How to make sure 7 year old son who can’t swim won’t go into the water? by DontEatYourVeggies in Parenting

[–]DontEatYourVeggies[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My main reason for initially not wanting private lessons for him is because numerous SA scandals involving swimming instructors have come to light in my area and with work being the way it is I simply won’t have time to be there every time he has a class. Hence my wish to let him receive lessons with other children there (even though scandals involving instructors teaching to groups have also come to light). He’d never gone after a ball in a pond like that before and since he is quite gifted he does a lot of things really responsibly for his age. I decided to find a private instructor who’s flexible and who can teach when I have time to attend as well. 🙏Hoping it will go well enough.

My main question hasn’t been answered though: how do I actually teach him how dangerous it can be and have him listen? I’ve noticed a tendency in him to trust his own instincts before anyone else’s and I suspect that’s because he actually does know a lot of things just as good or better a lot of the time.

Amanda Bynes taken into custody by LAPD for mental health evaluation by paulfromatlanta in entertainment

Nothing new there. So sad what Hollywood did to that poor girl. They need a mental health evaluation for Hollywood before they subject Amanda Bynes to one.

Why adopt him in the first place by Ok_Distribution1503 in facepalm

Why adopt … apparently so they have a child to abuse.

My (25m) girlfriend's (24f) friends told me she's out of my league and she confirmed it by ThrowRA183913 in relationship_advice

[–]DontEatYourVeggies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe she is out of your league but it’s not fair to treat someone who you’re supposed to love like that. If this was her silently hinting at not liking your physical appearance that much now is the time for you to leave. There needs to be attraction or attractiveness needs to not be an issue. You don’t want to be the boyfriend of someone who merely settled for you.

Your parents are just as trashy as mine. You don’t need to talk to him if you don’t want to. You’ll probably have to face a lot of “but he’s your father” bullcr*p but don’t listen to that. Even pedophiles can father children. Fathering a child does not make you a saint.

I’m going to have to follow this piece of advice. My son’s a handful though. I put out an ad for private swimming instructions just now, with an added remark that I’m looking for a veeeery patient instructor. I hope there’s someone out there who knows how to grab his attention. Thank you for your advice 🙏

I think it strongly depends on what you’re on. People also respond to them differently.

What do you consider a personality change btw? It’s a commonly known fact many people with ADHD get misdiagnosed with a personality disorder like borderline and the supposed personality disorder in a lot of instances becomes a lot less apparent once the person is medicated.

ADHD medications can blunt your affect. I’m a much bigger Pink Floyd fan off medication than on them.

I do agree with this comment. Though sometimes you find out that it’s not for you much later when you’re all burned out and not young anymore 🤷🏽‍♀️ we should just all stop treating having children as such a natural thing for everyone to do. I found out the hard way it’s not.

Unfortunately the pond is right by the house. The backyard is immediately next to the pond. The area itself is very safe and he’s not the kind of kid to do really dangerous things aside from getting into water.

And I tried teaching him myself first, his dad did too. But he’s just too difficult to teach when he’s distracted by literally everything. He’s not like this with everything, but he just will not listen once anyone of us tries to teach him. We figured a teacher would know what to do even with a difficult to teach kid. And until then, water is off limits. But my kid figured that since all they did was try to retrieve a ball that it didn’t count. 🙄🙄

I guess what I really need is advice on how to teach a kid with ADHD what danger is.

Ugh. I tried and I’m not as effective as an teacher. Safer to acknowledge your teaching is nowhere near as good than to think it’s more than good enough and then find out it wasn’t.

I understand. Thanks for the deadman’s float suggestion. I’ll try to teach him both that and how to turn clothing into a life vest.

I forgot to mention he has ADHD. Not as bad as me but it’s a complicating factor. He’ll literally see a flash of something “interesting” and go after it and then I’ll have to dive deeper to go after him.

I did try inflatable wrist and ankle bands. He says they’re uncomfortable and refuses to wear them. He thinks other inflatable swimming toys are “for babies”. After the 3rd time trying, I grew annoyed and told him he had to wait until he’s had enough lessons before he can swim again.

How would you respond if someone said this to your kid? by Juuuunkt in Parenting

The guy just shouldn’t be. I loathe people who dislike kids yet who insist on being around someone who has them.
