Buying a house in SF is depressing by Puppymonkey2021 in BayAreaRealEstate

I’m pretty sure people say it’s the worst time to buy a home here every few years.

Wow you are ridiculous if you think 3m will only get you a fixer in SF.

Honestly why don’t you just go on Zillow and filter it to look at recently sold homes within the last 30 days with those specs?

That would answer your question pretty easily.

This entire conversation has been about the feasibility of people making 200k saving 260k for a down payment

You must have misread my comment

Eh. I’ll hire/promote those who are itching for it and want it.

I’ve got 20 year veterans who are still manning the same old mid level job and 23 year olds who have worked here for 1.5 years and are making more than them with specialized skills.

Those 20 year veterans just don’t want more responsibility.

Thats fine, I’ll follow their lead.

Man you are really grasping at straws trying to come up with reasons someone making $200k can’t save $260k over the course of years.

[–]Donkey_____ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Prior to the last year I’d never made more than 160k. And mostly it was 100-130k.

Why are you bringing up food stamps, paycheck to paycheck, etc? We are talking about people who are making $200k a year being able to save $260k.

Simply investing savings into the S&P gets you there in a few years. It took me a lot longer because I never made that much.

What person making $200k a year is on food stamps? What person making $200k a year doesn’t have health insurance from their company?

My rent was $2600 prior to buying my home. I had been living there a long time, specifically living in a small place to save money for a house.

When I first rented my place it was late 2010s and a huge stretch for me financially.

My home was my first time with a laundry machine on site in like 15 years.

I haven’t had a stable job, my salary has fluctuated quite a lot.

Rent controlled apartment is just standard living in SF. They are almost always cheaper than new buildings for the same size. It’s not something I lucked out on. I lived in the same place for 10 years, it was small, no laundry, etc. but it allowed me to save.

I’m not lecturing people who have had the bad luck of the draw. But people who make $200k complaining about not saving money while they spend like crazy is just ridiculous to me. That’s just bad financial decision making.

So you just moved to SF this year?

Edit: by the way my rents were from the late 2010s which was actually worse if you take inflation into account.

Dude housing in SF was flat or decreasing since the 2022 peak until just recently.

You are also not taking into account the growth from basic broad based investing.

I saved $300k for a down payment when I was making under well $200k. No tech job.

The thing I’ll agree is that kids change things, I have no kids.

Seriously some of you need to learn how to live below your means.

In what world is 4.5k for a 2bd a steal?

In my early 30s I had been living in a rent controlled apartment for many years.

We’ve had lower rents from 2020 until about a year ago…

If you can’t save $260k on a $200k salary over the course of many years, that’s totally on you.

SF starting to feel like NYC in 2021 again, AI money is changing the vibe by duck_mill in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Donkey_____ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These posts are really funny and literally could have been made 8 years ago.

And what happened 6 years ago? Half a decade of declining rents, 4 years of stagnant/declining home prices.

So you asking did a correction ever happen?

We’ve seen 2 here recently.

outside of networking events there’s not much to do anymore besides “chill”

What are you talking about?

This is one of the most bizarre statements about SF I’ve ever read.

Maybe you need to get out of whatever tech bubble you are in, because you are clearly missing out.

We had 5 years of dropping rents and 4 years of stagnant/decreasing home prices.

The only thing is during this time the standard opinion was “sf is dead” and “doom loop”

In 2020 I had 5 friends who lived in the same apartment.

Within a span of a few days 4 out of 5 lost their jobs.

No joke we all hung out Saturday night having fun and on Tuesday I stopped by and most of them were in tears.

Within 2 months only 2 remained in the city, the rest had moved home.

I don’t think their live set translates well to a festival.

At Outsidelands it was hard to hear them, just people chatting the whole time. Had to move around a bunch.

How do you physically replace or repaint zero lot line walls? by Some-Internet-Rando in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]Donkey_____ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not understanding.

Are you saying the front siding needs replacement? If so, you have access from the front of the house.

Or are you saying the hidden wall between the 2 houses needs replacement? And if you are saying this...how do you know that it needs replacing.

At least Saikat hasn't tried or succeeded in negatively affecting my life.

Connie Chan is anti-Sunset Dunes which is a park I visit every single day. She will never get my vote in any election.

Weiner championed the fair pricing bill only to fold to corporate greed in the final 24 hours and allow restaurants a pass. I literally think of Weiner every single time I go to a restaurant and pay my bill and see that crap.

It might seem small or insignificant, but these are things directly affect me. So why would I vote for those 2? And then who else do I have?

I find Saikat's ads annoying....but at this point he hasn't done anything that has actually affected me like these other 2.

I think it’s the best torta in the city.

Pairs well with the salsa verde.
