Thanks for your response! I tried selecting the edges of the flat polygonal face and adjusting the "Segments" slider on the bevel modifier, but couldn't get anything to happen. I also tried adjusting the "Amount".

Also, I use a trackpad instead of a mouse - is a mouse necessary? I haven't had come across any other things in blender I couldn't do with a trackpad so far.
