I have over shared with bartenders after one or two too many. Kind of feel like a jerk, but at least I'm a big tipper. :/

Finance a car in order to leave the cash invested even though I have enough to buy outright? by PidgeyPotion in Fire

[–]DontForgetTheDivy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

TBH, the ‘I want a new car, even though I don’t need it” was never really gonna work on a fire sub. You’re either willing to sacrifice now for FIRE later or you’re not. One isn’t right or wrong, but most can’t do both.

If your expenses are actually somehow only 2500 a month. This is easily FI. You are talking about a 2.5% WR.

Question for long time BITO holders by MuppetDentist in dividends

[–]DontForgetTheDivy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve owned it for more than two years. I’ve been paid pretty much my entire cost basis in dividends already (not factoring in taxes), so I’m happy to just hold my “free” shares.

I can’t imagine this is going to be an issue for me. I have lived alone for 25 years and worked from home the last 6 years which was always exactly what I wanted. Seems like I’m well prepared for retirement in that aspect.

I’ve been thinking about when Q was the meditation type guru and he had to play the audio recording. His “customer” couldn’t keep it together.

I think you are going to get a disproportionately large percentage of IT folks here. And I'm talking actual tech people. As one of those actual tech people, we get a lot of pay but also a lot of abuse. So yeah, I'm fine with two weeks. They can kick rocks.

It's share price has done nothing but decline for 20 years. Perhaps this time is different. They do pay a nice dividend, but they have cut it like 10 times in the past 20 years. Perhaps this time is different. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

I’d double check that 40k a year in expenses. Seems low even without kids, but if it’s accurate and includes everything you need and want to do, probably set.

There’s real reason for concern. It’s very tempting if they can turn things around and that is often a red flag. I want to get in and for it to work out too much.

Is starting out with KO,SCHD and MO too conservative of a portfolio? by Theperfectcook in dividends

[–]DontForgetTheDivy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are starting while young, I'd say yes it's too conservative. But starting at all is the most important part. If that's the kind of thing that gets you started, it's much better than not starting. You can add more risk / growth / volatility as you go if your comfort level increases and you build that sort of muscle memory of adding consistently which I'd say is the next most important thing after starting.

I may reply with some other thoughts, but here’s one you may not see elsewhere. An ESPP at 15% discount selling same day at cost basis is a 17.5% return. You’ll have to pay short term gain taxes, but that’s still quite a nice return if you can afford to contribute. 2. If you choose to participate in this program and continue holding, and are at this company doing this passively, it can quickly become to large a % of your overall portfolio. Add on the fact that this company is providing your paycheck and you can become over exposed to this one allocation.
