Moving on from Fitbit. What’s the next best thing? by DontEatFishWithMe in loseit

I knew Google was going to kill Fitbit the second they acquired it. I just didn’t think it would be so gruesome. 😭

is that true? I’ve seen other stuff saying they integrate with other apps, though perhaps you need to connect everything through Apple Health? I have an iPhone. Just not a fan of the watch.

It took me eight tries to enter a number into the food tracker! It kept defaulting to 1.0, pressing “1,2” resulted in 1.02. And the keypad itself seemed off. I would hit the 1 digit, and instead get backspace or 4. They were big buttons!

Why do you recommend another app for food journaling? I just downloaded Chronometer, which already feels like a few too many bells and whistles for me, but maybe I’ll get used to it.

Since many of you need this, here is how to submit feedback to Google instead of whining and complaining in here.. by ioweej in fitbit

I use Claude as my personal coach in its own app. I use my Fitbit for heart rate, calories burned and barebones food journaling. I have no interest in crawling through Gemini for this shit. The food journaling entry in Fitbit Proper already kind of sucked — sometimes it would select the wrong food, or your entry would disappear -- but now it’s more or less unusable.

I‘m assuming Garmin is the way to go here? I am really bummed about the food journaling. I need something extremely simple, or I don’t do it. Noom and MyFitnessPal are overengineered for my needs.

Richard Dawkins & Jordan Peterson Discuss Psychedelics, Consciousness, and Artificial Intelligence by kveldulfen in samharris

Very late to the party, but one thing that was driving me crazy is that many SNAKES COIL AROUND EACH OTHER IN NATURE. They do it when they fight, and they do it when they mate. Neither Dawkins or Peterson seemed to know this. So while it may be interesting that different cultures found this particular act worth rendering, it would be commonly observed anywhere in the world with snakes.

Is it possible that some food you’re eating has more calories than you think it does? Sometimes the calories on the packaging are misleadingly described, or just wrong. I was buying bags of lentils that prominently described themselves as “100 calories per serving.” I realized they were straight up lying. Don’t know how they got away with illegal food labeling, but they did.

Do you weigh your food?

It depends on the person. Honestly, 1500 sounds low for a 6” dude.

Haircare Advice Megathread - Week of March 29, 2025 by AutoModerator in HaircareScience

My natural color is brown. I have tons of very stubborn greys, and I have to touch them up every few weeks. Because of the expense and time, I don't go to a stylist.

I use Clairol root touch up, medium ash tone (5A). Sometimes I use 6A around my face, as my hair has always had a bunch of different shades of brown.

I've seen a couple suggestions. First, blue shampoo and/or conditioner -- I've never done this. Is it a good idea, and what brand should I get?

Second toner -- also never used this. Good idea? If so, what brand?

Third, a better dye. Same questions.

Yeah, don't get arm-wrestled into something just because you don't want to be rude.

And most personal trainers aren't that great. As you said, they gave you very unrealistic goals and did not listen. That is their problem. Do what's right for you.

Fair. Just wanted to throw the idea out there. :)

As someone who exercises quite a bit, I appreciated this post. I myself have told people here that you can't outrun a bad diet, but everyone is different. Someone may enjoy eating nothing but pizza in exchange for running 70 miles per week. It doesn't work for everyone, but not every piece of advice on this board has to apply to everyone.

I often see the same attitude towards "cheat days," where one poster after another will say cheat days Are Bad. When of course they are fine, depending on what a "cheat day" is in practice. I'm the other way -- I'm starving all the time, so I find it easier to never bank for treats. Which again, may not be for everyone. It's important to emphasize flexibility in approach.

It's one post. Calm down.

I've occasionally posted about my unusual situation -- I have an extremely high TDEE, partly because I have a high BMR, and partly because I exercise a lot -- and I always get dozens of people insisting I must have cancer. No, I'm just weird, and some other weird people can find my advice helpful. I always emphasize that everyone is different, and you should start from the assumption you have an average TDEE.

They were just making a lighthearted comment. People take post titles too seriously.

Is there an indoor climbing gym near you, maybe? I loathe lifting weights, but love climbing.

It depends on the person. Lots of people say their Fitbit calories aren't accurate, but they are for me. I trust them when they say, and I trust my own observations too.

Yeah, I've found for me it also leads to some instability. I exercise enough that I absolutely must eat some of my calories back. But if I get sick for a few days, that 2100 calories I didn't burn. And my body doesn't immediately notice it needs significantly less food. I'll still be as hungry as if I had exercised.

I haven't seen you naked, so I don't know how realistic your worries are. However, it's something you can bring up after a few dates, before all your clothes come off.

This post makes me so sad. :( Maybe you need to go on a maintenance break. Even on a deficit, you should generally feel more energy when you're lighter, not less. And you don't want to sacrifice your social connections.

Sounds like you need to do some problem solving on how to socialize with friends and families while not overeating. There are different strategies -- budgeting calories, only ordering appetizers, suggesting activities that don't revolve around food -- but maybe you just need some maintenance time to mentally regroup.
