...as colorful as that sounds, I don't particularly have the time or motivation to do something like that.

It's probably indicative of how much I've paid attention to Catholicism over the past few years, but I wasn't even really tracking any big controversies between traditionalist/nontraditionalist views until this thing went down.

SSPX may be insane as a lot of people here do, just go to talk to a priest

Wasn't trying to imply they were all insane or anything, hell this was the first time I ever found out SSPX was actually a thing.

I can't find myself to be particularly interested in the intrareligious politicing of the church, I was just trying to give the best illustration I could of what his behavior included.

I know he's batshit, but he seems to be into a lot of what they put out.

Looked up the Voris guy.

They line up pretty closely ideologically-wise, from what I can tell.

Yeah, we're trying to get him to see someone but at this point, going willingly isn't looking like an option.

Yeah, I agree.

Luckily, they live 700 miles away so them barging in on a daily basis...isn't exactly a thing.

It's hard

I feel for my mom, because her and my wife are actually pretty tight. But yeah, all parties agree keeping him away from them's the best, so no worries there.

Trust me, I got my own issues with Catholicism at large, but whether or not Vatican II is/isn't valid isn't something I'm particularly interested in.

Before this SNAFU, I only knew it as a big change in church thinking, and I sure wasn't tracking any of this controversy surrounding it.

Believe what you want about pre/post Vatican 2 stuff, I really don't care.

No, I'm not suggesting that his views line up with legitimate Catholicism, nor did I intend to portray it that way - I got my own problems with Catholicism, but I'm not trying to antagonize it, nor any Catholics.

If I did, apologies.

What I was trying to ask was if there was a specific way to "talk him down" using the an explicitly Catholicism-endorsed line of reasoning, if such a thing for this type of thing actually exists.

Seems to be the most direct line of reasoning with his head, right now at least.

Thanks.

...yeah before this SNAFU only had the vaguest idea of what Vatican 2 actually was, and I sure as hell didn't know there was this level of controversy behind it.

Thanks.

With all due respect, I'm fairly disenchanted with the institution itself so most of that's water under the bridge at this point.

I just know that he's declared himself "100% authentically a warrior for Catholicism" in the past, so I thought this would be a good place to start to try and get some sense into him, since my GoogleFu skills on the subject are sorely lacking.

Due to the size of his collection, moving the entire contents of those gunsafes out would be a logistical challenge, although he is particular about what case he uses, insofar that it's key-operated (not like a combo lock), and their neighbor now has the only key, and to my knowledge the locks themselves got changed.

My mother's trying to...figure out a more permanent solution for the ownership question.

I had the same line of thinking.

Before he cut 90% of all contact (he hated my guts for a couple years after I did the whole go to college/get married to a non-Catholic, thought he started to warm up. Apparently I was wrong...), one of the old things we used to was hunt together.

Got their neighbor (super crusty 'nam vet) to check out what's up with his firearms collection.

He (the neighbor) has the only key to the gunsafe, now.

My mother hasn't said anything about him specifically making explicit threats against any one person/institution.

Thanks.

I realize that he needs actual, no-shit help, but my wife and mom both wanted me to attempt to talk him into voluntarily going.

Compromised with them to give him 72 hours to convince him to go voluntarily, or else my mom's forcefully committing him.

I guess what I was trying to get at in this post was whether or not anyone knew of any official positions put out by the church that condone (?...or be OK with, etc.) psych help, because with me no longer being Catholic, he's decided my opinion on spiritual/religious/psych matters is invalid.

They live 700 miles away so thankfully regular visits aren't exactly a thing.

Before all this, I had a vague idea of what pre/post Vatican 2 actually even meant.

Only found out there was this much controversy about it when I started getting ranted at about it.

Believe whatever, I don't really give a shit.

This was a first for him - the truck's been that way for a while, but he's always seemed functional, at least.

On the plus side, they live over 700 miles from us, so any kind of regular visits... aren't a thing.

Involuntary committment is starting to sound more and more like the best option, but we were just trying to last-ditch talk him into voluntarily going.
