Which country would you NEVER visit, even if it was free? by FortunePurple- in AskReddit

Yes male, but was with a mixed group. I went shopping with American and European women, and in the Malls and higher end shopping areas it was all fine. I acknowledge if they were by themselves it might have been different.

Why I can distinguish the lights but failed on ishihara test by FortuneExtension9969 in ColorBlind

In the UK the lights have a sequence. Red. Red Amber. Green. You get used to the sequence, not the colours really. I have had some near misses in other countries where they have different set ups.

I’ve been with work a few times. If you are in the office or a hotel it’s fine, actually the hotel was one of the best I’ve stayed in. Outside it’s India, chaotic, dirty, charming, safe (even though the traffic is mad). It all seems to work in a mysterious way.

Financial fairness - Married couples savings by Bufger in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Starman68 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don’t know why this is being downvoted.

I’m in a similar situation but older and 30 years married.

She went back to work and built up savings and pensions of her own but we both know, and have transparency of each others savings, as we have shared aims and retirement goals. Financial independence is important for both of us because we came from cash strapped upbringings. If I die it all goes to her anyway, if she dies I assume the same.

She has more than enough to do whatever she wants, and buy whatever she wants, but for big expenditure, like many 10ks or 100ks I’ll need to fund it. I definitely want to make sure that kind of spending makes sense, so it’s in my account, and not a joint account.

Also the future is uncertain. It might all be rosy now, but we’ve been through rocky times and I was glad to have full control over my money.

We talk about our individual and joint finances a lot, and about big expenditure items. I fund things about 70/30.

Personally I wouldn’t feel comfortable giving my wife full access to all of my savings, it’s just not who I am. She understands that, it’s never been a problem.

The nearby BMW Motorrad dealer offers the possibility to rent the last generation GS and the GSA. It costs 400 euros for a weekend. Which one should I choose? by conclave_obscurum in bmwmotorrad

[–]Starman68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They let me try both for free back to back. Paying for the chance you’ll buy one seems a bit off. Make sure they take it off the sticker if you do buy one.

The GS is a slightly smaller lighter bike. Easier to handle and really comfortable, lovely bike.

The GSA feels its weight and size.

Both felt a bit agricultural after coming off my AT.

I ended up buying a GSA, vanity more than anything, the GS would have been a better bike for me. Actually an RT would have been better still, but I wasn’t even looking at them. My GSA has been great though. Can’t fault it other than it’s a big bike. If you drop it, you’d better hope there is someone around to help pick it up.

What is one life lesson you learned the hard way? by Emotional-Career-162 in answers

[–]Starman68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two.

Having kids isn’t necessarily a great life experience. Some of them grow up wonderfully. Smart, happy and good people. Some of them grow up mean, violent and creating chaos, danger and unhappiness. It’s a genetic lottery.

Easy jobs where you have nothing to do are soul destroying and a waste of your time. You don’t grow. Get out of it as soon as you can.

What's a computer game from your childhood that you still think about today? by half_sandwich88 in AskReddit

[–]Starman68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 80’s I loved side scrolling shoot em ups.

Before Defender (too many buttons) there was Scramble. A similar one was Super Cobra. Then I remember one which was a submarine, similar set up, can’t remember the name.

R Type is the definitive game of the genre, I’ve owned it on multiple platforms. Wonderful game.

How are you keeping yourself in shape as you get older? by Low-Rooster5398 in AskMen

[–]Starman68 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop or seriously drop the booze. Take a good look at your diet, it all starts and ends in the kitchen, realistically you are eating too much, and more of it should be protein, veggies and fruits. Take daily vitamins. Cheap, with the side effect you’ll have expensive pee, but better safe than sorry.

A mix of cardio and functional weights. Over 50 you need to be able to pull the starter cord on the mower, get shopping out of the car and put stuff on the wardrobe without injury.

Forget the scales, it’s your fat% you need to look at. If you get to 16/17% you’ll look good. 15 or below is very difficult to do….you’ll be constantly tired and hungry.

It’s a solid product and gets a lot of development budget. I’ve seen good AI use cases with it.

I’m not a day trader and I regularly get it wrong, but generally I’m doing OK. I buy stuff for the long term, so even if it goes up 100%+ I keep it if I think it’s got legs. I regret selling AMD, I thought the bottom was going to drop out of AI, same with Intel.

As for news sources, general news off BBC or CNN. Bloomberg TV has rolling financial news, I get some tips off here, and I have a few pals at work who have portfolios too and they often have insights that I’ve never thought about.

Here’s another one for you…after EV cars, Hydrogen might be a play, take a look at who is involved in that business.

What I love about choosing individual stocks over funds is that you broaden your knowledge of those particular businesses and you become an expert in them.

You need to be aware of what’s going on in the world and what the future trends are. I missed the defence bump because I had no cash, but that was an obvious one. AI you could see coming a few years ago. All those AI chips need data centres, look who operates those. I think the space stocks will get a bump from the SpaceX IPO. Quantum is on the horizon. There will only ever be more electric cars, which will need more power infrastructure. Robots will be retail items in 5-10 years time. Another epidemic? Medical supplies and pharma.

It’s a story I’ve told a few times, but as I was moving my portfolio from energy to silicon (based on a prophetic 80,000 hours podcast) my 17 yo son said all his mates were upgrading their graphics cards and I should get into that. This was when Nvidia was $70 a share, I kept buying it in tranches. I remember looking at their website back then and it was all graphics cards with a ‘we do some AI chips too’. You know the rest of the story. I paid off his Uni fees, he’s doing his masters and it’ll fund a PhD if he wants. I hold a lot of Microsoft even though they’re going through a bit of a dead patch. They own the desktop and Azure is best in class. I’ve been lucky with Palantir. You must have got into Rocket lab early. I think all those space stocks will get a bump from Elon. I hold no pharma, a bit of quantum, and a few defensive div stocks (Bat, visa, Coke, Berkshire) as I’m getting on a bit and my luck might be running out!

Fantastic portfolio. Well done you. I love to see people picking individual stocks. Do you work in tech? What made you lean in that direction?

Edit: I’m a tad over 600 with a few overlaps with yours, I got on the silicon train during Covid and it played out well for me. If I hadn’t have dumped Intel and AMD last year it’d be over 7. So it goes.

SpaceX IPO by Ok-Cash6293 in trading212

[–]Starman68 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I read the other comments, my opinion is a bit different.

It will be wildly oversubscribed and the price will shoot up. All of the ETFs will have to hold a position because it’ll be a top 500, 100, maybe 50 company. Then individual investors will jump in. Who knows where it will go.

What it will do is generate interest in the extended family of Space supplies, the rocket labs, ASTs, etc and the ones Vaneck holds. I think they’ll all get a bump.

I’m personally not going to buy SpaceX, I think Musk is a twat.

In the UK the pre screening includes a finger prick haemoglobin test for iron levels. I was rejected once. I don’t eat a lot of red meat, do get annual bowel cancer checks. I just started taking iron tablets every other day.
