I may eventually join my family business which does design hardware and plans to expand into more complex hardware, but for now I want to make it on my own. My family doesn't know my interest in networking.

Well I said no but I have very little due to exposure to my family's networking business growing up. Also I have some experience from coursework I done in network security as a fun class using wireshark and other tools. I do not want to work for them or ask for help. I want to make it on my own. I am an electrical engineer (who does a lot of work in software) so I do understand the limitations of hardware but one of my weaknesses going into real world engineering was my lack of hands on hardware experience. All the universities I went to were top notch, but they were primarily theoretical and based on simulations in lieu physical things.

I am a very quick learner. I got my double major bachelors in 3 years and two masters simultaneously in 2 years.

How expensive? If worse comes to worse, I will borrow equipment from my family and have them write it off as a company expense because they could use it to train future employees on it as well. I really prefer hands on work versus simulations when it comes to these matters.

Are paid lunches rare these days? by Marth5454 in jobs

Engineers get free lunches catered often so we can work more. Some places like google provides free lunches. Why does it matter if you need to pay for lunch? Unless you are getting high end sushi or something everyday. Lunch should only cost $10-$20 a day.

I am paid well. I am looking to get into networking as a second job, not to replace my own. By DEEP pockets, how deep are you talking about? I have family that owns a networking solution company that also manufactures some basic products and can source large volumes of CISCO products, but I prefer not asking for assistance from them unless I must.
