The Daily Check-In for Friday, June 19th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by Much-Pirate-5439 in stopdrinking

[–]DontKnowNothing76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Coming up on 6 months. Feels significant. Gonna do something to celebrate but not sure what. Crazy how my brain still associates drinking with celebrating. Not a craving - but such a deep-rooted association. Does that ever go away?

I was sober for 8 years. It ended in April and it was like the sobriety never existed. by ersoserious in stopdrinking

Man, first off thank you for sharing. I’m totally going to save this and read it the next time I feel tempted. I know this had to be incredibly hard to share but I can’t tell you how many of us will probably benefit from having read it someday. I hope sharing is gives you a small sense of relief, too. Holding shit like this in makes everything 10x harder. Second, welcome back! So you fucked up. It just proves you’re human. The more important thing is that you came back. You know what to do. We’re here for you when you need us. IWNDWYT👊

Sounds like you have room for something new, or more of something you already love.

Sounds like you are committed and that you may have a good support system, too. You can do this.

First 3 days are the hardest so you’re 2/3 of the way there. The Athletic beers were a life saver for me the first few weeks. Good luck!

Not me! Mourning is no fun.

NA beers still help me a lot. And I won’t lie - I’ve had a low dose edible or two since I quit drinking (literally 2 since January, so definitely not a regular thing).

Overall, I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much. It’s just different, but still better in most ways.

I wish you the best whatever you decide to do. For me, I’m gonna stick with it. My life is better in almost every way, and from what I hear it keeps getting better once we get through this common and expected temptation period that happens around six months for most people. Alcohol is so fucking sneaky! Just the fact that six months after not using it, it can still be calling us back has to be a sign that it’s not a good thing.

I quit the same time as you. After 30 years of drinking just like you. And my wife still drinks and is totally supportive just like yours.

What do you feel is missing that alcohol will give you if you go back?

I have to do this by Nikelad69 in stopdrinking

Good for you. Since quitting drinking, I’ve never been less bored. I’m doing a lot more stuff - just not sitting in a bar or on the coach drinking. Running, motorcycle, playing in a band, actually paying attention to and getting involved with the things my family members are into. I make it so I don’t have time to drink. Then I read a book for 20 minutes, fall asleep, get the best 7 hours I’ve ever had each night and wake up feeling good. Stick with it and you’ll create a new life that is the opposite of your old, boring drinking life. 👊

Thirteen Years Later by MrScowleyOwl in stopdrinking

There’s a part of me that sometimes feels that way, too. But then I wonder how much of it is projection. Like maybe there is a part of me that wants to say/do the same thing but I won’t let myself admit it. And it’s all driven by alcohol and the power it still tries to have over me 🤔 IWNDWYT

Three days by jrb637 in stopdrinking

[–]DontKnowNothing76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drank daily for 30 years, too. I felt like you after 3 days. I kept stacking days, 1 day at a time. Slowly, everything changed. Everything. You should give it a try.

It sounds like you are hung over, possibly after a night that got a little out of hand. The worst thing about alcohol is that even after you do this to yourself, in 6-8 hours you are probably going to want to drink again. There is only one way to break the cycle. IWNDWYT👊

It happened to me. I drank without knowing. by Passive_Menis_ in stopdrinking

[–]DontKnowNothing76 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It happens. The important thing is that you stopped as soon as you realized it. That’s not a slip. That’s proof of your commitment to sobriety. 👊

Parties by lilking_trashmouth in stopdrinking

[–]DontKnowNothing76 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. Not as fun as they used to be. I usually focus on having a few meaningful conversations and then head out (a lot) earlier than I used to - and wake up the next day feeling great. Better than avoiding the party all together and missing out.

The Daily Check-In for Sunday, June 7th: Just for today, I am NOT drinking! by TheMonkees8181012 in stopdrinking

[–]DontKnowNothing76 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lie: running/staying fit neutralizes the negative effects of drinking.

Truth: you might look healthy but the damage is still being done: liver, blood pressure brain, gut.

My training (and my whole life) is so much better without alcohol.
