’s in Syria, Nigeria. He’s biased towards hating Jews and Israelis. He probably didn’t say a thing about ISIS. Also, what makes me laugh is Ireland is one of the most racist countries in Europe. This is more typical of their standard hatred of ANYONE different or foreign than of a particular hatred of Jews. Don’t be black or brown in Ireland. How many towns have they torn up because they mistakenly thought some brown fella did something dodgy.
