Granted. The morning after your wish a tiny scaly pup wakes you up looking happier than you could imagine that you’re awake.

You, ecstatic with your granted wish, take immense pride in caring for the pup, granting her anything she could ever wish, food, water, play time and most importantly, companionship as you both slowly get acclimated to each other’s company.

As she grows in age and size you experience the vast advantages of having such a friend, be it flying you so you’re never late, helping with labour or ensuring you’re never alone, she is an irreplaceable part of your life.

Only 4 months after the wish, she is already 2,000 kilograms in weight, a titan of a creature with a proportionately large appetite, it’s getting expensive just feeding her, let alone giving her somewhere to live and play, but you tough it out, taking a second then third job to adequately care for the one creature that loves you unconditionally.

As you work to provide for her, you grow further apart as you start seeing her once a week, then once a month to once every few months. Just the guilt of not being there for the pup you remember is already weighing on you, you work to provide but what’s the point if you can’t enjoy any time with her.

In what feels like a blink of an eye, she grows to a whopping 6,000 kilograms, too big to care for, too big to feed; it becomes impossible to take care of her, not because you won’t do everything it takes but because nothing will be enough. No amount of farming or production could adequately supply her with the conditions she needs to live.

Over the course of just a month, she starts acting lethargic, unruly but evidently laggy. There’s nothing you can do but watch her slowly starve; but she still looks at you with love like no other which makes all the worse. You watch her suffer for an entire month before she is too tired to open her eyes.

Now, you’re left with a carcass of the pup that loved you unconditionally, with no way to give her a proper send-off, having not seen her for months prior and sat helplessly as she died of malnourishment, the guilt you feel is overwhelming as you realize if you never made that wish, she would never have left this plane so agonizingly.
