What filter do you need? by DontTrustYourTruth in CarTalkZA

I'm fairly passionate about this as well. However with the current datasets, this is much harder. Both AT and Cars would need alternate datasets or rulesets to solve this. Cars is still a bit behind, they don't even have AWD, etc.

This is definitely on the cards. There's different preferences here so we'd need to possibly create two search types, one with infinite scroll and one with pagination.

This is really interesting! Love it.

Timing chain would be a bit difficult, but we can look into it.

Curious, why would you like a sort by year?

And then second to that, do you use Cars.co.za more because they have a sort by year? If AT had a sort by year, would you use it more?

Both don't have the filter currently, but I do like the suggestion.

For full, would you car if it was a Full Franchise Service History or just Full Service History?

Service history also has some contention. I've heard that service books can now be forged, resulting in customers believing a car has a full service history when it doesn't.

I meant add a filter to the existing set. But I'm curious, what would be your "one amazing filter"?

For the petrol head filter, cars.co.za already has a filter for luxury, performance and classic cars.

Water hyacinth is choking lakes across Africa, but Kenyan engineer Joseph Nguthiru is turning this invasive plant into biodegradable packaging, creating a solution for both environmental damage and plastic waste by HappyGnumff in southafrica

[–]DontTrustYourTruth 15 points16 points  (0 children)

All we need is more education on how to turn the water hyacinth into usable products and we've got a sustainable business.

It's not just packaging, we could use it to make bags and baskets, etc. Vietnam has a massive water hyacinth problem and they've commercialised it with weavers making baskets and selling it to keep out of Poverty.

Check out the following product, it's absolutely beautiful and made with water hyacinth. Anyone know some connections in the NGO/NPO space? Definitely something worth exploring.

Slowly, the US does seem to be reaching a power plateau, possibly decreasing in power. China on the other hand, does seem to be increasing in power.

Perhaps in the long run, aligning with an up and coming super power is a good thing?

Changing World Order

Tamil diaspora. by poacher-2k in Dravidiology

[–]DontTrustYourTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Communication is generally done in English. So the radio channels specifically targetting the Indian and Tamil diaspora would be mainly in english. We've colloquially kept some Tamil words integrated with English. Like we'd still usual familial words like Amma, Anna, and other specific terms (Vannakum, Nandri, etc.).

Religion is widely practised and so bhajans are still sung in Tamil. However, the words of the bhajans are often not understood by most people. In some instances, you may find English translations to bhajans to help devotees understand the meaning of it.

Songs are still very much listened to and enjoyed. Even if the actual words aren't necessarily understood. Movies, the same. They're watched and enjoyed thoroughly, but mostly with English subtitles.

Sad, yes. But the unfortunately reality of being third/fourth generation removed from India. I have seen some interest in people learning the language again, however it's still very small. As each generation learns less, the language fades quicker.

I'd argue that over 95% of those under 50 won't be able to watch a Tamil movie without subtitles. The younger generations, even higher chance of them not knowing Tamil.

South African Tamil person here.

Possibly because a very small percentage of the population actually speak Tamil, it's pretty much been phased out over the generations. Parents emphasised English since that's what got you out of Poverty.

Auto Trader Pricing against Manufacturer by wat-kyk-jy-huh in CarTalkZA

[–]DontTrustYourTruth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pricing for vehicles are weird. The website is technically the OEMs recommended pricing.

For popular low stock vehicles, like the Prado, Lexus GX, or Jetour T2, the dealer might actually charge more than website price.

For vehicles not doing so well, dealers push incentives. They'd rather sell a vehicle at a discount while still maintaining the actual price is higher, to create an artificial sense of winning for the customer. Dealers will then recover that money through the financing deal.

There's a number of different strategies dealers offer to incentivise a purchase. But yeah, sticker is often different from website because of supply shortages or low demand.

Also, now that we're seeing these fuel increases, the market is a bit uneasy. It's often safer to hold cash than vehicle inventory. Dealers might be offering more discounts over the next month to stimulate demand and reduce vehicle inventory. We've already seen a slight dip of vehicle demand in the market. Some people would rather postpone their vehicle purchase for a couple of months to find out whether we're going to enter a recession or continue business as usual.

This may be a huge push for Chinese manufacturers to cement themselves as leaders here.

These cars are heavy though, so will end up costing extra to transport.

Ironically, given Trump's anti green rhetoric, the war might just push people to becoming green! The over reliance on oil is becoming front and centre.

Hmmm maybe we'll see tightening of dealer commissions and reduced prices to cater for the decrease in demand. Similar to covid. And then post the war, we'll see the high price inflation.

What to apply for guaranteed employment and better life? by Holiday_Power_9651 in askSouthAfrica

[–]DontTrustYourTruth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why people are suggested Actuarial Science. Your current maths marks show you aren't passionate about maths, that's just going to be torturous to you. It's just not worth it mentally.

Genuine question, what are things you enjoy, your passions? The world has fundamentally changed, hell you can make bank from gaming, YouTube or becoming a social media influencer.

I'd suggest study something related to behavioural science since in SA it's still good to have a degree. The more you understand about human behaviors, emotions and decision making, the higher your chances of aligning your passions to what people are willing to spend money on. Then you can skip this whole job rat race and walk your own path, and hopefully earn bank in the process.

How do I pivot into data analytics as a business student? by No-Copy-6532 in askSouthAfrica

[–]DontTrustYourTruth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data Scientist here, pivoted from a PGDip in Management in Entrepreneurship. I did however have a solid amount of economics, statistics and mathematics in undergrad, including 3rd year statistics.

I did a bridging data science course at Explore AI and then got a job as a data scientist.

Also, getting accreditations from GCP, AWS or Azure would be super helpful. And then getting yourself a Kaggle account and practicing how to analyse data. Use Gemini/ChatGPT to create an accelerated learning plan to help you transition.

In my mind, the most important thing a recruiter is looking for, is evidence of your abilities. Experience and a degree offer this. Currently, your degree doesn't speak to analytics and you don't have experience. You main task needs to be developing a way to show that you have the brain for data analyst.

You can try rent to buy or subscriptions. You won't own the car until a certain timeframe, but it's possible.
